|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
This splendid old villa with its large pool and beautiful garden is ideal for both sight seeing and also a relaxing holiday. It is situated close to the walled towns of Cortona and, overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago. It is located centrally between Florence and Rome, and Siena and Perugia/Assisi.
The main accommodation is upstairs where the rooms are large and airy as a consequence of the incredibly high ceilings. A pleasant breeze cools the bedrooms as the house is on a slight hill. The floors are all terracotta or terrazzo tiles and keep the house cool. There is a large very well equipped kitchen/dining room upstairs as well as a sitting room. There is a high quality Clavinova piano in the sitting room.
Downstairs there is a very comfortable large garden room with three sets of French doors looking out over the garden and pool. It has wicker sofas and chairs, a dining table and chairs and a small kitchenette. There is a downstairs shower room for use after your dip in the pool.
Because we know you will want lots of cold drinks, there is a drinks cooler for your wine, beer and soft drinks as well as a large fridge/freezer. In fact everything you might need to spend a relaxing time by the pool or in the garden without having to go upstairs. Because the bathrooms have showers, we provide a baby bath, and there is also a safety gate which can be fitted to the top of the stairs. There are also 2 high chairs and 2 cots. WiFi is available not only in the house but also by the pool. There are numerous interesting outbuildings: a block of three pig styes (no longer in use as such), a huge bread oven which at one time was used by the whole village to bake their bread and pies once a week, a picturesque well, two hay barns which are now used as garages, and finally a tobacco drying tower which was erected when tobacco was still grown in this area. There is also lots of parking space.
We are a retired couple who bought this villa when our children were teenagers. It is truly our second home, not something we bought to let. As well as renting the villa, we have all been coming here for holidays together and separately for 24 years and now we are delighted that our little grandchildren also look on it as a second home.
Alan and Lydia Woolley purchased this villa in 1992
We bought this villa because although it is in a rural setting there are many amenities close by. We can walk to the village and go to the bar and the little very well-stocked supermarket. Our nearest town of Castiglione del Lago is only 4km away. It has spectacular ramparts overlooking the lake and in the 16th century was said to be the strongest fortress in Europe. If we want to visit the many wonderful towns and cities close by (Cortona, Siena, Assisi, Perugia, Florence, Rome) the roads and railways make it easy. The lake is beautiful and adds another dimension to the holiday. There is sailing and kitesurfing. There are three islands in the lake which are served by frequent ferries from Castiglione del Lago. There are also several small well kept lakeside beaches where children can play with their buckets and spades and paddle safely.
If you would like a 4 course home-cooked meal delivered to your door, two village ladies will provide it with produce from their farms.
This villa is large and airy. It has enormously high original beamed ceilings and terracotta floors. The large pool is ideal for cooling off in the summer and the shady pergola is a wonderful setting for alfresco lunches and dinners. There are many fruit trees in the garden and depending on which season you visit, you are welcome to pick cherries, apricots, plums, figs, pears and apples. There is also a small vineyard with grapes which ripen in the autumn.
If you happen to be at the house at the beginning of May, there is the unique opportunity to visit the annual kite festival (Coloriamo i Cieli) where people come from all over the world to show off their amazing kites and also hot air balloons.
In this area there are numerous restaurants and bars, many of them with views of the lake.
In July/August there is a jazz festival in local towns and also concerts in the main church in Castiglione often involving foreign choirs as well as the Scuola Cantorum whose home church this is.
Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at your lovely villa Palareto. We had an absolutely wonderful time, especially our young son Ben, who spent all his time in the garden and swimming pool. The villa is an absolute gem and the garden must give you (as it did us) much joy and satisfaction. I cannot express how much we enjoyed the traditional nature of the house, the loving restoration, and the locality of Piana, Castiglione del Lago and the region surrounding. We will be thoroughly recommending Palareto to all our friends both in the UK and Australia as it is an experience which should be enjoyed by all. Many thanks for making our holiday special.
Our one week stay at Villa Palareto was a dream come true and the highlight of our extensive trip through Italy. Everything about this beautiful villa was above & beyond our expectations. The property was impeccably maintained and Lydia & Alan couldn’t have been more helpful and attentive to our needs there. After everyday spent scouring the hilltop villages (Tuscany & Umbria) not so far away, it was so nice to come home to the peace and quiet of Palareto. Though we didn’t use the pool (a bit of rain), it looked most inviting and exploring the garden with all the fruits still on the vine, so enchanting. BTW, the meal that Milva brought was “outstanding”, and provided us actually two nights of dinner and then some. And, what a delightful experience it was meeting her. We never saw the owl, but the cats welcomed us home everyday. We surely will spread the word here in the U.S.-“If you’re looking for that perfect Italian countryside Villa, Palareto is the one!” We thank you again, Lydia & Alan, for helping us create the most lasting Italian memories…Rich & Janet, Charles & Nancy
This is a very established villa. The support staff are wonderfully reliable, and do their very best to make the stay as good as possible. It is perfect place to use as a base for many Tuscan and Umbrian adventures.
We explored less of the region than planned, so it was fortunate that the villa is such a pleasant place to while away the days. The garden is clearly a labour of love, the kids appreciated the enormous pool, and having the downstairs lounge/kitchen as well as lots of space upstairs works very well. Perfect location: very secluded but only half a mile to Piana's supermarket and bar, while Castiglione del Lago has several seriously good restaurants, beachside cafes, and some nice squares and shops.
The owners are very helpful and accommodating. The beautiful villa and surrounding gardens include an excellent sized pool making the facilities perfect for relaxing all day in the sun. Whilst it is about 1 hr and half drive from Pisa airport the villa is well placed for exploring both the Umbrian and Tuscan towns.,
We would definitely consider returning here again as one week was not enough!
Our stay at Villa Palareto was fantastic. Located on the Umbrian/Tuscan borders it is conveniently positioned to explore this wonderful area but is a base you might not want to leave. The gardens and pool area are exceptional. Alan and Lydia maintain their property to the highest standard whilst maintaining its character and integrity. Although "out of the way" a 10-minute drive will find you in nearby Castiglione del Lago, with a good selection of restaurants and also Lago Trasimeno. The villa is very well-equipped and at no point were we left wanting. We will, without a doubt be returning in the near future. Don't hesitate to buy Milva's olive oil!
We have recently enjoyed a fantastic three weeks in Villa Palareto and would thoroughly recommend this as a wonderful location for exploring Umbria/Tuscany, but equally as a relaxing base in its own right. The villa is very well-equipped, with many thoughtful touches to ensure your relaxation. The garden and pool are scrupulously maintained during the week, and the home-cooked meal we ordered from Milva was delicious! Our children have not stopped talking about the pool! The villa is located sufficiently out of the way to enjoy some real peace and quiet, but is still a great base for visiting the many lovely places of interest nearby. We thoroughly recommend this property as an ideal holiday location. The Brady Family, August 2015.

The famous Tuscan walled town of Cortona is visible from the house and only 20 minutes away by car. Famously written about by Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona is one of the Etruscan jewels of Tuscany. The house is close to Lake Trasimeno (the largest lake in the 'leg' of Italy), near to Castiglione del Lago, a fabulous picturesque medieval walled town. Easy access by train to Florence and Rome. One hour by car from Siena (famous for its palio) and Assisi (the site of the tomb of Saint Francis (the patron saint of Italy).
