Catherine Perry is the owner and innkeeper of A House of Open Arms. I helped to build this house from the ground up. I began in 2004 and completed the building process in 2006. I am a full time artist as well as the Innkeeper on this property and I welcome my guests at the ferry dock in Cruz Bay and offer a first evening welcome dinner. I also provide basic essentials for your first few days:,homemade granola, coffee, sugar and tea, cooking spices, etc.
Catherine Perry purchased this cottage in 2006
I purchased this land in 2003 to begin a dream of being a working artist and Innkeeper on St. John. I create unique lighting for many private homes on St. John. I also have items for purchase for my guests! And they are always. welcome to visit my studio during their stay here!
A House of Open Arms is on the electric grid to provide A/C. It also has solar powered water system to insure continuos use even in an electrical pause. The water purified rainwater-fed. House of Open Arms sits amid lush tropical gardens with a 180 degree view of the sea. Cooling easterly breezes come up the hill making the need for a/c very optional. Hawks, kestrels, bananaquits, Lesser Antilles bull finches, Puerto Rican bull finches, and magnificent frigates float above with the crashing sea below. This is truly a nature lover's paradise. It is made all the sweeter by the knowledge much of the electricity and all of the water used on the property are collected from the sun and sky, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
We could not have asked to stay at a more beautiful cottage in St. John. Our hostess lovingly attended to our needs, provided excellent suggestions on where to visit, shop, and eat while staying there. You wont regret your stay with Catherine. We have been many places, but will not forget our stay at the cottage, and the lovely trip to St. John.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage. The host was gracious and thoughtful with helpful tips on the best places to explore. The cottage is very well appointed and provides beautiful views from sunrise to sunset with the added bonus of a spectacular evening sky full of stars. We look forward to returning!
My wife and I enjoyed the coziness of the cottage for 5 nights and fell in love with our perch above the most amazing view to the entrance into Coral Bay and Hurricane Hole. I was a little intimidated about traveling during "hurricane" season but honestly the slow time on the island was wonderfully quiet. We had only one day of intermittent rain while on the island and beautiful weather otherwise. If you are uncertain about St John as your destination I have to say it is now our favorite vacation location. You must experience it with your own senses to appreciate all it offers. There is something for everyone at St John. Quietness with nature, history in the ruins, beauty found not just in the pristine clear water beaches and reefs but also the miles of hiking trails, culture of the locals, shopping and night life, and restaurants with a taste of food for everyone.
Being a guest at House of Open Arms was unlike no other experience we had on a vacation. We enjoy being around other people when we want too and we had plenty of time while on beaches, shopping, or restaurants. However if you want to be secluded and alone then the villa is the perfect place to be off the beaten tourist path. Catherine is a wonderful host and sincerely desires to see you have a wonderful experience and not just a place to stay while on the island. Catherine personally meeting us, and providing a very delicious meal on our first night demonstrated this. Catherine truly loves seeing guests enjoy the cottage, villa and the island. We were blessed meeting Catherine and experiencing her passion and vision for the House of Open Arms.
Quotes I never thought I would hear from my wife, "I love the outside shower. No one can see us out here", "I like doing dishes.... with sunglasses on", "what day is it?" I will never forget the time we spent together here.
What a slice of heaven!! Views to die for! One of a kind host! If you love nature, serenity, privacy, thoughtful amenities, un-plugging off the grid, comfort then look no further than this cottage. Like reading a good book from a new author that captivates you from page 1, the artist/host captivates you from the first moments you arrive. Her canvas is her visceral vision that comprise the compound of which this cottage resides below on the cliff beneath the main residence and studio. This is a dream she shares with all lucky enough to stay at the cottage. The property itself was meticulous sought and and thoughtfully designed by the owner and some talented local architects. The venue unparalleled high atop unspoiled Hurricane Hole. Please review all the pictures and narrative. Then if you are able, go there! Looking forward to our next visit.
We just spent a week at the House of Open Arms in the cottage. Everything was perfect from the time we stepped off the ferry in St. John where Catherine Perry, the owner, was waiting for us. She took us to our car rental and then we followed her back to Coral Bay where House of Open Arms is located. The setting is so spectacular it took our breath away. The cottage itself is lovely and perfectly decorated. It has a beautiful outdoor shower with that magnificent view! The dinner she prepared upon our arrival was delicious and so appreciated after 14 hours of travel. The rest of the week was an adventure. We did a lot of snorkeling and even tried a day of diving (6-Paq Scuba). The island is full of places to investigate and the snorkeling was unbelievable. Catherine directed us to places off the beaten track and we were never disappointed. She was always available for questions, but was unobtrusive otherwise. Our overall experience was 5 star. After a busy day on the island we got to return to the cottage and the beautiful view off the deck where bannanaquits were waiting for their sugar (and would feed out of your hand if you wanted!). My husband says one of his favorite places on planet earth is the chair on that deck!! We miss that view, but are grateful we experienced it! We want to go back and plan a trip for 2 weeks as one week went so fast. If you stay at the House of Open Arms Cottage, you will need 4 wheel drive to get up her driveway and once you get there will have to navigate quite a few steps (much less at the villa). However, my husband is 60 and I am 59 and we were fine. Again, it was part of the adventure and always worth it when we arrived at the cottage! When you plan a vacation from a distance, you never really know how it will turn out. This vacation & location exceeded our expectations!.
We've rented several properties over the years through VRBO and this was our favorite by far. The pictures can't do justice to just how jaw-dropping the views are from the cottage. We loved watching the color of the water and the sky change over the course of the day. You literally feel like you are perched in a cozy nest where everything is perfectly laid out. We also enjoyed the outdoor kitchen and outdoor shower and found that the cottage had all the amenities we needed to make our stay comfortable. We found it hard to tear ourselves away to go out exploring, but we did and as many others shared Catherine is a fabulous hostess and part of what makes this property so special. We only had 4 days and this was our first trip to St. John. Catherine listened carefully to the types of things we liked to do and then helped us design a fantastic itinerary for each day. It was so great to have someone else with local insider knowledge tell us where to find the more off the beaten path and unique places. She also made sure we got to experience a range of different parts of the island without overdoing things. And the first night dinner she cooks you is a real treat and such a great way to settle in. She's also a beautiful potter and the property has many beautiful pieces of her pottery. We were able to purchase a lovely sea turtle bowl that will always be a special reminder of our trip. We know that we will return to House of Open Arms and are already looking forward to what new adventures we will have the next time we are there. If you are looking for privacy and peace in a gorgeous location with a thoughtful and knowledgeable owner this is the property for you.
Coral Bay is the quieter side of the Island with low key eateries and shopping and people. We are located in the perfect spot to get anywhere: East End, Southside, and Northshore beaches as well as Cruz Bay..
Fortsberg is home to the great fort of 1725 and the cannons.
There is a great book and game collection in both the villa and cottage. Visit my art studio upstairs to see work in progress or finished work for sale.
