Newaygo Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, 1 half bath wtih laundry room, sleeps 4-6

Adorable private cottage perched on a small hill overlooking an 'all sports' lake in west/central Michigan. Property is heavily wooded and peaceful.

Primary activities on the property for guests are relaxing, boating, sitting around a firepit, barbequeing, games, and visiting local activities. While children are welcome, the cottage is generally more suitable for adults seeking a relaxing place to 'get away from it all'.

Country-style cottage offers large modern kitchen, dining area with 'office nook', and comfortable living room - all with lake views. During the fall of 2012, the living room was enlarged as well as the outdoor patio to allow more space for relaxing.

Cozy bedrooms offer queen-size beds and and living room offers full-size sofa bed. Central air-conditioning, cable TV, WiFi, complete laundry, and soft-water are extra conveniences. Cottage is fully equiped - kitchen has all major tools - linens are also included.

Sunny patio with picnic table and charcoal grill can be found just outside the living room facing the lake. Gradual steps meander from patio area down to lake front, fire-pit, benches, and dock. Paddle boat, canoe, kayak, and rowboat are included for guests with life-vests. If desired, guests may moor their own small power boat at the dock..

The distance from the cottage to the waterfront is about 90 feet. The water front has a wooden sea-wall, dock, and a sand area (about 12 ft wide) to walk into the water. Water is warm in summer and shallow - about 3-4 feet in depth at end of dock. The lake bottom is solid and shallow for about 8-10 ft out and then there will be some weeds in the water. Very safe for paddling around, floating, and small boats. Water color is greenish brown due to tanins from numerous oak trees. Beyond dock is a no-wake zone to enter into larger lake. Lake is categorized as an 'all sports' lake.

Cottage is convenient to village of Newaygo (about 5 miles) and within 60 minutes of larger-city environments and Lake Michigan beach.

Numerous activities within a 45-60 minute drive include:

Shrine in the Pines - furniture museum with all items made from tree roots. Very unusual and high quality.

Manistee State Forest 200+ miles of forestland with a 92 mile nature trail (walking, biking, etc)

Michigan Adventure Amusement Park (with many water slides, roller coasters, petting zoo, etc.)

Scenic drives

Meijer Gardens and statuary exhibits (nationally recognized)

Lake Michigan beaches in Muskegon

Indian casinos with 90 minutes

Day trips from the cottage include many great activities such as:

Grand Haven waterfront and Coast Guard Festival (nationally recognized - starts end of July). One of the most famous waterfronts in Michigan and charming small town. The official Coast Guard City of the United States.

Muskegon waterfront and 'Timberland Museums & Mansions' (highlighting the history of logging in West Michigan. Several interesting historic 'mansion tours'.

Holland - internationally famous for the Tulip Festival (in May). Area has beautiful beaches, restaurants, destination shopping, an authentic Windmill from the Netherlands, and many other attractions. Dutch museum, historical homes, and upscale downtown shopping.

Saugatuck Village and Venetian Festival (July). Historic Saugatuck harbour with riverboat cruises. Film festival (Venetian) celebrates independent cinema. Village has the feel of a historical New England community with fine dining and excellent shopping.

Traverse City -one of the most beautiful cities in Michigan, famous for Grand Traverse Bay, sailing, skiing, restaurants, and its location next to the Lelanau Penninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes. These areas are well known for the beautiful scenery, beach areas, wine country, and the internationally known Cherry Festival (early July).

Mackinaw Island and the Mackina Bridge. The bridge is the longest in the NA and spans the straights of Machinaw connecting the lower penninsula with the upper. The island is a turn of the century Victorian experience - visitors get they by ferry and no cars are allowed on the island. Horse carriages and bikes are available on the island for rent. A visit to Mackinaw would require about 3-4 hrs (one way) so the day would be long, but very worthwhile.

Local area and support available:: The area is definitely casual . . . local area restaurants offer a country and western feel/music . . . jeans are the most appropriate. Bring comfortable shoes and a sweater/light jacket in summer. Also be prepared for water activities such as fishing, canoeing, and tubing down the Muskegon River (if desired).

Many conveniences within 5 miles including grocery store, pharmacy, and discount stores, and acess to Muskegon River activities. All the basics are available.

There is a hospital within 20 miles.

Importants rules to consider:: This cottage is immaculate. We work very hard to provide a modern, clean, and 'cute' cottage that provides all of the amenities of home, but overlooking a medium/small lake. In order to maintain that level of quality, we must insist on some rules be adherred to. Most of our guests have been outstanding, but occasionally our standards for cleanliness are considerably higher than what some guests are comfortable with. We expect guests to maintain the cottage in excellent condition and be reasonably concerned with cleanliness. We must be honest . . . if maintaining a reasonably clean environment is a burden for you, please find another place to stay. The rules are:

No more than six people may stay overnight.

The cottage must be maintained with light housekeeping. Leaving a messy, dirty cottage behind is not acceptable and result in loss of security deposit. Even 'excessive' cleaning to restore the cottage will result in loss of part or all of the deposit. .

If you use our supplies, replace them. We put them there only to help you get started, not as gifts.

No large parties are permitted. Family gatherings are fine, but please respect the neighbors.

Absolutely no smoking, drug use, or excessive drinking.

Absolutely no damage will be tolerated and will result in loss of security deposit.

About Jerry Komejan

We are a professional couple that also have had a personal cottage on Brooks Lake for 14 years. In fact, we have been visiting this lake for over 30 years as we have had friends there for a long time.

We currently live in Holland, Michigan and have been lifelong West Michigan residents. Our college degrees are from Hope College which is a private liberal arts college in Holland and then we have been working for large corporations based in West Michigan. People who know us describe us as extremely high integrity, very committed doing everything 'right', and being good people to work with. Of course, we are not perfect, but we try to do the very best that we can - in our own lives and in our work with others. It's just very important to us to set high standards.

In addition to our roots here, we have traveled the world extensively for business and pleasure - we have met so many wonderful people everywhere in our travels and at Lilac Cottage.

Jerry Komejan purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Jerry Komejan chose Western Michigan

After visiting this lake for many years, we finally had the opportunity to purchase a home on the lake in 1999. We restored this home over a period of several years. Then, in 2006, when the property next door became available, we decided to purchase it and build Lilac Cottage as a rental.

From the onset, we wanted to provide a unique experience for our guests. We had heard so many 'horror' stories of people renting cottages and being very disappointed when they arrived and actually saw the property. Often, we heard of cottages being so dirty that the first day would be consumed with cleaning it themselves. Also, we heard stories of cottages in poor repair with shoddy furniture, appliances, and not fully equipped.

We decided to provide a very clean cottage with all of the modern amenities . . . a place we would love to stay in ourselves (and we are very picky people). So we built the cottage - well insulated, oak woodwork, cute decor, nice carpet, good furniture, good equipment, extra clean, nice linens, multiple TVs, a small stereo with music, games, etc. There would be no 'roughing it' for our guests. And outside, there would be a nice patio, chairs, a good grill, several small 'fun' boats, etc.

Our efforts paid off. We have repeat guests every year and even our new guests comment on how the cottage is the nicest one they have every rented. We are very proud of that.

So yes, our standards are high. We expect our guests to treat our property kindly - that way, we can continue to provide a very nice experience for our visitors.

What makes this cottage unique

This property has very nice lake views and is a wonderful, relaxing place to just sit on the patio or around a firepit next to the water. This is why we describe the cottage as a 'relaxing get away'. It's a way to be in a casual environment and still have the amenties of a modern and ultra-clean cottage.

For people who want to 'get away from it all', this is a good place to be.

We have tried to provide many amenties that make it possible to just come without hauling a lot of extras along. We provide bikes, small boats, books, music, magazines, towels, etc. etc. The idea is that all you have to bring is yourself and buy your own 'consumables'.

We also take great pride in the initial impression that we always hear from our visitors . . . 'This is so much more than I expected!' That is our goal.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This cottage is phnominal! Everything you need is provided and then more. The condition is immaculate, updated, and much roomier than the pictures show. The owners were very accomodating with a through cottage tour, a lake tour in their pontoon, a welcome meal, and a listing of nearby sites and eateries. We specifically liked the Shrine in the Pines, Croton Dam, and the local resturants. For a quite, peaceful, relaxing get-a-way - this is the place. I would highly recommed it.

Charming, clean and cozy. Back yard perfect for a lakeside getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, furry canine son & I recently joined our in-laws at Lilac Cottage for the 2016 Labor Day weekend and a 4 night happy stay. We were very impressed by the cleanliness of the cozy cottage. As all the reviews state, everything you need is there. But the idyllic shady and private back yard with steps slowly meandering down to the lake, (and your own private beach, fire pit & dock), really make this place a home run! We fished right off the dock (with some great success) and our dog had the time of his life swimming every day in the lake. Thank you so much to the owners for making us feel so welcome as well. Loved our festive Labor Day tour of Brook Lake on the owner's Pontoon with tidbits about the history etc...! Very happy and special memories made at this charming lakeside getaway. There are several options nearby for exploring this beautiful part of Michigan. We particularly enjoyed our lazy river cruise down the Muskegon, and our day trip to Muskegon and the gorgeous, clean "Pere Marquette Beach" (one of only 3 nationally certified clean beaches in Michigan--just beautiful). Also had the best lobster rolls with a pretty harbor view at the Lake House Waterfront Grille in Muskegon.

Thank you Jerry, it was another amazing vacation! The cottage is so well maintained and so well equipped with anything you need. I could never write enough praise for this property. It really feels like my home away from home. The kids were swimming and fishing non-stop, as for me, I love the kayak. See you next year!

Perfect Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable, clean, modern home and the kitchen is stocked with everything you could possibly need. The outside setting was perfect with a patio, fire-pit and lake access. Top it off with use of the kayaks and canoe, and we could not have asked for a better place to stay. This owner really has thought of everything! Although we could have stayed at the house all week and had a great time, we found that the Muskegon River, Lake Michigan and the Sand Dunes were all within a reasonable drive. This was a great vacation!!!

Another wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I are repeat renters at this cottage and it's time to say again how much we love our visits! The cottage and grounds are well-maintained, still look new, and over the years the owners have even managed to improve upon a 5-star accommodation! They provide every kind of amenity we could think of to keep us entertained in all types of weather. They are always welcoming and kind, and we don't just feel that we are renting a cottage; we feel that we are visiting friends!

Wonderful Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

It started with an easy booking process and great communciation. The moment we got in and we're greeted by the owner, we felt very comfortable. The home was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked, having a washer and dryer and soap to use is very nice. The living area very accommodating for the 5 of us. Bedrooms are good size and bathrooms well stocked. The most wonderful part of the stay for us was the outdoor area. The beautiful landscape from the front door to the patio, the wonderful smell of lilacs, the picnic table to relax and drink coffee in the morning and grilling in the evening on the charcoal grill provided are just the beginning. A short walk down the yard to the beautiful lake with access to the canoe and 2 kayaks were such a family hit! We spent many hours on the water. I would recommend this cottage and owner to friends and family. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Notes:
Property is long and narrow - about 50 wide and 300 feet long. Very quiet because it is set back from the road and cottage is well insulated. Most of the property is shady. We provide enough firewood for guests to use the firepit at least two times. More wood can be purchased very affordably. On weekends, there are people around the lake using fireworks. We ask our guests to refrain from using fireworks for safety reasons.
