Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

We are Located on the southeast shore on the Kalapana coast. As a completely separate guest home on nearly 3 acres of an ocean front parcel, this very private rental is nestled in a lush tropical garden and has all the charm of old Hawaii. This all cedar cottage provides homey comfort in a relaxed rural area away from the usual tourist scene yet with easy accessibility to other attractions. A private driveway with covered carport, a sunny yard and an abundance of flowers and fruit trees add to the convenience and pleasure of staying in your own piece of paradise. In the 2009 Summer Edition of 'Outside Magazine', Peaceful Cove Cottage was rated one of the top 50 best places in the country to 'get away from it all'.

However, high speed satellite internet with wi-fi is provided for those times when you must stay connected.

Mostly you will be tempted to relax on the lanai in some of the best weather Hawaii has to offer; or let the soothing sound of ocean waves invite you to meander along your own private nature trail through a pristine wooded area rich in native flora. A minute's walk brings you to the beautiful ocean and peaceful cove. Blue skies, sparkling water and a fascinating coastline lie before you. Walk right along the ocean easily for miles on an old lava field and discover volcanic black sand and interesting lava formations,(lower lava trail). Hunt for shells and witness spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and if you're lucky you may view at a safe distance the incredible sight of recent lava activity flowing into the ocean. Or take the 'upper lava trail' which is a bit more rugged but walkable on the dramatic cliffs with sea spray propelling high into the air and a 360' view taking in the coastline and mountain. Also awaiting you at this spot we have named 'turtle bay' is the privileged chance to watch sea turtles riding the waves and/or diving for food The shoreline is rocky and the ocean not suitable for swimming but these walks are a one-of-a-kind exploration. Swimming and snorkeling are available in nearby tide pools or warm ponds within a short drive. Also a small black sand beach where you may enter the water is within a short drive.

We welcome you to visit us in Kalapana on the Big Island for a vacation of a life time.

About Cheryl

Our family transplanted to Hawaii from the mainland in 1975 and have made this incredible island our home ever since. We bought this lovely 3 acre ocean front property in 1986 while it was in it's original pristine state. Carefully and tenderly we sculpted the environment to maintain the natural integrity of the land. We built 2 homes on the property, one where we live full time and the other as a guest cottage. The homes are separated by lush vegetation with separate driveways and cannot be seen or heard from one another yet we are close enough to be available to our guests at any time. The result is a unique tropical landscape where we offer our guests a glimpse of life in true old Hawaii.

Cheryl purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Cheryl chose Puna District

Kalapana is a place of exquisite natural beauty and real Hawaii charm. This is a rural community where a slow pace is the norm and the sense of aloha is respected and practiced.

We were drawn to this area for having the best weather on the island. The prevailing trade winds blow from just the right direction to keep the temperature pleasant all year round. The rainfall is gentle and light- just enough to allow for an abundance of flowers and foliage, but not too wet. The sun shines, the sea sparkles and at night the stars seem close enough to touch.

What makes this cottage unique

Please note that the grounds are graced by four sweet cats. Kea, Wili, Leo and Bro are right at home in your lap or they will become scarce if you prefer. They are not allowed inside and they have their meals at my home. We also have lovely song birds and seed is provided if you choose to feed the birds.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Peaceful Cottage Cove was a perfect paradise vacation. Cheryl was very welcoming on arrival. I arrived shortly after a storm, but the only effect on the cottage was no power for a couple of days. No problem! I was almost disappointed when it did come on. It's the place to relax and be immersed in aloha. Sunrises over the Pahoehoe lava and the Pacific are a short walk through the forest. You can hear -- even feel the waves back at the cabin. Birds, geckos and frogs abound in the beautifully maintained landscaping. Make sure to stay over a Wednesday to go to Uncle Roberts Awa (Kava) Bar. It's a short walk down the road (or over the lava) and you won't find a more genuine Hawaiian evening of music, food and drink. The Kalapana coast is now one of my favorite spots and I will be back to the cottage again and again. Thank you Cheryl!

Best vacation spot ever

  • 5 of 5

The pictures on the VRBO site are real -- no perspective tricks or photo-shopping. The kitchen was outfitted and worked perfectly for us. We found the couches, chairs, and beds comfortable. The coqui frogs were no louder than cicadas. I was not bothered by them in the least. The wifi was quite good.

We stayed at two other condos during our Hawaii vacation that were more typical vacation rentals. The thing is, you could take either of those two condos, including the grounds, set them on any beach in the country, and hardly know the difference. Peaceful Cove Cottage, however, is uniquely Hawaiian. My kids loved the geckos that live in and around the cottage. By the end of our stay, one of them was bold enough to climb onto the table and drink condensation from the outside of our water glasses. The path to the ocean is lovely, as is the path though the volcanic rock that parallels the ocean. We picked and ate mangos and papayas right from trees.

Wednesday night at Uncle Roberts was a lot of fun. We got to see real Hawaiians play and dance to real Hawaiian music. No faux grass skirts or elaborate plastic headdresses in sight. Also, as of summer 2017, Kalapana is the closest starting point to seeing the active lava flow. We rented bicycles at the end of the road to go see it.

With respect to the one negative review on the VRBO site, I have to say that my family does not agree. We found Peaceful Cove Cottage to be neat, clean, well-maintained, and comfortable. However, it is designed to be cooled by the near-constant Hawaiian breeze, which means the screen doors and windows are nearly always open. The air is not being constantly filtered by an AC, so if you go looking in the corners and crevices for dust, you'll probably find it. The humidity is the same indoors as out, which means most steel is going to show rust in time. In short, the cottage is part of the Hawaiian environment -- not separate from it -- and that is really what makes it unique. (I didn't look for or see gecko poop, and wouldn't know it if I saw it. Ha ha.)

Our vacation was over the July 4 holiday, which is also peak temperature in Hawaii. We were perfectly fine morning, evening, and night, but we had to find somewhere to go in the afternoons. That was really not a problem since there is plenty to do. We spent two afternoons snorkeling in the nearby tide pools, which was a lot of fun. One of these days, I would love to come back here for a visit in early spring.

A great Place!

  • 5 of 5

It is hard to find anything about this rental that is negative. It is clean, beautifully kept and has everything one would need in a vacation rental.

The setting is magnificent and the bird feeder and the presence of "almost tame" geckos is a natural touch. There is always a breeze blowing. The Internet service is fine and there is plenty of hot water. In addition, the water is not catchment water which means it is perfectly safe to drink.

There are coqui frogs around the cottage and I got used to them, though bringing some earplugs might not be a bad idea. They are really not a serious problem in my mind as the noise is consistent and should not cause most folks a problem. It would certainly not stop my recommending the Peaceful Cove as an ideal place to spend time while visiting the area.I would guess that you would be hard-pressed to find a place free of coqui in this area. It is located close to shopping for groceries, though you might consider buying basics in Hilo after heading from the airport.

I would return in a heartbeat. The owner is charming, helpful and welcoming.

Charming Cottage By the Ocean

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful stay with Cheryl at her adorable home.  From the moment we drove down the driveway we knew this place was special.  The rooms were so inviting with all the comforts of home but prettier! We loved just looking through all the windows with views of the jungle yard.  We took a walk down "the private path" to the ocean and were just mesmerized  by the beauty of the walk and the ocean.  Cheryl came by to introduce herself, and ask if we had any questions or needed any information about what to do in the area. She was charming and interesting to talk to. We ended up just staying at the house and walking to look at the ocean and felt we had a terrific vacation!

Lovely spacious cottage, great locstion

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean, well equipped, and well located with a secret path to the ocean and not far to lava fields, Cool drives, a hidden black sand beach, ripe pools etc. Cheryl's memoir of her life by the volcano was enlightening. We wished we stayed longer!
