La Casita de Tucson is a unique private getaway for two adults. Our guesthouse includes a hot tub & counter-current pool and a large deck for picnics and sunbathing. Great view of the Catalina Mts from the pool area.
Located in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains, our guests feel the spaciousness and serenity of the Sonoran Desert and enjoy the beauty of our surrounding mountains and star-filled nights. But we are only 15 minutes from downtown and 25 minutes or less to the University of Arizona and several golf courses, including Quarry Pines & Starr Pass. Silverbell, a well-maintained muni, is only 10 minutes away. Good restaurants are about 15 minutes down the road.
The furnishings and decor are definitely Southwestern comfortable. The main room has a high-end home theater with 56' HDTV, Blue Ray DVD player, and built in surround sound. Here you will find an extensive library of CD's and DVD's. WiFi, of course.
The bathroom has a beautifully tiled walk-in shower. Fresh linens & towels provided.
La Casita has its own backyard, patio, and BBQ and our guests enjoy interesting grounds, including cactus gardens, a rose garden, a mission fountain, and three patios with many strange and fascinating plants. Laundry can easily be arranged. The washer/dryer are in the main residence. Just ask.
La Casita is perfect for those who want to visit Southern Arizona's many attractions, such as Bisbee, Tombstone, Titan Missile Site, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Air and Space Museum and our excellent history museums that illustrate the area's rich Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo heritage. Several fine Indian Casinos and many hiking trails are nearby.
Owner Jim Gressinger is a retired newspaper publisher.
Ms. Karen & I retired to Tucson in 2003. Currently we publish Southern Arizona Guide, a content-rich website with over 100 dining reviews; 50 original videos & dozens of slideshows about the most interesting people & places in Southern Arizona; our recommendations for the best things to see & do; plus a lot of local history & cultural heritage. Last year we had over 250,000 visitors to our website.
We do have advertisers on our website. Our rule is simple. If we cannot wholeheartedly recommend your establishment to our friends & family, you cannot advertise on Southern Arizona Guide.
Our dining reviews are as objective as we can make them. Seldom does a restaurant owner or manager know that we've been to his or her establishment until a week or two later when we publish our review on Southern Arizona Guide or on our Southern Arizona Guide blog.
I almost always take other with me to do a review. The deal is simple. I pay for the meals. They each have to order something different so we can sample a broad spectrum of menu items.
On our Southern Arizona Guide, there are restaurants, attractions, and other places that we DO NOT recommend. For the benefit of our website visitors, we are serious critics, not like you will find elsewhere.
Our casita is roomy & comfortable. It has its own back yard with cactus garden. But our guests can enjoy all of our other gardens such as the rose garden, and the anniversary garden.
Our guests have no sense that there is a major metropolitan area anywhere nearby. Yet, it takes only 15 minutes to get to the Historic District of Downtown Tucson and 22 minutes to the University of Arizona.
When we have no guests, the Casita is our den and home theater. Our guests get to take advantage of a very high end music & video system.
Another advantage of staying at La Casita is that very few locals know the area as well as we do. That's not bragging. It's our job. Our guests take advantage of our local knowledge. The best hiking trails, the best museums, the best art galleries and performing arts, etc. We love sharing our local knowledge. It's what we do.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks in January at La Casita, Jim and Karen's place in the Saguaro Mountain foothills. It was the perfect place for us. The casita was spacious, comfortable and quiet -- much larger in real life than in the pictures on VRBO. The living room has big cushy chairs and blankets to cozy up in, a big-screen TV for those interested, and lots of earthy Southwestern charm. It's located in the foothills of the Saguaro National Park West just minutes from some fabulous trailheads. One of our favorites was the Sweetwater Trail only 5 minutes away (other favorites further afield included the Hugh Norris Trail, the Douglas Spring Trail and the Phoneline Trail). Karen and Jim live next door and were extremely warm and helpful with anything we needed. Karen even lent my wife a pair of her new hiking boots so my wife could try them out. It was unusually cold when we were there or we would have eaten more breakfasts and some dinners outside on the back sitting area looking at Karen's beautiful desert garden and mountains in the distance. The way the casita is oriented you can catch sunrise out back and sunset out front. We were able to use Karen and Jim's hot tub when we wanted, watching the clear stars overhead, and their small pool is also available. The trade-off with being in such a beautiful setting is that restaurants and food shopping are between 10 and 20 minutes away, but it was always so nice coming "home" at the end of the day.
we stayed 5 nights. owners were helpful but not intrusive. poolside, the property looks from west Tucson foothills NW to Catalinas- a perfect sundowner spot. the 'casita ' patio looks into a palo verde/cactii filled wash alive with the dove, quail , hawks and happily the songbirds and hummers which had already left our place in Wyoming, but which we rejoined in Tucson. a very enjoyable, comfortable and quiet base camp for all the exploring, urban and more back country, a person would like to do.
We chose this property because of the interesting descriptions and it being out of the way, but still close to central Tucson. We had a GREAT TIME. The Casita is large with plenty of room for the two of us and everything was well organized and completely comfortable. We enjoyed getting to know our hosts, Jim and Karen, over a few glasses of wine. They provided an unending source of information for places to go, things to see, and outstanding food. We came with a few of our days already scheduled and had no problems filling the rest of the time with either exploring the southern part of Arizona based on Jim and Karen's information, or just sitting back on our patio and watching the never ending parade of birds and other wildlife in their backyard. It was great to completely relax and unwind and experience a part of the country very different from even the desert we have in southern California. We would highly recommend this property and our hosts Jim and Karen!
I took my 17 year old daughter on a special mother/daughter bonding trip for her senior year of high school. We are so glad we picked this VRBO rather than Loews resort, which is where we originally tried to get reservations. It was quiet, cozy, comfortable and everything we could have hoped for. We loved its location in a quiet neighborhood in the foothills. We found a lovely hiking trail just a short drive up the road (Thunderbird/Sweetwater at the end of Camino del Cerro).
The bed was super comfortable and the casita was even more spacious than it looked in the pictures. Jim and Karen were terrific hosts. We felt very well cared for.
Highly recommend this property for a relaxing getaway or base camp for exploring Saguaro National Park! We hope to be back.
We've stayed at many VRBOs, in terrific locations, but this Casita in Tucson is the best. The Casita itself is beautifully appointed, and roomy, but it's the (private) patio and gardens that take the experience over the top. We came to Tucson for a "home base" for some birdwatching. Little did we know that the birding at the Casita would rival anything we found elsewhere -- Karen has birdfeeders up in numerous locations. We saw gila and ladder-backed woodpeckers, Costa's and broad-billed hummers, verdin, curve-billed thrasher, mourning doves, Gambel's quail and many more -- all in our bathrobes on the patio. Never before had we heard of bathrobe birding!! Jim and Karen are terrific hosts, we had great talks on their deck during happy hour. Treat yourselves to a stay at the Casita!!
Our week at La Casita in the Tucson Mountain foothills was a highlight of our two month trip to the Southwest. With its high ceilings and open concept it provided a light-filled, spacious and tastefully decorated dwelling for the two of us and our yellow Lab. A comfy bed, good reading lights, a mini library of books, DVDs and music, a well-stocked kitchen--it was hard to tear ourselves away. Mornings on the patio were a special delight as each day brought new plant and bird discoveries in the stunning desert garden surrounding the Casita.
Jim and Karen were friendly and hospitable; we turned to Jim's website throughout our week for background and day-trip suggestions and appreciated Karen's tips for good dog-walking destinations. We have already recommended La Casita to friends and will continue to do so! Thanks Jim and Karen for providing such a great introduction to the delights of Tucson and surrounding area.
