About the property

Once a Victorian Bank Depository,Now An Exceptional Huge Open Plan Loft Space

Featured in several design magazine lay outs, the latest being "Living Etc",the UK's largest selling modern homes magazine("a loft apartment that literally dazzles with its own brilliance").

This is a fantastic conversion of an industrial space with the charismatic edge, cool attitude and roomy interiors that personifies the best of industrial loft living. Awash in natural light and borderless spaces there is a mix of chic and curious pieces and timeless style.Located in the absolute epicenter of the East End neighborhood of Shoreditch in a former 19th century Victorian bank depository, this rambling 3000 square foot penthouse seamlessly pairs the best of turn of the century romanticism with edgy modern personality.

Perched four floors above the city streets with views overlooking the tree lined Calvert Ave and the spire of St Leonard’s Church, the interiors have been restored with a light touch that bridges the gap between retro and modern living. The remnants of the industrial space are cleverly repurposed into the open plan layout arranged over one floor that spans the length of the rooftop. The main living space is vast and flooded with light from the banks of windows that illuminate the whitewashed interiors that are divided into cozy individual living spaces. The bright eat-in kitchen is perched on a pedestal at the sunny far end of the room and the two en-suite double bedrooms occupy the perimeters.

A beguiling collection of distinctive furnishings, art and decor from the odds and ends of 20th century design are mingled with fun and colorful modern retrofits and personal pieces that tie it all together. Artists represented include Tom Beard,Alex Hartly,Alison Shulnitz,Paula Rego,Carlos Sena, G.Sorracas,Yolanda Sonnabend,Noe Klablin and Andy Warhol.Furnishings feature pieces by Fornasetti,Pecival Lafer,Willy Rizzo,Hans Wegner and Paco Rabanne.

There is also a external fire escape staircase where you can enjoy an informal coffee outside in the sunshine amongst planted foliage with city views.

Very unusual to get a property of these epic proportions in central London.

The water supply is processed to provide soft water, rather than the hard water London is known for.

Please note that there is no elevator and being on the 4th floor means this apt is not suitable for the elderly or infirm.

There is an oversized 19th century copper Indian day bed in the main living space.

A blow up bed can also be provided if needed.

A free cleaning service is provided every Thursday afternoon.

Shoreditch is now the unquestionable epicenter of 'hip' London.

Over the last decade London's East End has transformed from an enclave for artists into a magnet for all that's creative and hipster in the capital. If it's cool, you'll find it here first. As poster boy for London's relentless rejuvenation,Shoreditch personifies youthful energy.Witness the exciting restaurants, art galleries, music venues, concept boutiques and pioneering tech start-ups jostling for space in this concrete jungle.Shoreditch may have swapped some of it's previous grittiness for glamour, but beneath the glossy surface lies a world bristling with creativity.

You are within minutes of Hoxton Square,Brick Lane, Columbia Road Flower Market, the Financial Square mile etc

Local Stations include Shoreditch High St, Old Street and Liverpool St. Buses are frequent from Shoreditch High St and Old St.

***** Please note I also have available a contemporary glass fronted penthouse in nearby Hoxton Square (ID 6884780).

Also if you decide on a trip to Rio De Janeiro you must check out my duplex penthouse in Ipanema (ID 421439).

About Alastair G.

Very widely travelled.Brought up in the Far East and Australia.I am fascinated by design and making a space work. I am usually in transit between my Lutyen's country home in Kent and London's East End. I have developed a number of properties in London(Shoreditch,Hoxton) ,Barcelona(Gothic Quarter) and Rio De Janeiro(ipanema). This is not my main vocation, but it keeps me busy along with being a parent !

Alastair G. purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Alastair G. chose London

Grayson Perry said he really could not trust the taste of anyone living west of Marble Arch.Yes Shoreditch can overdo the hipster element, but right now it is without doubt the most exciting location to be in London.Saves a lot on taxis!

What makes this apartment unique

Very unusual to get a property of these enormous proportions in central London.Wonderful light streaming in from large industrial windows in the vast open plan living space overlooking views of the trees of Calvert Ave and the spire of St Leonards Church(1730's).

Additional features include WiFi, 2 TVs with Apple TV, Netflix, Sky Cable and DVD player. Security and intercom system. Complimentary housekeeping (every Thursday) and laundry facilities(Miele washing machine and a separate dryer).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the use of your wonderful home. The decor and location of your home made for a very enjoyable stay.I will highly recommend your space to all HomeAway users. My family enjoyed the open floor plan.It gave them room to kick back and relax.

The most perfect flat in London - with the best host!

  • 5 of 5

I can not say enough how perfect this flat is! Shoreditch is where it's at - the restaurant and bar scene is just wonderful. Art everywhere and just a great vibe!

Easy to manage transportation between buses and the Underground as well. We did Uber at times - thanks to Mother Nature not being the best hostess.

The flat itself is unbelievable. So spacious, super comfortable beds and Alastair was the best host we could have ever had! Super responsive no matter where he was (or where we were!). It was our little sanctuary/home away from home. Lots of unique features, art and details, very modern appliances and the best showers in all of London! It is a bit of a hike up a few staircases, but it is well worth it!

We will always recommend this place and will certainly stay here with each trip to London! Thank you so very much, Alastair and Michael!

My family of 5 stayed in this flat for a week at the end of July. First off, the owner is fantastic to work with- he answered all questions and was very accessible. The apartment is as advertised- it is huge and very eclectic. Coming from the states, we were a bit unsure about the Shoreditch location- if you are looking for a quite and tranquil spot to relax this is probably not the place for you. The area is vibrant with many pubs and restaurants right outside of your door. The closest tube station is a 5 or 6 minute walk which was nice. There are two bedrooms with sleeping arrangements for 4 plus an air mattress. I would stay here again if the opportunity presented itself.

One of The Crown Jewels

This is very special apartment indeed. It is very spacious, spotless and brilliantly located to accomodate your London adventure. It the main thoroughfare of cosmopolitan Shoreditch, it has public transport at your door with excellent restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. Your hosts could not be more hospitable or helpful, initiating the warm welcome that this apartment extends to even the most discerning traveller. It has every imaginable facility. I could not recommend it more highly.

Couldn't Recommend this Place Highly Enough

  • 5 of 5

I consider that I was fortunate to stay in this apartment for 2 weeks a huge privilege!

I have stayed in many places and this is definitely one of the most interesting i have stayed in in London. The main living area is a huge space but also manages to feel cosy with a great corner for some down time watching the TV.

Everything in the apartment is so well curated you will spend the first day at least just looking around the apartment and taking it all in, the furniture is all modern classics and the art work scattered around is super interesting.

The main bedroom again is a great size with an incredibly comfy bed and given the location of the apartment so quiet and peaceful. We had family stay a couple nights over the weekend who also said the second bedroom was just as comfortable and with so much space and two separate bathrooms we hardly even bumped into each other.

It is stocked with everything you will need from the bedroom linens, bathroom towels and everything you would need in the kitchen to feel at home and everything is great quality.

The location has everything you will need surrounded by great restaurants, bars and shops for big brands and independents as well as food shops for stocking up on supplies.

If you are bored of staying in hotels or are looking for somewhere with more space and just generally a more interesting and unique stay somewhere then I genuinely can not recommend this place highly enough! I will hopefully be staying here again sometime soon.

Do not miss the opritunity to stay here when in London

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a week at this wonderful home. The loft is even better than what the photos show. The unit is open, bright, clean, and well maintained. The design is highlighted by a wonderful collection of art and mid-century furnishings. The bedrooms were comfortable and quiet. There are two large full bathrooms with walk in showers and a soaking tub in the master on suite. The kitchen has all of the amenities you could ask for, even though we went out to eat almost every meal.

We were looking to spend time in a neighborhood that was interesting and away from the typical tourist areas.

The Shoreditch neighborhood is magnificent. It is filled with wonderful coffee shops on every street. We had no problems finding interesting places to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and did not have one bad meal the entire time there. There are so many great places to eat and drink that the problem was making up our minds where to go. As for shopping, the small shops that line each of the side streets around the loft kept us captivated for the entire week we were there. No matter which direction you decide to go when you walk out the front door you were bound to find interesting and one of a kind shops. When you do decide to leave the neighborhood and go out to see London the Liverpool tube is just a short walk away and will take you anywhere in the city. Cabs and busses were also available and right outside our door.

I would recommend this location to all ages. We felt right at home the moment we walked in the door. My kids are 21 and 16 they didn't want to leave. They found the book stores, coffee shops, restaurants and shopping in the neighborhood to be some of the most interesting they have ever encountered. So do not miss the opportunity to stay in this wonderful loft when visiting London.

Vacation in a Museum of Midcentury/Modern Design!

  • 5 of 5

Wow. Just, wow. This converted warehouse apartment is hipster heaven--and it is located in a neighborhood that is bursting with restaurants, shopping and pubs/bars/nightlife galore. The bedrooms are private and comfortable, the bathrooms luxurious, the furnishings and art are the stuff of a collectors dreams. The apartment is huge--there are laundry facilities and a great kitchen area. The nearest tube is 10 minute walk (Old Street)--and busses are plentiful right outside the door to take you to London Bridge Station (the 149) where you can connect to get just about anywhere. Best of all, Alistair, the manager and Michael, the owner are amazingly gracious, accommodating, helpful, reliable and easy to work with. We have stayed at a number of VRBO properties and I have never been more impressed with the customer service and confidence that these two lovely gents provide. Thanks for a fantastic experience.

Shoreditch was once the haunt of the Elizabethan artsy set.Shakespeare spent his early career living and working here and many of his contemporaries are buried in St Leonards Church, which the apt overlooks. By the 19th century the area had degenerated into a crime-ridden slum featuring Jack the Ripper,to be followed a few decades later by the Blitz.

Then, in the 1990s, creative types-think contemporary artists (Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, et al) and forward-thinking design and media geeks once again moved in, drawn by the urban-grunge vibes, the multiculturalism, and it's sense of history. They transformed Shoreditch's aging industrial buildings into funky lofts, open-plan offices, and buzzing nightclubs. These days, now that it's the city's ground zero of artsy urban cool, it is far from a low-rent district. It is now a fast evolving go to destination which is very much a foodie destination from dining pool side at Shoreditch House to 24 hour beigels to Vietnamese to the Rivington Grill. Eclectic shopping(no chain stores are permitted) and art galleries abound with a now legendary night life. The axis of London has moved eastwards, and Shoreditch is very much it's beating heart.
