Country Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Large Garden and Pool.
This splendid old villa with its large pool and beautiful garden is ideal for both sight seeing and also a relaxing holiday. It is situated close to the walled towns of Cortona and, overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago. It is located centrally between Florence and Rome, and Siena and Perugia/Assisi.
The main accommodation is upstairs where the rooms are large and airy as a consequence of the incredibly high ceilings. A pleasant breeze cools the bedrooms as the house is on a slight hill. The floors are all terracotta or terrazzo tiles and keep the house cool. There is a large very well equipped kitchen/dining room upstairs as well as a sitting room. There is a high quality Clavinova piano in the sitting room.
Downstairs there is a very comfortable large garden room with three sets of French doors looking out over the garden and pool. It has wicker sofas and chairs, a dining table and chairs and a small kitchenette. There is a downstairs shower room for use after your dip in the pool.
Because we know you will want lots of cold drinks, there is a drinks cooler for your wine, beer and soft drinks as well as a large fridge/freezer. In fact everything you might need to spend a relaxing time by the pool or in the garden without having to go upstairs. Because the bathrooms have showers, we provide a baby bath, and there is also a safety gate which can be fitted to the top of the stairs. There are also 2 high chairs and 2 cots. WiFi is available not only in the house but also by the pool. There are numerous interesting outbuildings: a block of three pig styes (no longer in use as such), a huge bread oven which at one time was used by the whole village to bake their bread and pies once a week, a picturesque well, two hay barns which are now used as garages, and finally a tobacco drying tower which was erected when tobacco was still grown in this area. There is also lots of parking space.

About Alan and Lydia Woolley
We are a retired couple who bought this villa when our children were teenagers. It is truly our second home, not something we bought to let. As well as renting the villa, we have all been coming here for holidays together and separately for 25 years and now we are delighted that our little grandchildren also look on it as a second home.
Alan and Lydia Woolley purchased this Villa in 1992
Why Alan and Lydia Woolley chose Castiglione del Lago
We bought this villa because although it is in a rural setting there are many amenities close by. We can walk to the village and go to the bar and the little very well-stocked supermarket. Our nearest town of Castiglione del Lago is only 4km away. It has spectacular ramparts overlooking the lake and in the 16th century was said to be the strongest fortress in Europe. If we want to visit the many wonderful towns and cities close by (Cortona, Siena, Assisi, Perugia, Florence, Rome) the roads and railways make it easy. The lake is beautiful and adds another dimension to the holiday. There is sailing and kitesurfing. There are three islands in the lake which are served by frequent ferries from Castiglione del Lago. There are also several small well kept lakeside beaches where children can play with their buckets and spades and paddle safely. If you would like a 4 course home-cooked meal delivered to your door, two village ladies will provide it with produce from their farms.
What makes this Villa unique
This villa is large and airy. It has enormously high original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. The large pool is ideal for cooling off in the summer and the shady pergola is a wonderful setting for alfresco lunches and dinners. There are many fruit trees in the garden and depending on which season you visit, you are welcome to pick cherries, apricots, plums, figs, pears and apples. There is also a small vineyard with grapes which ripen in the autumn. If you happen to be at the house at the beginning of May, there is the unique opportunity to visit the annual kite festival (Coloriamo i Cieli) where people come from all over the world to show off their amazing kites and also hot air balloons. In this area there are numerous restaurants and bars, many of them with views of the lake. In July/August there is a jazz festival in local towns and also concerts in the main church in Castiglione often involving foreign choirs as well as the Scuola Cantorum whose home church this is.

Fantastic villa, gorgeous surroundings
We've just returned after a week at this wonderful home from home. Our children loved the pool, I loved running near the lake and around the town and my husband loved simply relaxing by the pool in the shade. We managed to visit Assisi, Montalcino and Pisa which were all memorable! Good food, good wine and wonderful memories. Thank you to the Woolley family. What a pleasure it was to deal with you-so helpful and informative. Super, super, super!
Thank you so much Gillian for your wonderful review. We are so glad that you all enjoyed your stay because we know that your children thought they preferred France to Italy. Let's hope it will encourage them to come again (with their parents of course). It is always a good idea to visit Italy early in the year because then it is not usually too hot for sight-seeing. Hope you had lots of cherries to eat.
Well maintained and managed. Comfortable for our 7 person family. Rural setting is private and peace
We had a lovely 2 week stay in rural Umbria just as we had dreamed of. This property is well maintained and well managed by the owners and their in-country caretakers. The villa has all of the comforts of a home enabling you to prepare meals, do laundry, and let your children play safely outside. The pool is fabulous for families who love to swim! The pool man came several times to keep it clean for us. The gardens and grounds are well kept and peacefully set out. I especially enjoyed picking grapes for our breakfast table each morning! From the living area you look out over fields of wheat, olives, and grapes to the hills across lake Trasamieno. We enjoyed walking the quiet road to the bar and the market each day. This property is excellently located to make day trips into all of Tuscany, Umbria, and Perugia. We also made the drive to Venice in just under 3.5 hours. Also just 2 hours to Rome. The town of Castiglione is lovely and we spent a few mornings and afternoons there. The market day was very fun, as were the many gelato and pizza places nearby. We were able to have Milva prepare us a meal twice and it was such a treat to have authentic, local, Italian home cooking. We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to any family looking for a comfortable home from which to explore lovely Italy.
After a long and stressful flight followed by a car journey from Pisa with 2 young children we arrived at Villa Palareto. The first thing we noticed when we got out of the car was the wonderful smell of all the flowers in the exceptionally well kept gardens the next thing we see before unloading the car is the main garden and pool. WOW, the stresses of travelling were instantly lifted. The garden and pool were just stunning, everything was perfect.
The house was equally fantastic we loved the history and the layout was ideal for myself, wife 2 kids and my parents. The downstairs kitchenette is a great base for drinks and eating outside which we did every day. We were blessed with a cloud free 30 degrees+ every single day for a full week.
During our stay we visited Castiglione del lago, Cortona and a local water park, we had all intentions of doing more but the villa was so wonderful we opted to have more days just chilling in the garden enjoying the sun, my 5 year old son's swimming come on leaps and bounds during the week I think he spent half the holiday in the pool ! We took a small paddling pool for our 11 month old son and sat it in the shade for him he also had a great time. In addition under the pool pagoda is a toy chest with bats, balls, water pistols and inflatables. (we left quite a few of our own as well for others to use)
It's worth mentioning Lydia (owner) is fantastic to deal with. Always replying to emails within an hour, nothing was too much trouble and all our needs were catered for, including high chairs, travel cots etc.
Support staff were also excellent, Luca's advice and local knowledge was great, Milva's home cooked meal was fantastic and a real highlight of the holiday, Carlo the gardener does a great job and was always very pleasant despite the language barrier.
All in all great family holiday we would highly recommend, Freeman Family UK
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Alan and I are delighted that you all had such a good holiday. You seem to have come with the intention of sight-seeing but succumbed to the charms of the house, garden and pool more than you expected. A great many of our guests feel the same. We would be very pleased to welcome you all again should you decide to return.
Villa Palareto is a beautiful villa in the gorgeous Umbrian countryside.
Villa Palareto is a wonderful three-bedroom, two-bath villa, with pool and outdoor eating area near the town of Castiglione del Lago. Although the location may seem somewhat remote, it is, in reality, within easy driving distance to many Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns including Cortona, Perugia, Assisi, Montepulciano and Siena, to name just a few. At the villa, you will enjoy sipping a glass of wine poolside listening to the neighboring sheep baa for their dinner, or gazing up into the clear, star-filled sky late at night.
The villa is equipped with everything you need to be quite comfortable, and for cooking meals or grilling outside. The pool is a wonderful asset, especially as we were there during a very hot streak. The downstairs has a little kitchenette, fully equipped, including a wine cabinet which makes hanging by the pool that much easier. The property is lush and well maintained, with flowers blooming everywhere. The owners have thought of many extra details to make your stay comfortable, such as a new clothes washer, hooks in the bathroom, adequate closet space, screens on the windows (sometimes rare in Italy), and other amenities. It is a gorgeous property and we hope to come back again soon for another stay -- hopefully longer this time.
The owners were great to work with, replying promptly to emails and questions. The on-site people who work with them were efficient and helpful.
Our group had a fantastic week at Villa Palareto. It really is a special place.
Truly a great experience at Villa Palareto
Our one week stay at Villa Palareto was a dream come true and the highlight of our extensive trip through Italy. Everything about this beautiful villa was above & beyond our expectations. The property was impeccably maintained and Lydia & Alan couldn’t have been more helpful and attentive to our needs there. After everyday spent scouring the hilltop villages (Tuscany & Umbria) not so far away, it was so nice to come home to the peace and quiet of Palareto. Though we didn’t use the pool (a bit of rain), it looked most inviting and exploring the garden with all the fruits still on the vine, so enchanting. BTW, the meal that Milva brought was “outstanding”, and provided us actually two nights of dinner and then some. And, what a delightful experience it was meeting her. We never saw the owl, but the cats welcomed us home everyday. We surely will spread the word here in the U.S.-“If you’re looking for that perfect Italian countryside Villa, Palareto is the one!” We thank you again, Lydia & Alan, for helping us create the most lasting Italian memories…Rich & Janet, Charles & Nancy
Thank you so much, Janet, Rich, Nancy and Charles. We are delighted that you had such a great time at Palareto. You booked it so long in advance we are pleased that when you actually arrived the house, garden and pool exceeded your expectations. We always try to give guests the best holiday we can and it seems that this time we managed it, despite the indifferent weather (over which we have no control!). We do hope you will come back some time soon.
This is a very established villa. The support staff are wonderfully reliable, and do their very best to make the stay as good as possible. It is perfect place to use as a base for many Tuscan and Umbrian adventures.
Thank you so much for your kind review. As you know, we are not resident in Italy and rely on our local network of people there to ensure a pleasant holiday. We are glad that they did their best to look after you.
GPS Co-ordinates: 43.134070, 11.999923 The famous Tuscan walled town of Cortona is visible from the house and only 20 minutes away by car. Famously written about by Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona is one of the Etruscan jewels of Tuscany. The house is close to Lake Trasimeno (the largest lake in the 'leg' of Italy), near to Castiglione del Lago, a fabulous picturesque medieval walled town. Easy access by train to Florence and Rome. One hour by car from Siena (famous for its palio) and Assisi (the site of the tomb of Saint Francis (the patron saint of Italy).
