About the property

1 Bedroom Detached Cottage With a Private Walled Courtyard

Located near the sea front and in Hastings historic old town, Potting Cottage offers the ideal escape for a romantic weekend for two or for a longer and leisurely break. It is an early 19th century fisherman's cottage that oozes charm and cosiness. Attached at its side is a smoke house that the fishermen would use to prepare the days catch of fish. Made fully residential in the late 1970's, both the smoke house and the cottage have been recently converted into this snug hideaway for holiday makers. The conversion retains the cottages rustic character while having been transformed into a special and stylish holiday home experience.

As the cottage is situated on a twittern (footpath) and is in the heart of the Old Town there is no dedicated parking, there are however pay and display car parks with a 5 to 10 minute walk and once you are in the Old Town everything is within walking distance and strolling around is the best way to enjoy the sites of the many medieval Old Town buildings.

From the moment you enter, you will set your eyes upon the living room's centre piece the original early 19th century stone fire place newly restored and equipped with a with a wood burning stove. The room has solid wooden floors a new sofa bed and an antique armchair. There is a 32" LCD TV with built in DVD and Freeview. The living room also contains an antique wooden dining table that seats four. Accessed by patio doors, is a small private courtyard which can be lit by fairy lights, the courtyard is equipped with a portable barbeque and four chairs and table.

Located in the lower part of the old smoke house, the kitchen is compact and equipped for all needs containing a four ring ceramic hob cooker, washing machine, dish washer, fridge with ice box and microwave. There is also a kettle, toaster and stove top espresso maker. The kitchen has a supply of spices, herbs, oil & vinegar, tea, coffee and sugar.

On the first floor you will discover the atmospheric bedroom with a vaulted ceiling from which hangs a vintage chandelier. The room contains a small built in cupboard and a TV, DVD and Freeview. the comfortable king size bed can be easily detached into two single beds. From the bedroom you have access to the bathroom, which was converted from the top part of the smoke house. Here you will find a walk in shower, toilet, basin, mirrored bathroom cabinet containing a shaver point and heated towel rail.

The cottage is ideally suited for one or two adults as it contains one bedroom with en suite bathroom. However the main bed can be divided into two single beds if required or there is option of using the sofa bed downstairs. Please note that although the cottage is on two floors the general layout is open plan and the only access to the bathroom is through the bedroom. We can not accept more than two guests per booking. We are happy to have up to two small house trained dogs stay, we provide a roll out bed and food and water bowls. Towels and bedsheets are provided. we also provide beach towels for in the warmer months. The cottage has free WiFi. There is a picnic hamper and a portable barbeque left for you to take out on days to the beach or the East Hill country park.

Do also be aware that as this is a coastal town there is naturally a noticeable population of sea gulls and sometimes they can be noisy.

About Helen Perks

We moved to Hastings from North London in 2011. We have spent the past year renovating Potting Cottage and enjoying our new life by the sea.

Helen Perks purchased this house in 2012

Why Helen Perks chose Hastings

Like many people we came to visit Hastings and fell in love with it's relaxed seaside pace, but also the vibrant feel of the Old Town.. The pace of life may be relaxed but that doesn't mean it isn't fun!

What makes this house unique

The moment we walked into Potting Cottage, long before it was renovated, we knew that it had a character that was all its own. The quirky fireplace ahead of you, the vaulted ceiling as you walk upstairs. In an instant you know you have walked into something special.

Delightful cottage in the heart of Hastings Old Town

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, stylish cottage with everything you could need and so convenient for all of the shops and restaurants in the old town. Hastings Old Town is crammed with amazing architecture and is oozing history which is almost tangible! The shops are fabulous and unique, with not a single chain store, which is so refreshing. The only negative about the cottage is that it can be noisy, especially as the bakery next door opens very early. This didn't bother us but may if you are a light sleeper! Would thoroughly recommend a visit to Hastings and Potting Cottage.

Aylesford, Kent

Very Alluring Cottage.

What an absolutely beautiful place to spend a few nights!

This cottage is perfect for any couples wanting a quiet short break, and I cannot fault the owners whatsoever. When I arrived, the cottage was spotless with fresh towels and bedding. I was also greeted with fresh eggs, a loaf of bread and bottle of juice, Thank you!

No need to bring or buy any essential odds and ends such as dish washing tablets, cooking oil etc, as the owners provide plenty for you stay. I regret going food shopping to an out of town supermarket, as there is a bakery next door and a deli shop.

They have a reasonably large range of foods you can buy, so if a next time comes, I won’t be going out of town for food. However, this could be expensive if you eat a substantial amount of food.

There are also plenty of restaurants in the old town of Hastings if you do not feel like cooking at home.

In addition, the cottage really is very beautiful with lots of original features. If you are taller than some people, you might want to be careful or you might bump your head a few times! Also, the ceiling lamp above the dining table is a bit too low for my liking. I bumped my head on it a few times when getting off my seat, so the lamp could be lifted a little bit higher.

Lastly, the little court yard is very nice in evenings and can be used for a little BBQ feast. In spite of that, maybe a small roll out canopy could be as a future improvement, as Hastings being a coastal town; the rain can come and go quick.

I enjoyed my stay here with my partner and I would love to visit again on a long weekend break. Thank you for everything and best wishes for the future!
