REVIEWS: Environmentally Friendly: “I have the privilege of experiencing a working sea-turtle camp firsthand because I am staying at Playa Las Tortugas, a charming, ecologically minded property on an otherwise uninhabited stretch of pristine beach. Next to a tidal estuary lined with mangroves—where I spend a glorious afternoon in a canoe, spotting roseate spoonbills and great blue herons, among other bird species—this property demonstrates the value of conscientious development.” Alaska Airlines Magazine

“Each day, I would ride a boogie board in the perfect surf, kayak the pristine estuary that borders the property, do a little birding or horseback riding, and tour by car and foot the scenic Sierra mountains. Then, about 9 p.m. each of the three nights I was there, I’d walk a few hundred yards from my villa to the research station. There, I worked alongside trained staff, spotting nesting turtles, then digging up the eggs for incubation......” The Washington Post March 5, 2006
We had a WONDERFUL time! It is, hands down, the most relaxing vacation we
have ever taken. Everything was exactly as described and better. Elvira and
the ladies out did themselves every day with the food. We had more than we
could have ever dreamed of eating. The house was spotlessly clean and so
comfortable to stay in. There is so much room in there, and the wrap around
porch was the best. Everyone loved being able to wake up in the morning
and look out at the ocean and listen to the waves.
Andres was so helpful. He helped the boys peel a coconut and drink the milk!
He takes such pride in his job, it shows in the condition of the grounds. The
flowers were beautiful and add such a nice touch.
Great house, great beach, great staff. It was a Five Star Holiday. Thank you
so much, I am telling everyone I know about it!

We just returned from our fourth visit to Villa del Mar. We love this house and this beach. Highlights this year were venturing across the estuary to Platanitos, boogie boarding with our kids - who each year are more adventurous, releasing just-hatched baby turtles, celebrating Valentine's Day on the palapa, playing in the low tide at the estuary, and (almost) daily margaritas. As always, we loved Aurora's delicious breakfasts. The house is a perfect split for two families, with each group having a side with privacy. Thank you again!
We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Del Mar. The house was large enough for 5 adults and two children and very comfortable. It is beautifully decorated with Mexican art and sculptures. We especially enjoyed sitting outside in the comfortable deck chairs with the spectacular ocean view.
The children loved playing in the ocean waves and in the sand. Releasing the baby turtles which had hatched while we were there was a special treat for us all. We enjoyed long walks on the almost deserted beach while looking for whales which were breaching out in the ocean. One day we rented horses for a fun two hour ride on the beach.
We had delicious meals prepared for us part of the time by our housekeeper. The kayak ride in the estuary is peaceful and a chance to see many birds. Also, we crossed in kayaks to walk into the little fishing village of Platinitos to eat at a very good beach restaurant.
The drive from Puerto Vallarta is about two hours and includes a 20 minute drive down a gravel road. It is a pretty drive through jungle and farm fields, but coming at night a little difficult to find the first time. When we arrived at La Playa de Las Tortugas, what a wonderful surprise. It was a great vacation with perfect temperatures of air and water and we would like to return.
We have recently returned from a two week stay at Villa Del Mar in Playa Las Tortugas. Our group consisted of two families, with two children each, ages 7, 4, 3 and 18 months. I had read a travel review of this property several years ago, and had kept it saved to my ‘favorites’ ever since, in hopes that we would one day get there, and thankfully we were finally able to make it happen.
I have just finished writing a very thorough review of everything we loved about this house and this area, but didn't realize I was limited in characters on this site, so if you are interested in the whole review, please check out Playa Las Tortugas on Tripadvisor.
In summary, this is without a doubt the most beautiful, peaceful, safe, family-friendly destination we have ever travelled to. All I think about these days is how and when we are going to be able to return. Before we arrived, I was a bit worried about what we were going to do with our time, and how the kids were going to manage, but all my concerns were totally invalid. Our family has never enjoyed such a beautiful vacation, and one another's company on holidays, as much as we did here!
This house is perfectly laid out for a large family, and we had a TON of space. With the enormous patios, the sprawling yard and the private palapa, we had endless options of where to spend our time. in terms of food, I cannot stress enough how amazing the meal service was, and the staff in general were so impressive. I'd get up each morning, put on a pot of coffee, walk on the beach, play with the kids and be back for 9:00, just in time for an amazing breakfast served outside, and enjoyed with a spectacular ocean view. Dinners were equally amazing, and made for such a stress free experience.
This house has everything you could possibly need and then some. The owners are lovely, helpful and gracious, and have set up an amazing vacation home in PLT. We spent our days playing in the pool, splashing in the ocean, or traveling to neighboring villages and having awesome adventures. The beach is spectacular and the gardens surrounding this property are exquisite.
Basically, picture the most beautiful, natural tropical setting you can imagine, and combine it with all the luxuries that make life a little easier, and that's what you'll find at PLT. Without hesitation, without reservation, all I can say is: you MUST experience this place at least once in your lifetime!! We'll be back!!!
Being in the hospitality industry affords me a keen eye for detail and quality. "Villa Del Mar" is hands down the best value for a stay in Mexico. There are several contributing factors that validate this statement as follows:
THE SET UP: The "Villa" is literally 60 yards to the high tide line on the beach with nothing but some lazy coconut trees in between. The surrounding property is meticulously kept grounds, backing to an estuary that one might find in national geographic. Needless to say privacy is a given.
ACTIVITIES: With a gorgeous swimming pool that ties the community together and a private open relaxation deck with a grass roof, hammocks and lounge chairs, "tropical therapy" is in session! If you want to be active you have several options! Estuary tour on a kayak, discover waterfalls, surf (directly in front of the "Villia" alone), SUP, scuba, snorkel, explore towns and authentic Mexican culture or just take in the incredible natural setting. Did I mention the "Villa" sits on a turtle preserve.
QUALITY: It's clear the owners have put thought into the property with tasteful decorative contributions and the highest level of maintenance. Housekeepers come daily providing more time for leisure and authenticating the resort feel.
All and all, this property is perfect for groups and family's. I highly recommend a stay at "Villa Del Mar" to get the most out your precious vacation time.
This year is the second year we've rented this Villa, and it won't be the last! We had a spectacular time last year, and this year was even better. We rent with another family (we are both families of four) and the layout works great for us. This is a perfect place for relaxation and lots of beach time on a beautiful beach. We also hired the property's cooks and were very pleased...wonderful Mexican breakfasts and generous delicious dinners.
We just got back from 9 days at Villa del Mar in Playa Tortuga. The layout of the house is perfect for two families, although we were just there with our family of four and had lots of space to spare. The palapa is great for afternoon naps when the sun is high and the winds pick up a bit. The mornings were perfect at the beach every day. The pool was great in the late afternoon, or anytime really for the little ones. Gabriel and Aurora were very attentive, helping us with any request we might have, including finding popsicles for the kids. The beach is just right outside the house. The most amazing way to start the day is with a morning stroll to the beach, coffee in hand, a dip in the ocean, to come back to a beautiful breakfast all laid out on the outdoor dining table. A truly perfect family vacation!
Villa Del Mar is located on the beautiful Nayarit coast, a scenic hour and a half drive north of Puerto Vallarta at Playa Las Tortugas. “Riviera Nayarit' is largely undeveloped and is being carefully planned to ensure the natural resources are protected. Our 5 mile stretch of pristine undeveloped beach is designated as a protected sea turtle nesting habitat, where, in season, guests can witness this magical nightly event or take part in nighttime baby turtle releases! Our adjacent natural salt water estuary is home to thousands of migratory birds and other wildlife. The nearby villages reflect the spirit of Mexico's charm, where locals farm the rich soils for the produce and tropical fruits they sell at local markets and roadside stands, as well as markets displaying locally made handicrafts. Nearby excursions include a spectacular waterfall, Indian ruins, and a wildlife river boat ride.
Other Activities: sea kayaking, activities at nearby turtle conservation camp
