Overview

Grand Marais Cabin Rental Photos and Description

In the middle of most of the U.P. Attractions, Great for Hunting/fishing/Relaxin

*Wake up to the sound of Whippoorwills in this secluded U.P. log cabin tucked away from absolutely everyone on a trophy size 'brook trout' lake with small mouth bass, and perch!!

Come here for the best get-a-way the U.P. has to offer with an incredible price! About 1.5 hours from ‘da big Mac Bridge connecting Michigan's 2 Peninsulas. ...........

People tell us that we don't describe this cabin well enough. So here is our best: 'SOLITUDE ROCKS!! Hear what silence really sounds like. Read our reviews!

No people, no regrets, just perfect solitude! This cabin is the only place on the lake and for miles around!( there is a small hut nearby but rarely does anyone come there, and sometimes people may fish the lake or drive ATV's by) Sit on the sandy beach all by yourself and listen to the loons or watch the brookies jump for a fly with a backdrop of a blazing sunset. Put out the camp fire and crawl into bed with fresh, pure cotton sheets... Imagine...no one's going to bug you, no phone calls, no hassles.... all day long.

You could just push the row boat or canoe into the water and try your luck at our trophy size brook trout, (hard to catch) oversized small mouth bass (super fun to catch) or delicious perch (easy to catch).

Maybe spend a day in Grand Marais and fish the pier for lake trout or just go play on the shoreline of Lake Superior and hunt for pretty stones & agates. Don't forget to try some specialty beers and great food while you are in town and go shopping in their little shops.

You could drive into Seney for a burger but you decide to enjoy your own on the grill, inside the screened-in porch sitting in a rocking chair over looking the lake with your nose in a good book.. It is your choice. It is time to drop everything and get away from it all.

With fabulous sunsets around a bonfire, you can watch deer swim near and hear the night sounds under the starry sky!

The cabin is centered within easy driving distance to most U.P. tourist attractions including Pictured Rocks, many water falls, Mackinac Island, Soo Locks, Seney Wildlife Preserve, White Fish Point, the Two-Hearted River, and numerous Light-Houses, etc...

3 bedrooms, sleeps 6 comfortably. Large mosquito-free screened porch, sandy beach, clear spring-fed lake great for swimming. There is a row boat and canoe on site with life jackets. It is the only habited cabin on the lake, and for miles with nothing but trails, trails and more trails leading all over the Upper Peninsula.

The famous Seney national Wildlife Refuge (20 minutes) is a great place to spend a day hiking, canoeing, and animal watching. ATV rentals are in Seney if you are seeking adventure and exploration on all the trails surrounding the cabin. Grand Marais with it's speciality restaurants, is 30 minutes away with Lake Superior shoreline awaiting the agate rock hounds, sun-bathers, and boaters.

This is a vacation designation for families, honeymooners, couples, fishermen, hunters, lady retreats, or just about anyone wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The six mile long drivable trail to this cabin can be confusing at night, so please plan on coming in the daytime and enjoy the wilderness scenery on your way in.

The cabin is generator ran but feels like a normal house with electricity. All modern appliances for your convenience. With many returning guests, your vacation promises to be one of the U P's Best. Clean & Affordable.

* Wild Blueberries near this cabin- July-August - September (Pick in morning for pancakes.)

Perfect get away

  • 5 of 5

Awesome getaway tucked way back in the woods.

The cabin was nice and comfortable, the view was beyond breathtaking.

Pros of this cabin....

The inside was very well taken care of, clean organized and very relaxing feel.

The lake (Dutch fred lake) is a very good view of the sun setting and riseing.

The fishing was average,

a lot of 5-7" perch, bluegill, and had a very nice size bass that shook the hook.

They offer a rowboat and a canoe witch are perfect for this little lake....

There is a little lake near the cabin that my wife was catching brown trout out off... About a 15 minute ride from the cabin...

There is also the fox river to the east of the cabin where fishing was alright....

The road wasn't that bad never had to use 4x4 or worried about messing up my truck...

There is a lot of attractions with in a hour ride from this cabin.

Overall a very nice vacation for me and my wife....

I would definitely recommend this cabin to anyone looking for privacy..

If you are looking for a up north experience this is the cabin for you...

Thank you Dale and Mike for the opportunity to enjoy your cabin, we will definitely be back....

Great place for our fishing trip

  • 5 of 5

Went on a fishing trip with some friends and decided on this as our base camp. Dale was very helpful answering questions and offered good advice for our stay. The road in is a little rough but I would think manageable for most vehicles, I wouldn't recommend a very low clearance car though, but we had no issues getting to the lake. We found the cabin very clean and with more kitchenware than expected. Its quite nice inside but still keeps that cabin feel. The screened in porch was great and provided the perfect place to hang out and grill during a thunderstorm. Mosquito and black flies were out but I think the breeze off the lake helps keep them in control near the cabin. Take bug spray though especially if venturing out on a hike. The lake provided decent fishing, many small perch but the small mouth were plentiful and of good size. We caught about 20 legal sized bass the first night but only kept a few for a meal. Couldn't pull a trout out of there though. Would be a great lake for the the casual angler and children. However, we found excellent fishing nearby that would satisfy a more discerning fisherman. We caught dozens of brook trout a ways away including one 17"!! (this was the highlight of the trip for me). This cabin made a great place for venturing out to those hard to reach fishing spots. We brought 6 atvs with us one for each of us. This proved to be an excellent choice as lots of the additional beauty and fishing spots in the area are hard to reach by car. If you have them definitely take them. Id also recommend a chainsaw or axe as a means to gather firewood and it would be useful in the event a tree falls over the access road. The cabin is very private, we only saw one other person for the 5 days we were there and he was very friendly and offered lots of good local advice on the area. If you are coming with more than 3 or 4 people bring a cooler, the fridge is adequate but not big. Everyone said they slept well on the beds as did I. We saw loons, deer, several grouse and a king fisher during our stay. Beach was pretty nice too, mostly sandy and water was warm enough for a swim. Everyone had a great time and we will be returning some day. I think this cabin would serve people looking for a quiet getaway or an adventure seeker equally as well. It could of not served us any better. The 5 days we were there I feel like we barely scratched the surface of what the area has to offer. Thanks again to Dale for the great memories!

Sleeping with Mice

  • 1 of 5

Stayed August 2014. Cabin is just how it looks in pictures, well-stocked and secluded, but there is a mouse problem. Owners disclosed just a few weeks before our trip (MONTHS after full payment) that tenants have to put trash out every night, sweep, and keep food in cupboards. We were led to believe that as long as we picked up our food and cleaned, we would not have an issue. We have backpacked in bear country out west and understand that even toothpaste needs to be in sealed containers to limit odors. We were meticulous and in fact rarely ate there, but it wasn’t enough. There were mouse droppings in all rooms, on floors where my kids wanted to play, on rugs (which can never be adequately laundered), under beds, on shelf under microwave, and even on kitchen counters. We had the benefit of finding a dead mouse on arrival, hearing mice climbing on the bed frame at night, and feeling one crawl over my foot in bed to make it clear that the specks of "dirt" were, in fact, mouse feces. We spent most of our “relaxing” vacation cleaning. Worst part is that it is a known issue, but adequate measures are not taken to seal all points of entry to keep mice out. Traps at two corners outside are not enough. Contacted the health department, but they do nothing unless there are multiple complaints. Cleaning person was blamed, but earlier I was told that the cleaning person was fired weeks before we got there and the owner was coming every weekend to clean. Mouse droppings and urine can carry nasty viruses and the CDC outlines particular guidelines for cleaning, but this cannot be followed if renters are not made aware of the issue, provided with the appropriate cleaning supplies and protective gear, and advised in proper clean-up. In fact, we were told to "sweep" up in direct disagreement with the CDC due to the threat of aerosolization of urine/feces.  Owners AND renters also cannot clean linens by recommended procedures due to a plumbing issue (sign on the washing machine stated that only cold water could be used.)  We ended up leaving early, and it truly was the worst vacation on record for my lifetime. In right conscience, I cannot turn a blind eye and let others walk unknowingly into the situation my family dealt with, especially after saving up and waiting all year for this. I will never do another owner rental, where there is no recourse for situations like this, no consumer protection.

Owner's Response: Dear Suburban life, When we interview potential guests, we stress that our cabin IS in the wilderness. We promote our U.P. Wilderness Cabin as an adventure away from the city noise and lights. It is a place of nature's beauty & solitude, with a cozy, clean cabin, which is much better & safer than a tent in the back country. Outside, in addition to field mice, we have raccoons, skunks, wolves, moose, deer, ducks, squirrels, coyotes, bear, and many more species. They all “poop” outside and even on the beach where your children play and swim. It is a natural thing. When interviewing you for our cabin experience I was hoping you had realized that. After your departure we stayed the rest of the week at our cabin. We set a lot traps each night, and caught only one mouse. We have always followed U.P. professional exterminators guidelines and even they say that short of getting a cabin kitty, it's never going to be 100%. We also go far above any “paid housekeeper” with cleaning, and had recently let her go because the generator was nearly out of oil, the traps were not filled with poison, and the cleaning was not properly done to our expectations. Each week, my husband and I travel one way 4.5 hours, to the cabin to thoroughly clean it before the next guests arrive. We dust the surfaces with Clorox wipes, vacuum the furniture and beat the rugs over the outside rail. We refill all the poison traps placed at each corner of the cabin. We also bring fresh, sanitized 100% cotton linens from home, using hot water and bleach to kill any germs that others may have left, just like at a hotel. We also leave our guests with all the cleaning agents necessary to sanitize and clean up after themselves. In the wilderness, mice can happen. If prospective renters are reading this, rest assured that we do our best to control mice wanting to come into the cabin. Our cabin is cleaned with care and pride. The Great U.P. outdoors and our cabin setting is well worth the inconvenience of a mouse in the house. It is a beautiful PURE U.P. MICHIGAN experience! God Bless those who read this and smile! ><>)))*

Perfect Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon in October. It was perfect. The cabin was fully stocked and everything was very clean and nice, especially the kitchen. Dale was very helpful with the few issues we had and was quick to answer a call or text.

We took the boat out on the lake and went sight seeing all around the UP. It is a beautiful area. We both hope to be able to come back and stay in this cabin again.

just what I needed!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted peace and quiet and the cabin on Dutch Fred fit the bill perfectly! It was secluded so you must be ready for that but if that's what you're looking for this is the right place! Stunning is what I'd call the surroundings, a little bit of paradise! The lake is beautiful and clear! The cabin is very well stocked, anything you could possibly need was there. Dale and Mike have put alot of thought and LOVE into the cabin to ensure renters have a great time when they're there! You will too if you want to see the stars at night and hear the wind in the trees and if fresh air and a beautiful view with your morning coffee are for you then you should definitely stay a week on Dutch Fred. Thank you for being such great hosts too. Hope to return someday soon.
