Sunlight Cottage Getaway.

Located between the desirable vacation and shopping districts of Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs sits the Sunlight Cottage at the base of Pikes Peak Mountain. The Sunlight Cottage is surrounded by Red Rock Canyon and Graden of the Gods (Walk to Garden of the Gods) with breathtaking mountain views that you can enjoy from your private front porch and the Hotel San Ayre’s street-side Xeriscape Garden. Full of character and ripe with history, this is what Colorado is all about!

Centrally located to all of the area’s majestic attractions, the Sunlight Cottage is located in a historic home that received a complete renovation in 2011. The Sunlight Cottage is part of the Hotel San Ayre, a popular boutique hotel that appeals to many a savvy traveler with its whimsical style, first class service, and exceptional value. You’ll experience the best of both worlds, as you enjoy the privacy of your vacation rental at a hotel that can offer you service, should you need it.

The Sunlight is approximately 1000sq feet of luxurious comfort; a cozy retreat that features modern yet timeless cottage décor. The difference is in the details of this rental. Experience history as you enjoy the architectural appointments of a bygone era. Originally constructed in the 1893, the Sunlight is adorned with wooden blinds throughout, gorgeous historic hand-tooled window and door trim, 8-inch wood baseboards, and ¾ restored hardwood floors with honey-walnut stain. And don’t forget about the French Doors that add to the charm of this Historic Cottage!

After a long day of sightseeing you’ll be able to snuggle up in one of two bedrooms that feature an Iron King Bed in the Master and an Iron Scroll-Design Queen Bed in the 2nd Bedroom as well as luxurious bed linens. Or perhaps you would first like to soak in a relaxing bath in your private bathroom that features both a shower and original cast iron tub?

You won’t feel cramped in this rental, which also offers a plush, yet modern granite-colored full-size sleeper sofa in the living room to accommodate the whole family (up to 4 adults and 2 children).

Additional amenities include a large and open eat-in kitchen loaded with all the tools you will need to create memorable family feasts. The kitchen features beautiful tile work on the floor and countertops with a decorative tumbled stone backsplash. Have dinner at the attractive black wooden gathering table that will sit your whole family with six solid wood chairs. After enjoying a delicious dinner, your family can adjourn to your private front porch that features views of Red Rock Canyon and to the West, Pikes Peak. How better to enjoy Colorado than to relax on your porch or in the garden and watch the sun set behind the mountain? We are also less than 1 Mile from the Garden of the Gods.

Feeling more like a BBQ? Walk through the back door of your house and you will find that you are surrounded by the gardens of the hotel. Imagine-just out your back door you can enjoy the use of a Charcoal BBQ grill and Fire pit.

The Hotel’s gardens are something you really will enjoy, as they surround the Cottage. Have a picnic in the front, or simply soak in the mountain atmosphere in this hidden garden that features a Xeriscape design with native Colorado vegetation.

Other suite features include Private Entrances and Off-Street Parking, Black Wooden Armoire with Cable Television and DVD, WIFI (Wireless Internet), Clock Radios, Coffee maker, Iron, Hairdryer, Spa-Quality Bath Amenities.

Great location with many adventures close by and quaint historic house!

  • 4 of 5

This is an excellent location to stay on the outskirts of Colorado Springs and close to everything we wanted to check out! Mantiou Springs is a neat area that has great food, shops with various attractions close by including Cave of the Winds, Garden of the gods, Cliff Dwelling, train ride up to Pikes Peak and other mountain adventures not far away. Mike was awesome, he was there to greet us and get us settled in with recommendations and a relationship with many of the local businesses! We will definitely book again, to check out more things we did not have time to get to, and I have already told a few friends and family members. The only reason a gave it 4 stars is that the noise from the road was a little disruptive (road work was being done) as the house sits close to the main road and also the street lights at night came through the window so perhaps better curtains to black it out would be a beneficial. A big bonus was the community house that is two doors down that has a pool table and was another place to congregate, cook, and relax while I should mention there is an outside grill, hot tub and nice common area for taking in the mountain air and beautiful skies as well.

Cute Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We took a "girl's trip" to Colorado Springs and booked the cottage for myself, my friend and her 15 year old daughter. I can not rave enough about our stay. The cottage was the perfect size for all of us and just adorable. The owner and staff were excellent about recommendations of things to do in the area. The location was perfect, very central to all that Colorado and Manitou Springs has to offer. You also can't beat the price. Would most definitely recommend staying here and I know I will be booking here for my next trip to Colorado Springs.

Not what we were expecting/hoping

  • 2 of 5

The pictures and description made the place seem ideal for our trip to Colorado Springs - we made arrangements for the rental through vrbo.com, and the owners were very helpful and communicative. My husband got there on Monday and my two daughters (8 months and 2 years) and I met up with him on Wednesday - after a one week stay, we were not satisfied with our accommodations.

The cottage is over a century old, and is bound to have some "quirks". - it does. From what appears to be a fair amount of foundation settling, every room was on a slightly different level, in some places exaggerated by newer flooring / remodeling. Where they were left intact, the original hardwood floors are beautifully refinished, just not very square. For adults, not a big deal, but it's a definite trip hazard for toddlers or elderly. Other of the refinishing / remodeling work was done in a haphazard manner - sections of one flooring type (dark linoluem / tiling in the rear entry / laundry room) patched into the lighter ceramic tiling of the kitchen / dining room at the doorway, chipping / peeling up at the edges, and not secured properly (some flex evident when walking over it) also caught our attention in a negative way. The bathroom had been remodeled, but the entry doorway was less than 6 feet tall. The vintage heater grates were not securely fastened to the floor - generally a cause for concern with toddlers, but moreso due to other issues.

The biggest problem was the "critters" living under the house and in the walls. We guessed it was raccoons but who knows. It was bigger than rats and mice. You could tell by the sounds they were making. My husband noticed this the first night. He could hear them scratching and crawling up the walls all night long. He went to the front desk the next day and told them about it. They were very apologetic and said they would take care of it. He was clear that he understood that animals can make their way into older homes, but that it needed to be resolved before the children and I arrived the next day. Needless to say, the issue was never dealt with and it was very unsettling that we had to pay to live with "critters". My children were frightened and so was I.

Other little things: The fridge was not cleaned, there was a ton of dust on the blinds/under beds, NO WASHER/DRYER in unit, which was in the description. If you have children, I highly recommend you do not stay here. The best thing was the location was great.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately at the time of this stay we had a raccoon that was making his way into the sealed basement and was exiting by some means in the early morning hours. We believe it had to do with the substantial wildlife impact of the 2012 Waldo Canyon Fire that occurred less then 2 miles from out location. In an effort to resolve the issue we contact the Department of Natural Resource for Colorado. Since the wildlife issue had become such a problem in the districts surrounding the fire they quoted us 4-6 weeks to obtain a humane trap for the raccoon. We communicated this to the guests and asked if there was anything we could do in the meantime to off set the issue. In the mean time we sealed up an old chimney stack that appeared to be the only entrance available for the coon. It took us several weeks to final encourage the pesky guy to move on. Just an unfortunate set of circumstances. We apologize for the issue and look forward to no "coons" in the future for our guests.

A great stay in Colorado Springs

  • 5 of 5

Many Thanks to Mike for our wonderful stay at the cottage at the Hotel Ayre in November. My picky husband was more than satisfied. The description is very accurate. It was clean, spacious, and the beds were great. The location was perfect for our needs. It is close to everything! We loved coming back there at the end of our busy days. We would definately come back if ever in Co Springs again.

Great property and location!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed on property (though not in this exact house) and had a wonderful experience. The property is centrally located to all the main sites. Garden of the Gods is so close that my husband ran there are part of his morning run! An added benefit was the Safeway right down the street from the property. Both Manitou Springs and Old Colorado Springs City are charming and have wonderful dining choices.

The house we stayed in (the loft house) was very newly renovated, well equipped and had a ton of space.

The property owners were super nice and helpful. I highly recommend anyone visiting the area to stay at this property.
