About Melanie Russell

I must have been crazy when I thought I could afford a vacation home! Just fell in love with this area about 12 years ago and, well, one thing led to another. When the house is not rented, I spend lots of time enjoying the quiet and natural beauty of Abalone Cove and the surrounding area. This is my home away from home - I hope you enjoy it just as much.

When I'm not escaping to Abalone Cove, I'm a nonprofit fundraiser in public health who lives in Marin county with my two teens, Kelly (cattle dog), and Frank Sinatra (blue-eyed cat).

Michelle is our neighbor, friend and property manager, who lives down the street and is a true gift to us and our renters. We try to make sure you have everything you need at the house. If I've missed anything, Michelle will take great care of you before and during your stay!

Melanie Russell purchased this house in 2006

Why Melanie Russell chose Sonoma County

If you love to kayak, hike, trail run, eat, drink great wine, hang out with friends, roast marshmallows, relax in the hot tub - all are plentiful here. Some of my favorites are the zins of Dry Creek Valley (45 min drive), the heavenly pastries at Gold Coast Bakery in Duncans Mills (15 min walk), and the fabulous trails in Willow Creek Preserve a quick walk down the street (thanks to the initial protection by LandPaths).

What makes this house unique

At Abalone Cove you'll feel a world away from the hubbub, yet fabulous dining and wine tasting is so close - Cape Fear restaurant is 5 minutes in Duncans Mills, Guerneville is 15 minutes, Korbel is 20 minutes, and Russian River and Dry Creek's world famous wineries are within a 45 minute drive.

The house has both privacy and direct river access - a rare combination on the Russian River! It is cosy, comfortable and the natural setting is absolutely gorgeous.

Guestbook comments from the owner

From our guestbook...

Great house in lovely setting. Lots of classy touches. Enjoyed croquet games - first in many years! Fine place to gather family members from five locales. Sun and redwoods thoroughly enjoyed all.

Loved our week there

  • 5 of 5

Great house, no complaints. Don't know if it is normal because of location or time of year but the river was quite windy and cold.

The house is cozy, best family vacation!!

We loved this property!

  • 5 of 5

It was such a peaceful week at this beautiful, quiet spot. My favorite was being within walking distance to the Island in the Sky Loop trail.

Kitchen was well equipped and everything was clean. Lots of games, rafts, movies provided. Perfect for a quiet, peaceful vacation.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home!

Relaxing on the river

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I had a fantastic weekend at Abalone Cove. Lots of cooking, swimming, and relaxing on the deck. We saw a bald eagle and a pair of osprey and their nest. It was very comfortable for everyone-- the kitchen is well equipped and the kayaks were ready for the river. There was enough space for everyone go off and do their own thing at times, like read, hike, or swim. This was our 2nd time visiting and we hope to do it again. The host was incredibly helpful and responsive over email. I highly recommend it!

Monte Rio Triathlon weekend

  • 4 of 5

My friends and I spent the weekend at Abalone Cove for the Monte Rio triathlon that we were competing in. We were so excited when we got to the house, it was just what we were looking for! The porch and yard are amazing!

We spent 3 nights but only the night before the race did we have 8 people. There was plenty of room for all of us without tripping over each other. Being able to come back to the house after the race to relax in the hot tub, nap and bbq was perfect!

Since we all had our bikes and gear, we drove several cars. We were unaware of parking only a limited number of cars (4) at the house until Melanie text to let us know. There was parking available down the road that worked great for overflow parking. My other suggestion to future guests is that when doing the laundry, the dryer isn't very hot. Plan on starting your laundry the evening before or have enough time to get a head start on it the day you leave.

The internet worked great but all of us with ATT had no phone service.

Owner's Response: We, too, are sorry that Sonoma Co. is very strict about limiting cars to 1 per bedroom. This is the only stay where it's come up - 8 cars for 8 guests! - and we appreciate Allyson being so responsive when we let her know. Glad our renters enjoyed the complimentary washer, dryer and laundry soap - and phone for free local and long distance calls. We try to have all the supplies and amenities that guests need for a comfortable stay, including a well-stocked pantry for great meals with friends.

Perfect spot for a River Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We love this place. This was our third visit and we are already talking about returning next year. The deck has been redone and extended and a nice big picnic table added. This is a great spot to sit and visit with friends over a glass of wine. The attached cabin is perfect for guests. We've had several different couples join us over the years and they've all loved the privacy afforded by the cabin. Overall the perfect spot for a vacation.
