Enjoy your season of skiing with a base in the small, friendly village of Jamaica, located in the West River Valley. Ten Minutes to Stratton, 20 minutes to Bromley, 30 minutes to Mt. Snow.
This is a traditional white frame house (built 200 years ago), on a plowed side street just off the Main Street. The big red barn is where we store the firewood, park two cars, and has a door leading into the house.
The house has four bedrooms and two and half bathrooms, all with traditional country furnishings.
The house has been our family vacation home for nearly forty years, and is rented out weekly in spring, summer and fall, and each year for the winter ski season. [There are no short-term winter rentals.] The house is well set-up for visitors with a detailed instruction book, guide book, history book etc.
A popular feature is the way in which the living room and the country kitchen provide one big open space. They are distinct separate areas, but are open to one another. Thus the person cooking is also a part of the group sitting in the living room around the fire. (The total distance from the end of the kitchen to the end of the living room is 36'.)
The fire is a wood-burning stove in the living room. However, the house has an efficient oil-fired central heating system.
The TV room provides a separate playroom, and the sofa can be pulled out to provide an extra bed. TV has a DVD built-in.
The two bathrooms are off the kitchen. One has a shower, the other a shower and an old-fashioned claw foot tub. Upstairs is a toilet with hand basin.
A mudroom with a wide entrance off the driveway enables all boots, and ski gear to be left out of the way. The laundry room is off the kitchen, with a washer and tumble dryer.
The house can be entered by the front door, through the dining room, from the deck, by the mudroom, from the barn, or the kitchen - children love the ins and outs of the old house.
House has been lovingly maintained, is very well equipped, and retains its character. (The furnishings reflect the English background and extensive travels of the owners with pottery, paintings, and wall hangings from around the globe, but especially from Britain.)
The house has Wifi installed, and for those with ATT, cell phone reception is excellent as the relay station is nearby.
The Village of Jamaica has a range of small shops and restaurant - and the gathering place for everyone is the Jamaica General Store which sells just about everything including Vermont cheese (and they will hold your newspapers for you -- Wall St. Journal, New York Times, Boston Globe, Brattleboro Reformer.)
The Master Bedroom is at the back of the house, has a queen size bed, ceiling fan and wash basin. It has an ante-room with a desk and hanging space for clothes. The second back bedroom has twin beds. In front is a double room connected to a small room that is ideal for a child.
Nearly 40 years ago, this was intended as the 'retreat' from the academic life in Boston. Over the years it has been our family holiday house, the children have grown up, and now the grandchildren consider it their vacation home. There is something for every generation - soccer and basketball in the garden, sports in the neighborhood (such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, riding, tennis), fresh fruits and vegetables, summer theatre, and flea markets. And the pace of life is different - we all agree, it's the perfect place to unwind.
E. H. DENTON purchased this house in 1976
This is place where you can unwind - and have a group gathering or independent activities. Lots of space for each person to do their own thing. It was been a haven for artists, writers, and musicians.
Children love the house, because from an early age they can be independent. They can explore the area but stay on the sidewalk, with no roads to cross. They can walk up to the library and to the general store - which are just up the road. They can also walk to the State Park which has both long and short hiking trails plus a sandy beach and good swimming in the West River, and scramble down to the brook as wooden steps lead down from the garden.
There have also been numerous games of hide-and-seek in and around the house and barn as there are so many ins and outs.
It is peaceful and quiet, yet only a short walk to shops and post office with Sunday services at the Church on the corner.
It was an extremely hot week, but a very enjoyable stay. Our family enjoyed walking and fishing around Jamaica State Park, and the town is lovely and quaint. Shopping in Manchester and Bennington were great day trips, along with some good eateries there. Family dinner up at the Ball Mountain Lake was beautiful with a view of the mountains that Vemront is known for. Quechee Gorge and Woodstock were also beautiful. We especially enjoyed shopping at local gift shops and stores that provided items from local artists. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
We've stayed here for a number of years in Summer and in Fall. The house is in a great location, beautifully furnished, well equipped and has everything needed for a relaxing vacation. We've stayed with between four to eight people and all stays have been more than comfortable even with more guests. The location is great for anything from Jamaica State Park to Stratton Mountain to shopping in Manchester and sights further afield. We look forward to returning for many more years to come.
Three generations had a wonderful time at this beautifully-located traditional home. Vermont is a great place to explore, and there are many interesting expeditions close by. We enjoy hiking, and the State Park with its trip to the waterfall and many other trails is literally right down the road. The house is very well maintained and the instructions were meticulous.
For the past 3 years, a group of musicians have been staying in this wonderful house over the first couple weeks of August. Each year, the house is welcoming and has everything we could possibly need. The bedrooms are lovely, and the big (and sun-flooded!) dining room was ideal for big group dinners. Our little group has had wonderful summers in this house, and look forward to being there in future years. Massive thanks to the house's owners for all the attentive care they have put into their charming home.
We had a great stay at this house in Jamaica, Vermont. The house is lovely and comfortable, with a wonderful dining room and lots of light. Very close to great walking paths in the state park, as well as many other things to do!
Very warm and welcoming family home. Comfortable accomodations and the house is well equipped. Very nice deck off the living room overlooking the large yard which slopes down to a stream. Beautiful new large dining room. The area has many attractions such as antique auctions, flea markets, country festivals, alpine slide at Bromley Mountain, the best book shop in Vermont in nearby Manchester, indoor pool available at Stratton for a daily fee, outdoor swimming holes at various locations. The West River is a ten minute walk away in a State Park. The village of Jamaica has a wonderful country grocery store and a good coffee shop. The local inn has good dining facilities. Altogether a great place to spend a vacation. Highly recommended.
We have had the pleasure of staying in Jamaica at this wonderful village home two times and fully intend to go back for more visits. The house is perfectly situated off the main village road and just five minutes walk to Jamaica State Park. We thoroughly enjoyed long bike rides throughout the area -- especially riding through Jamaica State Park, over the dam, through the woods and ending at Windham Park in South Londonderry. It is a blast to explore all the villages, great hikes and swimming holes, tennis courts and general stores in the area. The house is very peaceful, comfortable and a perfect mix of old and new. It has charm and character, and very quickly feels like home away from home.

This is a traditional white frame house (built about 200 years ago), on a side street off the Main Street with a big red barn. The garden is about one acre, with brook, basketball hoop, and clubs for putting.
The Village of Jamaica has various small shops: Coffee Shop, Art Gallery, Swiss Restaurant, Village Inn, library and church - and the gathering place is the Jamaica General Store.
The location of the house is ideal for children - they can explore the village without crossing a road. For older ones, they can walk (just down the road) into the State Park with swimming and hiking.
Other Activities nearby: canoeing, golf, tennis, riding (horses and mountain bikes), mountain biking, tennis, country auction, antiques. The Clark Institute in Williamstown and the Music Festival in Marlboro are each about two hours away. The Southern Vermont Arts Center offers galleries to enjoy and courses to take.
