About The Owner

Aloha! We are Michael & Candi . We caretakers of Maka Nui on which Pali Hale is located . We have lived on this property since 1993. Being Big Island residents for over 22 years this is now home forever. The new owners have enlisted our help to make this a peaceful retreat from their busy life in the mainland. To that end we are always trying!

We love meeting new guests & giving clues as to the best way to enjoy the island while here. There have been many return's , so must be doing something right!

So we hope to hear from all of you & treat you to our slice of paradise.

Mahalo Candi & Michael

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Hawaii

The property is on a cliff over looking Kealakeakua Bay , which is a marine preserve & offers wonderful kayaking -snokeling. The quiet rural area is perfect for enjoying the birds & smells of Hawaii . But is a short 15-20 minute drive to Kailua town for night life.

Maka Nui means eye veiw which is obvious when you enter the gated property.

What makes this cottage unique

First is the coast line veiw, then the fresh fruits & flowers which are yours for the picking. The security of your own resort type setting. There are 2 mascots ( dogs)named Happy & Bamboo which love to meet you also. We also 5 cats and we are their staff! The peace & quiet is a plus for all.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Although we "booked" this property about 7 months in advance of our visit, the owner rented it to someone else and we were forced to scramble for another property. Even though we followed all their instructions regarding payment, they simply returned our check and said, "sorry". This owner is not to be trusted.

A Room with a View

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a lovely little retreat with an absolute killer view. I really enjoyed the privacy and quiet the farm offers as well as the South Kona location. It's convenient to town, south coast beach attractions and other parts of the island. I would highly recommend for those who prefer a more 'natural/local' experience, in comparison to the 'resort/touristy' experience. It's a great place to relax and recharge. Candi was a helpful and gracious host and made me feel at home. Hope to come back soon!

Memorable vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a secluded place that wasn't too far from the volcano, restaurants, shopping etc. This cottage is all that and more. The view is indescribable. Words and pictures aren't enough, it must be seen to be appreciated. Candi was there to help us settle in and answer any questions. It was a very pleasant stay. If you are looking for the perfect place for your second honeymoon or a romantic getaway, This is it.

Captain Cook paradise

The main house and the cottage were both amazing. We stayed at the cottage this time because it was just my husband and me. We arrived very late and Candi made arrangements for us. She was always there for anything we needed and the coffee she made was the best coffee beans I have ever had. We come to Kona a few times a year and will now always stay at one of the properties she manages. She took our stay from very good to great.

Ditto on all the five-star reviews! I couldn't add any more to such a perfect place! It was clean and had most of the conveniences of home - not to mention the perfect hostess CANDI! We love you Candi and will return as long as you are there!

Great spot, Fantastic Host!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for four days as part of our honeymoon to the Big Island.

LOCATION: Near Captain Cook and important amenities very close by like grocery store, gas, kayak rentals, breakfast, other nice food spots, coffee farms, beach, amazing snorkeling. Conveniences nearby but you feel like you are away from the heavily touristed Kailua-Kona, which is a 20-25 minute drive away.

SETTING: Five acre property with a few buildings on it, within a secure gated entrance. The huge and gorgeous main house is a separate building from this rental property, which is a smaller, not super fancy but in a very quaint, comfortable and peaceful setting. This rental is private from the other buildings on the property. Stunning view from the lanai. Waking up to birds, roosters and sipping coffee on lanai while watching sunrise. Weather was always comfortable and we spent both mornings and evenings in shorts and t-shirt typically. Mango, papaya, citrus, bananas, MAC nut tree behind house (an abundance of nuts you can crack and eat), avocado, pineapple...all available for picking.

AMENITIES: the usual stuff plus snorkeling gear, propane mini BBQ with a nice grill, washer/dryer, chairs, beach umbrella, fully stocked kitchen appliances. However, no high quality coffee making supplies, so if you're a coffee connoisseur you may want to bring your own stuff (for instance: only a blade grinder and Mr Coffee drip is available). We like burr grinder and French press...

MANAGER: Candi is a darling of a person and shares the Aloha generously. Available and affable but not overbearing. Lives nearby. Went the extra mile for us on a couple occasions. Also has 100% Kona coffee for sale which was grown on the estate.

I would recommend this rental to a friend.
