Arnie grew up in Texas and later moved to Norway where he has been a cook for many years. He took his education in Austin, Tx. He has worked in different restaurants with different foods and has in addition to his great BBQ skills, also a long experience with other cuisines. Ellen is a gestaltterapist and has been working with this for many years. She grew up in Stavanger, Norway. She has for many years looked for a place with a comfortable climate. The combination of beautiful nature, growing vegetables and living in a slower pace has been the motivation.
Ellen and Arnie Sanchez purchased this cottage in 2014
We have been travelling for a few years looking for a property in France. Coming to Dordogne and search here, made us really fall in love with this area. The landscape, the history, and the climate suites us very well.
The property is located overlooking the hillsides of Sarlat and with the information of the ancient history - we also were intrigued by this.
For us it was the immediate feeling of peace and tranquility when came to view the property. The location on the hilltop overlooking the valleys was beautiful. The history of the place, and the historic features also contributed to our interest. Coming into the kitchen and looking through the open door to the sunny terrace.was the moment it just felt right. We both knew that this is our place. We could see how this could be our future home and how welcoming in also would feel to family and guests. The size of property, and the spacious feeling we enjoyed as well.
Le Chai is a cosy cottage in its own private corner of Arnie and Ellen's property. Amenities were excellent and the locations extremely convenient to the Sarlat and other highlights of the Dordogne. The recently opened Terrace restaurant on the property was a gem with Arnie demonstrating fine skill in the kitchen taking great local produce and adding his own unique twist. A tranquil place to dine outdoors on a warm evening.
Our stay at le Benechie and le Chai was just perfect. There were 9 of us, between the two gites we had more than enough space yet we were together. You wake up to birdsong but all the must see sights in the Dordogne are close by. Arnie also cooked us a wonderful dinner. He and Ellen were charming, natural hosts. Highly recommended.
We had a fantastic two week stay in the larger gite with our inlaws and two teenage daughters. The gite is in an excellent location if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of Sarlat but still only 5mins by car.
The layout of the gite gave us all some privacy, the kitchen was well equipped with crockery and pots and pans, probably the best we have stayed in so far.
The owners were very helpful and I would recommend eating at their La Terrace restaurant at their chateaux, especially recommend the Texan BBQ and Ellen's homemade Norweigan desserts.
The gite is in a peaceful rural area but still within 5mins drive of a bakers and three very big supermarkets. But also ideally located to explore some small villages in the Dordogne, whilst the larger towns perhaps an hours drive away. We found and were recommended some lovely restaurants to eat in which were away from Sarlat , we liked Sarlat but we found alot of the restaurants to only serve a limited menu typical of that area.
The kayak trip down the Dordogne was beautiful.
The pool and gardens were very peaceful and well maintained and most of the time we had the pool to ourselves...in the middle of August, all in all a very relaxing holiday.
I would recommend this gite to explore the area.
Our stay at Chateau la Benechie was just perfect - a very pretty gite so well equipped in beautiful surroundings. The pool was excellent and our hosts most charming and helpful - what more can you ask for. It was a joy to return to Le Chai after a day out - it felt like home!
Great stay in Sarlat, perfect for day trips. Wonderfully restored house with very nice rooms but small bath. Very nice owners and beautifull surroundings. So quiet and private that you can enjoy a sky full of stars!
A Nice And cosy house And a beautiful swimmingpool. The location is excellent. We enjoyed the country Side And is still very close to the city sarlat. The house is very well decorated And has all equipment needed to make our holiday comfortable. We really recommend this accomodation!
The village of Sarlat has great markets on the weekends all year round including their Christmas markets in December. Foie gras, good wine and small great restaurants and cafes are at the center of Sarlat.
There are many beautiful villages to be seen around the area including Castelnaud- la -Chapelle, Domme, La Roque- Gageac, Beynac -et-Cazenac. These are all on the listing of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. A drive along the back roads of this area is a very nice experience.
Visiting Beynac and other medieval castles is where one can get guided tours. Renting a canoe along the Dordogne river on a hot summer is highly recommended or taking a guided tour in a river boat down the river is also very popular. Hot air balloon rides along the river and surroundings is also very popular too.
The romantic garden of Marqueyssac and it's scenic walk is also a great experience. The area is great for biking as well.
