Brilliant 4 bedrooms, 3 bath, and 2 kitchens warehouse conversion on Rockland's waterfront with outstanding ocean views! Perfect vacation home for a large family or two families that enjoy traveling together. The home's first-floor living space has soaring 16 foot ceilings, lots of light, large rooms and an open floor plan. Enjoy cooking in the gourmet kitchen (granite counter tops and top of the line stainless steel appliances) all while looking out the windows at the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse or prepare a quick meal in the guest kitchen over looking the pool. The rest of the house ranges over three levels (over 3500 square feet), with exposed brick and hardwood and tile floors. Outside enjoy three viewing decks, a private in ground swimming pool, picnic area with horse shoe pit, barbecue and lobster cooker.
The description(s) of the property were spot on for this listing! You really just kind of show up. Everything is provided and you don't even need to spend time cleaning when you leave! The house was very clean and the owners are very friendly! We even bumped into them once or twice in town.
The location was beautiful. The view from the decks were fantastic. We got to watch several schooners past the breakwater/lighthouse and into the harbor. Every morning there were spectacular photos to be taken whether the weather was sunny (which it was most of the time) or foggy (which it was one or two mornings).
We were able to walk into town for the Lobster Festival or take drives up to Acadia or down the coast to Pemaquid/Bath/Wiscasset. There are a bunch of nice restaurants in the downtown Rockland area. You can walk down the waterfront to all of them.
Driving to the other attractions in the Midcoast area aren't that bad. You can be in Bath or Pemaquid in an hour or so, Camden in less than 15 minutes. Even Acadia wasn't that bad a drive-two hours or less, but worth every minute of the drive. The views are spectacular. Hit Fort Knox in Prospect while you are driving to Acadia.
The pool was used every day by our kids. Towels were provided at the house so you didn't even need to pack them! Plus, we pulled out the bikes that are provided and took a ride or two.
There is a nice little beach close by where you can go hunting for rocks or sea glass. The boys found a nice bed of hermit crabs and spent part of an afternoon seeing how many they could find. They found a lot!
The folks in town were very friendly and answered many questions. They didn't just treat you like a tourist or someone that was passing through.
We will be going back. Rockland is in a beautiful location. You can do tons of stuff with not too much driving. The house is great to come back to every night. Plenty of room to spread out. We played foosball every day and had some pretty vicious games!
To close, I don't think that there are too many locations where one can lie in their bed and look out the window to an active lighthouse! This is one of those spots. Well worth the rental!
A thousand things that the pictures displayed on the Homeaway site do not tell you about this property - for example:
• flooring that was peeling and stained,
• bed linen that was stained and marked,
* pillows that had not been replaced in a long time that smelt of previous occupants
* wooden furniture that was heavily marked and chipped,
• Loose pieces of chipboard lying randomly around the property
evidence of loose wiring,
• bedrooms that lacked basic window fittings,
• old bedsheets that were used as table cloths to hide very heavily marked and chipped tables (that were described to us as antique)
• smoke detectors which had significant parts missing from them (thus rendering them useless); and
• stained and marked furniture and floor mats
* crockery drawers and cupboards in kitchen a complete mess full of disorganised and random utensils along with remains of opened packets of food etc from previous occupants
It is a shame that when we addressed our issues with the owner, that she refused to acknowledge or address them and that we have had to escalate our dispute. Having stayed in many properties in Europe and the USA, this has got to be the most disappointing and most misrepresented one that i have ever stayed in. My advice is stay clear of this property ...!!!
We stayed in this house for a week in August, to begin with the town of Rockland is charming, cute restaurants and shops in downtown and within walking distance of the house, there are also a few beaches around and in particular my grandchildren enjoyed Owls Head beach which is only about 5 miles from the house.
The house itself is unique and is exactly as it appears in the pictures. It is particularly suited to a family vacation, it was really nice to have 3 full bathrooms and 3 TV's! The kitchen is well equipped, all linens are provided and you need to bring nothing. The pool area is great and the kids really enjoyed the pool. We only had to contact Susan once and that was to find the spare tank for the gas grill and she was very responsive. The house is well maintained, very clean and in particular the master suite is beautiful. We hope to return next Year! Thank you Susan for a perfect vacation, we created many family memories!
Couldn't have asked for a better vacation! Ten Floridians (six adults/4 grandchildren) spending the July 4th week in Maine. From the outstanding accommodations, close proximity to town, excellent restaurants , the scenic coastline; all were truly ideal. The house comfortably provided space for three families and at the same time had living areas large enough where we could all congregate. Highly recommend the pool as we took advantage of it almost daily....The kids and adults loved it! The pool and the nearby grill provided a perfect setting for our
July 4th cookout. The holiday parade in nearby Thomaston was thoroughly enjoyed by all. On the 4th we were able to view fireworks displays from three different towns without leaving the house. We woke each morning to the exceptional view of the sailboat filled harbor and at night enjoyed a great view of the lighthouse. We found the New England coastal feel we were seeking.Everyone we met was extremely friendly and helpful. As a side note, we rented cribs, high chairs, and strollers from Mid-Coast Family Rentals. Wow...talk about customer service. ...fantastic!! A true highlight was meeting the home's owner and gaining insight to the property's history . From start to finish, it was a tremendous vacation!
we spent a week here in mid July. Our family had a great time. Plenty of space. And we loved the 5-10 minute stroll into town to have dinner most nights. Enjoyed sitting on the decks watching the sun go down with a glass of wine. Only issue: it was a bit warm without a/c. But the fans kept us pretty cool.
Stayed a week in this spacious relatively well-maintained conversion with my and my brother's family; total 5 adults and 6 kids ages 1-11. Theater style tv, pool table, swimming pool, board games, kids activities, books kept little ones entertained. Awesome views from loft, bedrooms; kitchen and front porch view of water partly obscured by a factory that nonetheless had kids enthralled because of slow moving freight cars from time to time (may want to check google maps to get an idea). You should definitely wake up early am to see sunrise from loft over water--gorgeous views of water, sailboats, lighthouse, town. About 1/2 mile from downtown Rockland, easy walks to restaurants and eateries. We drove out to Acadia/bar harbor (2 hours), local museums (minutes), and oceanfront botannical gardens (1.5 hours) among other destinations so relatively convenient location if you want to see more of Maine. Although small issues noted, owner lives in town and responsive to requests. You should consider this place among others for mid-coast Maine location and spacious accommodations.
Rockland, Maine is a great place for visiting and exploring Midcoast Maine. Historic Main Street provides local shopping and dining opportunities and day trips in any direction provide ample rewards...a ten minute drive to Camden Harbor, twenty minute drive to the quaint fishing village of Port Clyde where you can catch the ferry to Monhegan Island and just an hour and a half drive from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine. The Farnsworth Art Museum is a close walk along with numerous galleries and live entertainment at the Strand Theater. Penobscot Bay is the place to sail when the weather is fair on one of our many windjammers, islands to discover, mountains to climb in the spring and fall, and winter activities as well. Here you can return to the more simple life you may have never lived. Rockland people have always welcomed visitors and treated them with friendliness and respect. You will find a quality of life that will make you want to stay forever!
Golf: Samoset Resort Golf Club is an 18 Hole PGA Oceanside course. Known as the 'Pebble Beach of the East' and is a 7 minute drive.
