About Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray
Originally from Texas (Andrea) and California (Steve), we consider ourselves 'refugees' from the Washington, DC suburbs, where we lived and worked for 18 years. We first visited Rappahannock County in 2002 for a retreat, and immediately fell in love with the Blue Ridge and all the area has to offer. After several years of looking at real estate, we bought the historic 130 acre county 'Poor Farm' in 2004 and began an extensive remodeling of the old farm house and barn. We also added ponds, roads, a dock, fencing, an orchard, extensive flower and vegetable gardens, and animals (mules, horses, goats, chickens, ducks, guineas, dogs, barn cats, with more planned). In 2010, we moved to our new home on the farm--a Virginia farmhouse with a big wrap around porch. And in 2012, we restored the old chicken coop and added chickens to our little menagerie. We also completed work on a new barn that includes a new 'Barn Loft' to accommodate additional visitors. Our farm is our little slice of heaven, and we feel blessed to share it with those who stay with us!

Why Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray chose Sperryville
The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful places on earth to us! And Rappahannock County embodies values that we hold dear: close friends, strong sense of community, amazing commitment to conservation and stewardship of the earth, and a rural lifestyle that allows us stay in touch with ourselves and live our priorities. The area also has a vibrant arts community, world class hiking, excellent restaurants and inns, including the Inn at Little Washington, interesting shops, art galleries, and antique stores, and holistic medicine options. It is also close to Washington, DC and Charlottesville, Virginia, and a little over an hour to both Dulles and Washington Reagan airports. We could not think of a more ideal place to live and work!
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Our property is secluded, at the end of a lovely country lane only 5 minutes from the little town of Sperryville. It is a place where the star lit sky sparkles so clearly at night that you almost lose your breath in awe...where lush flower and vegetable gardens and views of the Blue Ridge feed our soul...where fish jump in the pond and the birds and frogs compete in a chorus...where the only sounds are those of nature. Our cozy, completely remodeled farmhouse provides an ideal place to relax and unwind, and our 130 acres of forest, pastures, and ponds provide endless hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, biking, and exploration opportunities. Our friendly farm animals will love and entertain you. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, and get away from it all, this is just the place!

A slice of heaven
My review title isn't an exaggeration--Andrea and Steve's farm is one of the most beautiful spots you'll find anywhere. The setting is absolutely idyllic, with ducks, guinea hens, friendly barn cats, dogs, goats, and cattle on a hilly, gorgeous piece of property. The house is perfectly appointed, and the front porch allows for mornings spent watching dozens of bluebirds, mockingbirds, and hummingbirds in addition to the guinea fowl and ducks. Andrea and Steve are gracious and knowledgeable--be sure to read the welcome packet to learn the fascinating history of the farm itself, and for great tips on things to see in the area.
We were here for a family wedding, and in addition to being perfectly located for the events we were attending, the farm itself made for a lovely retreat. I would happily return in each season to see the changes in the flowers and foliage.
Spectacular scenery and tremendous fun
Six of us stayed in the farmhouse, with ages ranging from 5-77, and all of us loved our visit! The farmhouse is well-equipped and comfortable, with plenty of space and lots to do. We were delighted to discover a piano inside! There are also games, a fireplace, a woodburning stove, and lots of books.
We spent most of our time outside, though, enjoying the magnificient rolling hills and fall colors. This farm sits on a gorgeous piece of land! Be sure to walk all over the farm and climb the hill to take in the best views. Our favorite part of our stay, though, were the farm animals. Our kids particularly loved collecting eggs and feeding the goats. It was so much fun for them that they didn't notice that it was also an educational experience, ha!
Andrea and Steve were wonderful hosts, and made us feel at home. They provided lots of detailed information to help us with our stay, and we couldn't be happier with our trip. We will definitely return sometime.
very, very special place
Our stay was incredible. It could not have been better. There are simply too many moments to remember. Cardinal Springs Farm sets the standard for a classic farm-of-your-dreams experience.

This property is breathtaking. My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time exploring the grounds, laying out in the sun, fishing in the most beautiful stocked pond, feeding the animals, and so much more. The owners are extremely nice and accommodating and we enjoyed getting to know them. We really appreciated them letting us stay a few hours after the normal check out time. We'll be back!
A wonderful get away
What a great vacation and a great experience. We loved it from the first minute and it was so hard to leave at the end of the week.
The farm house has a nostalgic look, but have all the modern amenities to make your vacation relaxing and comfortable.
The farm is beautiful with flowers all around and amazing vegetable garden. And there is plenty of farm animals as well - Ducks, chickens, goats, horses and mules.
A lovely pond , in which you can swim or paddel while enjoying the the views and admire nature.
Our hosts were very welcoming and made excellent recommendation for hikes and activties in the area.
With four kids it is very hard to relax on a vacation - the farm offered our kids a lot of room to explore, and gave us the peace of mind to allow them to wonder around free...
Looking forward to our next visit to Cardinal Spring farm
We enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again soon. Thank you for leaving the house in such wonderful condition.

A little slice of Eden
I can’t say enough good things about our stay at cardinal springs. My very first impression as we pulled up to the property was that we had just arrived in the shire from the hobbit. Beautiful flowers and wildlife everywhere, an amazing garden, a beautiful pond, mountain views and rolling hills, and a multitude and variety of different farm animals. The farmhouse has a very nostalgic feel and has the important updates and amenities that most people enjoy. Updated kitchens and bathrooms and comfortable mattresses. Our hosts were very kind and accommodating and took time to show us some of the critters there on the farm. The property is also about 15 or 20 minutes from the entrance to Shenandoah national Park which is a treasure in itself. My family and I look forward to getting back to Cardinal Springs Farm. This was the perfect place to find rest for my soul .
Matt and Chrissy,
We thoroughly enjoyed having you stay with us and hope to see you again soon. Thanks for being such wonderful guests.
