Juniper Cottage shares with our home and Hawthorn Cottage two lovely acres in Somesville, a historic village at the heart of Acadia National Park. It is just a short walk to the library, repertory theater, church, museum, and convenience store. Both ocean and lake are within walking distance also. The view from our property is of Cadillac Mountain., across thoughtfully landscaped lawns and gardens. Juniper's screened porch and gas fireplace make it a charming home away in any season.

About Marilee

Ken is a retired art educator and I am a costume designer. We purchased this property from Chauncey and Ethel Somes in 1980 and continue their tradition (since 1960) of sharing this glorious island and our charming cottages with summer guests.

Marilee purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Marilee chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

Staying in Somesville means that Acadia National Park is surrounding you in all directions, and our cottages for two provide you with artful, well-appointed accommodations for peaceful, interesting vacations. We have lovely grounds, with walking paths through the historic cemetery, along the mill brook from Somes Pond, down to the ocean.

What makes this cottage unique

Perhaps the biggest plus is the central location of our village. The three larger towns of the island, Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Southwest Harbor are equidistant from here, making island exploration so much more convenient. And it is a short walk from our property to where you can pick up the free Island Explorer shuttles if you don't feel like driving.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I just returned from another very pleasant stay at Juniper; it was my 4th or 5th time there. Everything was as usual: comfortable, clean, cheerful, and very well equipped. I come to Mount Desert Island to go hiking and biking in Acadia; it is lovely to come back to such a cozy place after a busy day. I especially enjoy relaxing and reading on the screened-in porch. Thanks again, Marilee and Ken, for providing such a good place to stay. ( And thanks this time for lending me that amazing book to read!)

Somesville is virtually surrounded by Acadia National Park. The village itself is right on Somes Sound, the natural fjord that comes up to the center of the island. You can walk to the Somesville Landing from our property and sit by the ocean and watch the boats coming into the harbor as well as the abundant wildlife, including bald eagles and busy ospreys. We have an outstanding repertory theater in the village, and the island in general is alive all season with music, art, lobster festivals, Acadia National Park events, and endless fresh and saltwater activities: schooner excursions, whale watches, kayaking tours, canoe rentals, and miles of hiking trails.

Quiet peaceful cottage.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for my wife and I to celebrate our 20year anniversary. We are avid cyclists and love to bike. The cottage is in a great spot. We were so close to all the trails and Acadia national park. The owner was very nice and the cottage had everything we needed. We are looking forward to staying there again.

Owner's Response: Being in Somesville has always been very special for us, too. We agree that the central location on the island makes a big difference. So glad you've had a happy anniversary with your first visit to Acadia.

Juniper cottage is a unique Home Away

  • 5 of 5

We spent a happy, comfortable week in Juniper, enjoying its comforts, the thoughtful furnishings, the art work, the books, the park-like setting. Ken and Marilee are wonderful hosts who live on site and seem to have anticipated every want or need. Somesville is centrally located on the island which makes it convenient to explore all the sites. We heartily recommend Juniper Cottage and thank Ken and Marilee for their warm hospitality. The next time we travel to Maine from Alaska, we would certainly stay here..

Owner's Response: It means so much to us when our creative efforts are appreciated and enjoyed. We continue to explore new trails and find special places to share, even as we approach winter. Thanks to our furthest-west guests for such an enthusiastic response. We so look forward to another visit some day.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely happy with every aspect of Juniper Cottage. It's central location was the perfect jumping off point for any activity on the island. Clean, quiet, well equipped and peaceful made our stay very relaxing. We enjoyed the short walk to Somesville and saw 1 or 2 bald eagles each time we went. Marilee and Ken made us feel welcome with the small touches in the cottage and tips for activities and places to visit on the island. We highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a perfect Maine getaway and are looking forward to a return visit!

Perfect little house!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I continue to come back here year after year. This cottage is a perfect little house to stay in and we were quite comfortable for our two week stay. Everything is well thought out, from the decor, to the fresh flowers in each room, to the information provided on all there is to do in the area. We had access to beach cahirs and a grill also. The screened-in front porch is the perfect spot for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. We used it a lot! There is also a gas "wood" stove which makes things really cozy on a cool mMaine night. It's only a ten minute ride to Bar Harbor or tho the beach. Acadia National Park is fabulous and that is a quick ride too! We love Juniper and we will keep this as an annual trip as long as we can!

We love Juniper Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We first stayed in Juniper Cottage in 2008. We're returning to Maine in 2010 and never considered staying anywhere else. The cottage is very convenient to park and island natural attractions and it's close to where you'd get on and off the island. The cottage is clean and the owners are very good at communicating with customers. We'd eagerly stay there again.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

Lovely property. Very comfortable and beautifully decorated. Spotlessly clean. Centrally located to everything. Owner offered suggestions for places to go and where to eat. Burning Tree Restaurant was perfect for our date night. Kayaking was a good workout for city folks. Hiking trails for every level of hiker. Sightseeing boat tours. It was a perfect vacation at a perfect cottage.
