About Ellen and Arnie Sanchez

Arnie grew up in Texas and later moved to Norway where he has been a cook for many years. He took his education in Austin, Tx. He has worked in different restaurants with different foods and has in addition to his great BBQ skills, also a long experience with other cuisines. Ellen is a gestaltterapist and has been working with this for many years. She grew up in Stavanger, Norway. She has for many years looked for a place with a comfortable climate. The combination of beautiful nature, growing vegetables and living in a slower pace has been the motivation.

Ellen and Arnie Sanchez purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Ellen and Arnie Sanchez chose Saint-André-d'Allas

We have been travelling for a few years looking for a property in France. Coming to Dordogne and search here, made us really fall in love with this area. The landscape, the history, and the climate suites us very well.

The property is located overlooking the hillsides of Sarlat and with the information of the ancient history - we also were intrigued by this.

What makes this cottage unique

For us it was the immediate feeling of peace and tranquility when came to view the property. The location on the hilltop overlooking the valleys was beautiful. The history of the place, and the historic features also contributed to our interest. Coming into the kitchen and looking through the open door to the sunny terrace.was the moment it just felt right. We both knew that this is our place. We could see how this could be our future home and how welcoming in also would feel to family and guests. The size of property, and the spacious feeling we enjoyed as well.

Stunning, Beautiful place owned and run by charming and friendly hosts Ellen and Arnie

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our two daughters (aged 8 & 9) stayed in Le Chai (the smaller of the two Gites) for a week from 3rd August 2017.

Le Chai is perfect for a family of four or a romantic getaway for a couple and is fully equipped.

We loved every second of our stay and can't recommend highly enough the food and service on Ellen & Arnie's 'Terrace' Restaurant with the amazing view across the valley. Arnies' food is superb. Better then any restaurant we tried in Sarlat, by far, and we ate out most nights. Wish we had eaten more of Arnie's food on the Terrace . Breakfast is also excellent and so convenient.

The pool area is perfect and our girls loved using it and the grounds of the Chateau are extensive and make for a very peaceful and tranquil setting.

We will be back and want to thank you both for making our week so enjoyable (despite a few wet weather days !)

Best wishes

Tim, Ailsa, Autumn and Bonnie (Somerset, England)

Wonderful stay and we hope to return

  • 5 of 5

The property has a wonderful setting surrounded by greenery, beautiful trees and very quiet and peaceful. Arnie and Ellen were great hosts, accommodating our very late arrival and the cottage was very comfortable and had everything you needed for the stay. On the last day of our 4 night stay, the weather was warm enough to enjoy a swim in the gorgeous pool. We have stayed at many properties over the last 15 years and this is one we would definitely enjoy visiting again. I researched many properties before deciding on this one and it was the perfect choice.

A hidden gem in the countryside outside Sarlat

  • 4 of 5

We’ve visited Sarlat and the surrounding areas many times during the last 20 years, and each time we’ve stayed in a different Bed & Breakfast or Gite. None of our prior rental experiences even come close to our stay at La Benechie. Everything was superb……The setting, the peaceful environment, the wonderful bed, the excellent linens, the fully equipped kitchen (including super sharp knives which are usually non-existent in a rental property), the large patio with table and chairs. Although the pool was not yet open during ours stay, we did soak up the last hours of afternoon sun while lounging on couches on the poolside covered patio. Total decadence after long days out and about!

Ellen and Arnie are fabulous hosts, and are adept at handling the smallest detail, while giving their guests a sense of complete privacy. We celebrated my husband’s birthday one morning with a delicious breakfast prepared by Arnie, that was served in our gite on a beautifully set table prepared by Ellen.

We really enjoyed our stay, and plan to return to La Benechie once more this year.

Ann Arbor

  • 5 of 5

Ellen and Arnie have a beautiful piece of property just a few minutes drive from Sarlat. They have done an amazing job with renovations on the two vacation rental homes located there. We stayed in the smaller of the two and found it to be very spacious and comfortable. We loved the outdoor deck and enjoyed sitting by the pool. The location of the house was very convenient for exploring the Dordogne area. Ellen and Arnie were most thoughtful and welcoming hosts.

A magical countryside retreat yet close to all the amenities of Sarlat and the Dordogne at your door

  • 5 of 5

Le Chai is a cosy cottage in its own private corner of Arnie and Ellen's property. Amenities were excellent and the locations extremely convenient to the Sarlat and other highlights of the Dordogne. The recently opened Terrace restaurant on the property was a gem with Arnie demonstrating fine skill in the kitchen taking great local produce and adding his own unique twist. A tranquil place to dine outdoors on a warm evening.

Car: recommended

The village of Sarlat has great markets on the weekends all year round including their Christmas markets in December. Foie gras, good wine and small great restaurants and cafes are at the center of Sarlat.

There are many beautiful villages to be seen around the area including Castelnaud- la -Chapelle, Domme, La Roque- Gageac, Beynac -et-Cazenac. These are all on the listing of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. A drive along the back roads of this area is a very nice experience.

Visiting Beynac and other medieval castles is where one can get guided tours. Renting a canoe along the Dordogne river on a hot summer is highly recommended or taking a guided tour in a river boat down the river is also very popular. Hot air balloon rides along the river and surroundings is also very popular too.

The romantic garden of Marqueyssac and it's scenic walk is also a great experience. The area is great for biking as well.
