About Mary Ann Hale

We designed and built this beautiful home in 2007. We are retired from teaching and 30 years of designing and building custom homes.

Mary Ann Hale purchased this house in 2007

Why Mary Ann Hale chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Beautiful and serene location overlooking Blue Hill Bay and adjacent to nature conservancy with about 1/2 mile of wonderful ocean front to explore. Take out our canoe and explore the nearby shore and watch for wildlife--seals, dolphins, osprey, bald eagles. If you are looking for a peaceful stress free getaway, this is the place for you.

What makes this house unique

Combine the house and cottage rental for a great family reunion--sleeps 16 when combined.

Uniquely peaceful and beautiful environment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a really terrific time: the house was gorgeous and well-equipped, and the grounds, flowers, beach, trees were all bonuses.

Thank you from all of us. We hope to return someday in the future.

Heaven on Earth in Maine

  • 5 of 5

The setting alone is calm, peaceful, and stunning for those of us that love nature. What I appreciated was all the love and care I noted in all the details of the home itself. Every room reflected Mary Ann's attention to detail and thoughtfulness for the comfort of her guests- from the library in most rooms to the art reflecting Mary Ann's own world travels. I could not want for any kitchen gadget or tool and found many I don't own at home! All in all a true vacation that lacked for nothing. I can't wait to go back....

Beautiful home with fantastic view of the water.

  • 5 of 5

The Cove house is large, clean and in a perfect location with a beautiful view of the water. The house is updated, beds comfortable, kitchen well equipped and feels like home. I would only recommend slightly more comfortable seating in the tv room, but we enjoyed the couches in the sitting room. The setting is quiet and private yet minutes to Southwest Harbor. We have already recommended this place to our friends who are planning a vacation to Maine. Only thing you should beware of are the mosquitos. They can be fierce depending on temperatures and wind!

Great for extended family

  • 5 of 5

Rented both houses for our family of 14. Both houses were in pristine condition. Beds were extremely comfortable (everyone commented on sleeping very well). Kitchen had everything you could possibly need for cooking (minus any spices you might use). Layout of downstairs of the main house facilitated cooking family meals, eating together, and playing games with all the little ones. Owners were very accessible and helpful. Most bedrooms had ceiling fans and there were extra fans in closets. Easy to get to beach by small path or road next to the house. Master suite was excellent and the rest of the family enjoyed their rooms as well. Patio space is limited, but yards were nice. (Bring bug spray for mosquitos.) Neighbors on the beach were noisy a night or two. Close to Acadia and Bar Harbor...Plenty to do! Great spot to stay on the "quiet side" of the island. We would recommend it!

PERFECT for a large gathering

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful, well appointed and PERFECT for the large gathering we had. The view from every bedroom was wonderful and the privacy in each bedroom was fantastic. It was easy to "split up" multiple families so each had a private area of the house to retreat to. The living area was very nice for gathering for meals in groups and generally providing an area where you could mingle, talk, cook and enjoy company and conversation.

We had the pleasure of having both Cove House and Cove Cottage, so the grounds were ours for the week. Even outside, there were plenty of areas to sit and read, have private conversations or gather as a group for a glass of wine at the end of the day. Coffee in the morning with the view was spectacular. The morning and evening walks on the beach after very busy crowded parks was also a welcome relief. The canoe was put to good use exploring a quiet restful paddling experience. We brought a kayak and rowboat, so launching was easy and there were plenty of other places for avid paddlers to explore nearby. Seal Cove was apparently a favorite!

Traveling to Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain was an easy drive. There were plenty of restaurants along the way for breakfast (shout out to Grumpy's for the best homemade corned beef and accommodating a group of 12) or lunch and Southwest Harbor provided a wonderful stop for a light afternoon of shopping.

I would highly recommend this location for those that want accessibility to the area attractions, but want a quiet, peaceful, well appointed, and lovely place to return to rest and get a good night's sleep.

Glorious Mt. Desert

  • 5 of 5

The Cove House is a perfect location. Well equipped, beautiful inside and out, very quiet with a wonderful view of the water. Perfect for the four of us. We felt right at home. We are professional landscape painters and we could not have asked for a better place to be! Everything was exactly as we expected from the listing. Very close to Bernard on Bass Harbor which is one of my favorite places to paint and to eat at Thurston's! We are looking forward to returning again.

Another awesome stay at "Cove House". The house remains a tremendous oasis from our busy lives. Great views from every room. Mitchell Cove is a brief walk down the path adjacent to the house with hours of exploring. You could sit for hours on any of the decks enjoying the sun, a book and the views. Much to do within a short drive.

Great hiking biking and swimming in Acadia is less than a 15 min drive from the house. Access to the entire park on MDI is within a 30 min drive. Being on the "quiet side" is such a plus as you get to rest and relax without the hustle and bustle but still have easy access to everything. Southwest Harbor is picturesque. Stop by the Quietside cafe for ice cream or the Common Good for popovers and coffee in the morning. Little Notch bakery has the best baked goods (blueberry pie!!). Maine-ly Delights in Bass Harbor is the ONLY place to go for lobster, but BYOB!

Can't say enough great things about this house and its location. The owners a delight. Available if you need them but not intrusive. This is the place to come if you want to get away and enjoy everything that Maine and MDI have to offer.
