Great Stay in this Lovely Condo

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay in this condo. It was well equipped and roomy. The owner communicated well with us. The location was fantastic, right on the beach. We really liked that La Buena Vida was just a short walk away. My wife and son had a lot of fun using the free Kayaks. I would recommend this property!

Good value for a beachfront condo

  • 3 of 5

This is a great value for a basic, bare-bones condo right on the beach with a small pool. The condo is as pictured - a small kitchenette-living space suitable for breakfasts and lunches; two bedrooms each with their own bath; and a balcony. The only difference is the sea: when were visited in March it was very windy and the waves filled the bay. You could still swim, but snorkeling was limited.

A few notes: the condo housekeeping is very thorough and we appreciated the fresh towels left daily. When we stayed there were 4 good quality beach towels provided as well. The condo came stocked with paper goods (towels and TP), dishwashing sponges and soap, and dish towels. The coffee machine takes 8-12 cup basket filters (a big thank you to the previous guest who left a supply!).

The kitchenette is minimal, and not suited for serious cooking. It was fine for serving cereal and coffee, and sandwiches for lunch - but not much else. The condo was well-supplied with a 5gallon water jug, but note that the water from the tap is not purified - so not suitable for rinsing food or brushing teeth.

Privacy might also be a concern for some. The balcony has large openings between units. Luckily we had nice neighbors but it is a bit like sitting on beach chairs down below - no way to have privacy in the space. On the interior, the master bedroom opens onto the living space. While there are shutters to block some views into the bedroom the aperture above the shutters cannot be closed off - thus any noise in the living room/kitchen area goes directly into the bedroom (and the room AC unit would have to work overtime to cool the space; note we did not use the AC while there in March). Also - if one forgets to close the shutters, windows in the master bedroom shower mean that anyone in the living room or balcony can see in.

Akumal itself is a nice, modest beachtown -- good snorkeling off the beach near La Buena Vida (good food here too!) and excellent tidal pools to explore, but the rocky beach requires water socks. La Lunita also has good food on the beach (but requires reservations if you want to sit at the beach tables). Yal Ku lagoon is overrated, overpriced and overcrowded: if you've snorkeled before just skip it and head out into Half Moon Bay. Akumal beach, where the turtles reliably come in to feed, is insanely overcrowded after 9am. Get there early and be prepared for swarms of rookie snorkelers.

Awesoem stay

  • 5 of 5

We have visited and stayed in Akumal previously, but really love this place! There was a fantastic view from the ocean! The Air conditioning worked well. I really liked the Daily maid service and the american tv was a bonus. I would definitely stay here again.

Great Half Moon Bay Condo

  • 4 of 5

I'm a little late getting to this, but definitely want to recommend this condo for anyone interested in a stay on Half Moon Bay. It may be the best value on the bay...priced at a one bedroom level for two big bedrooms with huge baths, priced at a no-pool level for a property with a nice pool.

It's clean, comfortable, well-equipped, and has a fabulous view. Most beds in Mexico are a little harder than I prefer, but these were more comfortable than most. We didn't really use the TV, but the Internet connection worked great throughout our stay.

The only issue we had was that hot water lasted for only one shower, but it's a very warm climate and we managed to get cleaned off anyway!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive review. We came down to our condo in April of 2015 and checked out the hot water. Normally we take quick showers, so didn't notice before. I looked at the hot water heater and noticed the temperature was set a little low, so I turned up the temperature. I took a 30 minute shower and gave up on trying to see how long it took before the water got cold. About 15 minutes later my wife took a 10 minute shower which was nice and hot.

Just right for family of 4

  • 4 of 5

We have been to the area several times and snorkeled at Half Moon Bay on a couple of occassions. So, we decided to stay there, this time with our two daughters (17,20). We usually look for functional, but economical and #8 fir the bill. It was very resonably priced, and modestedly furnished. Downsides were trouble with the satellite on the lower channels, and amount of hot water for showers. Nevertheless, the condo is strategically located in the center of the bay with beuatiful 3rd floor views, a small pool, and small sandy area with palapas to lay out. Although it was unusally windy, you can always grab a snorkel and head out to the calmest area of the bay to see coral, fish, even lobster, crab, squid, .... and turtles.

1. Aktun Chen - do the whole thing - cave tour, zipline, and cenote snorkeling. A bit pricy but well worth it.

2. Kal-ku lagoon - - easiest snorkeling ever, but stick to the left and go back to the south end. Lots of rock formations to swim through and fish to see.

3. Tulum ruins - worth it, but crowded. Get there early and go straight to the main entrance. Then, hire a guide who can get you in without waiting in line.

We go to the big supermart in Tulum for supplies, so we can serveral meals for oureselves. But, we do like La Buena Vida and went to Tulum to eat a La Zebra and Zamas (two of our favorites).

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive review. We came down to our condo in April of 2015. Our TV service is Dish network which is american tv (many condos down here don't have american TV) with all the premium channels. They have been moving channels around and added a new satellite recently. We brought down a new HD receiver that allowed us to pick up another satellite and now we get all of the channels again We also checked out the hot water. Normally we take quick showers, so didn't notice before. I looked at the hot water heater and noticed the temperature was set a little low, so I turned up the temperature. I took a 30 minute shower and gave up on trying to see how long it took before the water got cold. About 15 minutes later my wife took a 10 minute shower which was nice and hot.

lol kanaab condo

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 just spent the week in Akumal at this wonderful condo on half moon bay. We couldn't have had a better time. I spent one morning jogging on the beach looking at all the properties lining the beach, and there was not one other that I would've rather stayed at! our condo was clean and beautiful. the kids had their own bathroom, and my husband and I had our own. The maids did all of our dishes everyday and cleaned up after all of our sand and grime from the days on the warm sunny beach. The pool was perfect for the kids, not too deep and not too big. I could relax in my lounge chair in the sand and still watch them in the pool. We hope to come back next year. The beach out front was great for walking and snorkeling and close proximity to both the lagoon and to the main akumal beach. we loved it!

Akumal is for people who want to get away from the busy tourist resorts of Cancun and Cozumel and for those who want to see more of the real Mexican lifestyle of the Mayan Riviera. Akumal, located very close to Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, is a small quaint resort on the tourist corridor between Cancun - Tulum of the Mexican Caribbean, also called The Maya Riviera. It is located 65 miles south of Cancun, 52 miles south of the airport, and 14 miles north of Tulum. Akumal is a excellent destination for those interested in enjoying the Mexican Caribbean, located in the Yucatan Peninsula on the shores of the Caribbean Sea . Akumal is located near the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Xel-ha, Xcaret, Chichen-Itza and Coba. There is a crescent shaped beach called Half Moon Bay that is perfect for basking the sun. Akumal Bay is where sea turtles come to lay their eggs in the summer months...the bay also offers excellent snorkeling along coral reefs in the crystal clear Caribbean waters.
