Lake Leelanau Waterfront Cottage with Mini Harbor - Close to Traverse City!

Bedrooms 2
Space 505 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bedrooms, full size futon in living room, 1bath/stand up shower, sleeps 6

West Winds Resort is truly a slice of heaven in Northern Michigan! Located on beautiful Lake Leelanau, 11 darling cottages share 400 ft. of shoreline, along with a mini-harbor, sandy beach, fire pits and a playground. The entire property is meticulously maintained, quiet and serene. Pull up in front of Cottage #2 (look for the cheerful white shutters!) and you'll find a cozy respite, perfect for a family or a couple looking for a romantic Northern Michigan escape.

Cottage #2 features two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with bunk beds (a double bed on the bottom and twin bed on top). There is a full-size futon sleeper in the living room, so the cottage can accommodate up to 6, but it is most comfortable with a max of 4 adults and 2 children (or 2 adults and 4 children). The single bathroom has a shower stall, single sink and toilet. GUESTS MUST SUPPLY THEIR OWN SHEETS AND TOWELS, as well as paper products.

Brew your morning coffee in the cozy kitchen while you look over the calm morning lake. Step onto the patio where you'll find a picnic table and gas grill awaiting your first cookout. You're literally steps from the beach where you can enjoy an evening glass of wine while you watch the sun set over the lake. Be sure to bring along marshmallows and graham crackers for s'mores around the fire pit after dinner! Our mini-harbor was reconstructed in 2015 with a wider opening and seawall, and each cottage is assigned its own slip. Perfect to take advantage of the amazing fishing on Lake Leelanau!

While West Wind Resort is the perfect spot for a summer vacation, it's also a fantastic getaway destination in the off season. Come in the fall to enjoy the spectacular show of autumn color, local farm stands and scenic drives. And in the winter, this 4-season cottage is a cozy destination after a day of skiing or snowshoeing. It's also a great base camp for hunters and fisherman, year 'round.

Traverse City's area wineries, microbreweries and farm-to-table dining options are also available throughout the year. The Leelanau Peninsula alone boasts some 30+ wineries and tasting rooms, while the Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula continue to add to their number each year. You will be amazed by not only the quality of the wine, but the jaw-dropping views of East and West Grand Traverse Bay that many of the wineries provide. For those outdoor recreation enthusiasts, the region is chock full of hiking and biking trails, as well as nearly endless opportunities for kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. The nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a true "bucket list" experience that you and your family will cherish as a lifelong memory.

We know how precious vacation time is, and we hope that you choose to spend it with us. You won't be disappointed!

Planning a family reunion or just have a big group heading north? In addition to Cottage #2, we own Cottage #1 -- same size, right next door! And we have recently purchased a beautiful 3rd cottage that is considerably larger with 3 BRs, a larger bathroom, dining room and fireplace. All three cottages are winterized and available throughout the year. Send us an email for more information!

Perfect for a weekend getaway

  • 4 of 5

This little cottage is getaway perfection. My friend and I rented it for our annual girl's getaway weekend and were instantly enchanted and planning our next joint family vacation! The cabin is clean and simple and bright, with a perfect beachy/up-north feel. There are brochures and fliers out with numerous restaurant and shopping suggestions, but if you're more interested in cooking right there, there is a fully-equipped kitchen, grill on the patio, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the adirondack chairs by the water and watching the sun go down. The only downside was that the furnace was not working (and the temp was supposed to go down to the 30's that night), but the owners addressed it right away and it was repaired the next day. Definitely would love to stay there again!

The only think i would have liked is if the main window had a shad. It was great and we would stay there again.

About Mary Winowiecki

We are both natives of Northern Michigan -- Joe growing up in Leelanau County and Mary in Traverse City. We moved away from the area for about 20 years after high school, but moved back "home" in 2000 to raise our two children, Emma and Mitch. (There's no where better to raise a family!).

While the area has changed and grown in the past several decades, we love that it still retains what makes Northern Michigan so special -- pristine beaches, endless hiking and biking trails, and views that continue to take our breath away on a daily basis. We wouldn't live anywhere else!

Mary Winowiecki purchased this cottage in 2016

Why Mary Winowiecki chose Traverse City

We were immediately impressed by West Winds Resort! First of all, it is situated on our favorite part of Lake Leelanau (the sunset side!). Secondly, the string of 11 cottages are so sweet! Each has shutters unique to their cottage and all are meticulously maintained, as is the entire property. We were struck by how quiet and private the resort felt -- the perfect spot to get away from it all!

What makes this cottage unique

The cottages sit well off the road with a large grassy area complete with a great play structure and basketball hoop. There is also room to part boat trailers. The beach is great and adjoins a mini-marina (each cottage is allotted one slip). A gazebo and two fire pits add to the charm, as does a small fish-cleaning station.

Ask any local and they'll tell you Lake Leelanau is one of their favorite inland lakes -- perfect for swimming, boating, paddle boarding and fishing. Visit nearby Grand Traverse Bay to take a catamaran ride, sail on a majestic Tall Ship, rent a jet ski or go parasailing. Or venture out onto The Big Lake (Lake Michigan) to go charter fishing or simply to meander along the shore keeping an eye out for Petoskey stones.

Take a drive out to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and don't miss the scenic Pierce Stocking Drive with outstanding views of Lake Michigan (scenic turnout #9 is amazing!). Hike, bike or snowshoe many of the park's trails (don't miss the new Heritage Trail!) or take the kids to the 110 foot Dune climb.

Did you know that Bon Appetit has named Traverse City one of the country's Top Foodie Towns? Eateries range from family friendly food trucks (check out The Little Fleet in downtown TC) and burger joints (Slab Town on West Front Street or Don's Drive-In on Munson) to eclectic cuisine like the Asian/Cuban fusion restaurant Georgina's. Celebrating a special day? Fine dining at PepeNero at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons is not to be missed. And local favorite Amical offers impeccable food, service and ambiance in downtown TC.

For the shoppers in the crowd, Downtown Traverse City boasts dozens of boutiques and specialty shops, and the nearby port towns of Suttons Bay, Leland, and Glen Arbor are ripe with shops, art galleries and eateries.

The summer season in our area is buzzing with festivals, ranging from the family-friendly National Cherry Festival to the highly acclaimed Traverse City Film Festival. Art festivals featuring the area's plethora of local artists can be found almost every weekend of the summer season, and wine and beer festivals are sprinkled throughout the year -- even in the winter months!

Golfers will enjoy some two dozen area courses, many with breathtaking views and designed by the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus, Weiskopf and Player. The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms and Manitou Passage are two of the best -- and most beautiful -- in Northern Michigan.

We recommend checking out prior to your visit. It's a great resource for the latest in event information and area attractions!
