I really could not recommend a stay in this property highly enough.
Riverside Paradise is located 2km outside of the Town of Banagher on the borders of Co Offaly and Co Galway. It is in a beautiful setting on the banks of the River Shannon, overlooking an island with the village of Lusmagh in the back ground. Banagher (Beannchar na Sionna in Irish) is a town in Ireland, located in the midlands on the western edge of County Offaly in the province of Leinster, on the banks of the River Shannon. The name Banagher comes from its Irish name, which translates to English as “the place of the pointed rocks on the Shannon”. Banagher was a town of 3,000 people at the height of its economic growth in the mid-19th century. The current population is just over half of that figure, at about 1,600. Banagher has an important strategic position on the River Shannon, and was long one of the few crossing points between the provinces of Leinster and Connacht. It thus became a natural focus for many great historical buildings, including a 17th-century Martello Tower and a number of important castles around the town, which were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The town used to be the focus of thriving river business and was an important stop on the Dublin to Limerick navigation. It supported a number of large industries, most notably a maltings and distillery, which are now defunct. Tourism has supplanted this to a certain extent with a modern marina providing support for river cruisers and water-sports facilities and the town is an important angling centre, with particular attraction for pike anglers. Banagher is the centre of the ‘callows’ of the Shannon, grassy meadows which flood in winter and provide living space for myriads of waterfowl. A number of notable literary figures have stayed at Banagher, including Anthony Trollope, who used the town as an inspiration for his first novel The Macdermots of Ballycloran and Charlotte Brontë who married a curate who was raised in Banagher. The town is the source of the well-known phrase: “Well, that beats Banagher!” Corrigans “The Corner House” Public House Located in the centre of the town, Corrigan’s is a traditional Irish family-run pub. Around the corner Corrigan’s Off Licence & Wine Merchants stocks leading brands of wines and spirits. Flynns Bar & Lounge A family-run pub, Flynn’s was first established in 1914. Now serving food and drink Flynn’s also has live music at weekends. Local Attractions Clonmacnoise An early Christian site founded by St. Ciarán in the mid-6th century includes the ruins of a cathedral, seven churches (10th-13th century), two round towers, three high crosses and the largest collection of Early Christian graveslabs in Western Europe. Clonfert Founded by St. Brendan the Navigator in 577AD Clonfert soon became a famous school of sanctity and learning. Meelick Meelick has the oldest Irish Roman Catholic church with continuous use since 1414 AD. Originally founded as a Franciscan abbey, the church and sacristy are still in use today. Birr Castle Home to Lord and Lady Rosse and their family, Birr Castle is also home to Ireland’s Historic Science Centre, The Great Telescope and demesne. Cloghan Castle Cloghan Castle is located between Gort and Loughrea, just outside the village of Kilchreest in Co. Galway. Slieve Bloom Mountains The Slieve Bloom mountains is made up of forests, blanket bogs that are unique to Ireland, interspersed with hidden valleys of great character, and interest to the nature lovers. Birr Golf Club 18 hole golf course, Par 70. Carved out of natural woodland and eskers Birr Golf Club provides a strong challenge for even the most accomplished golfers. Esker Hills Golf Club A Christy O’Connor Jnr. designed course, Esker Hills Golf Club is regarded as one of Ireland’s leading inland golf courses.
