The moment you step from your terrace you are in the sand, surrounded by Coconut Palms and Almendro Trees, just steps from the waters edge. The beach in front of the house has a flat sand bottom, without a doubt the best section of beach in Playa Grande, great for swimming, great for kids and lots of shade.
Whether inside or out on the beach you will see perfect waves breaking a short distance to the left and right of the house where you will usually see some of the best surfers in Costa Rica enjoying our pristine waves.
We rent boogie boards and beginner surf boards which are covered with thick protective foam and have soft flexible rubberized fins for maximum safety, very beginner friendly. We offer free surf lessons. Great fun for everyone.
Just a 15 minute stroll down the beach is Playa Carbon, one of Costa Rica’s rare black sand beaches. On the way you will see a giant 50 foot rock that sits in the water close to shore just a short distance to the right of the house where you can play in the rock tide pools which are filled with many shells and small marine life. Good shoreline fishing at the rock.
Playa Grande is one of the few beaches in the world where Giant Leather Back Turtles weighing up to 1,800 pounds and up to 9 feet long come at night to nest and lay their eggs. Many nights these amazing prehistoric animals nest directly in front of our homes. (A Must See).
We highly recommended you to experience Local Bull Riding at the local Fiestas (Typical Parties). You will see bull riding like you have never seen before. It's like going back to the Old West, but Costa Rican Style. There are a wide variety of activities and day trips available in our region. We can help you arrange.
Private guided day trips to one of our favorite rivers to see Crocodiles, Macaw, Parrots, and a variety of Exotic Birds, Giant Iguanas, White Face, and Howler Monkeys and many other animals. The trip ends with a typical Costa Rican Lunch (Excellent Food). On your trip back, you will stop in the small town of Guaitil,
famous for handmade pottery, fired on site in a Tico Style clay wood burning ovens.
Playa Grande is conveniently located between the towns of Tamarindo and Flamingo. Tamarindo is just 20 minutes to the South by car or a 35 minute beach walk to the river mouth that separates us from Tamarindo. For about one dollar, a boat taxi will take you across the river.

This was our third year in a row staying at one of Greg and Gabriela's beautiful homes. We have already reserved a stay for next year. The home is beautiful, location could not be better. They helped us rent a car and saw to our every need. We had massages right on our front porch, the best.
This location is safe, Nicho and Miriam saw to our every need. No complaints whatsoever, only the highest praises for Casa Sylmar and Playa Grande.
OK, get your "bucket list" out and put this at the top: "Casa Sylmar, Playa Grande" :: Paradise Found! :: Circle up as long a stay as you can manage because it simply goes from better to best :: Our one piddly week the Ides of February 2016 was not near long enough (we booked Winter 2017 while there) ::
Now improve on this if you can: You are ON the world's cleanest white-sand beach (no trash, no kelp, no campers, no seaweed, no dune buggies), with only palm trees between your terrace and gently sloping beach to the constant, soothing surf that is of a perfect temperature ::
Here are some significant NOs: no rain, no bugs, no humidity, no anxiety, no hassle, no stress, no sense of time ( it is either night with more stars than you ever thought you could view [get the free Astronomy app for your phone] or it is day with beautiful weather, ideal temperature, and comforting on-shore breeze), no people (there are only about seven homes on the entire Playa) :: There are some surfers a couple hundred yards to your left near a good taco shack, and Rip Jack Restaurant is another hundred yards thataway but set back from the beach itself :: Rip Jack has delicious dishes from a menu that is varied and inventive; breakfast, lunch, and dinner :: I mean, really, you're not here to do a lot of prepping, cooking, and clean-up; you are on VA-CA-SHUN -- get away from the drudge ::
I won't spend a lot of verbiage on the interior -- it is all as it should be; sumptuous, good spacious design, terrific structure, airy, lovely details, very nicely appointed, daily maid service, privacy, total security, etc :: Other reviews provide more detail but you won't be inside much anyway except to freshen your drink :: Do please read the other reviews and note that they all award Casa Sylmar a 5-Star ranking, and deservedly so ::
One hour from Liberia airport and indeed it is Toes in Sand with Drink in Hand, awaiting that glorious, awe inducing sunset ::
This was our 2nd time staying here and it did not disappoint!! The home is outstanding, location on the beach (which very few homes are) is by far the best way to spend a week in Costa Rica!! It was the hottest week we have ever experienced, but the covered patio with ceiling fans and ocean breezes kept us very comfortable!! The owners and staff are incredible, as much or as little service as you want. They couldn't have been nicer to us!! They are available 24/7 as we found out when I messed up the safe, they were there in 10 minutes to get it open!!
We have been to Costa Rica many times and we would definitely stay here again and again!!
Thank you so much for another wonderful trip!!
This is the best vacation property that we have stayed at. Not only are the accommodations luxurious and extremely well kept, the home managers are always available and do everything they can to please. The location of this home is perfect, actually fronting on the beach so that the moment you leave the property you are on the sand of the beach. The staff put out beach loungers on the beach every morning which are yours to use, and will bring out the BBQ whenever you need to use it. We were more than happy with Greg (owner) and his local staff, we were impressed. We are also impressed with the quality and comfort of this home. We will definitely be back.
This was, hands down, the best vacation our family has ever gone on. We traveled with 3 young children and this house and Playa Grande beach was absolutely perfect. Greg (the owner) and his family were absolutely amazing to us. They were extremely communicative, and they made certain everything went smoothly for us. For example, our kids wanted to boogie board and they had our boogie boards rented and ready for us the first morning after we arrived. They helped us sign up for phenomenal activities with our children (crocodile river tour, ATV tour, zip lining, and horse back riding).
I am looking forward to heading back to Costa Rica and I will definitely rent this house from Greg and Gabriella again if it's available.
We just returned from a wonderful and relaxing vacation at the beautiful Playa Grande. The location of the home was fantastic with nice trees on the beach in front of the home to provide shade, but not block the fabulous views! The shady areas did crowd up during the days, but it was the week between Christmas and New Years, so likely more crowded than normal. The beach itself is pretty expansive in that area, so although people were packed in the shade, overall it wasn't really "crowded". And besides, with Nicho setting out our beach chairs in the morning, we were always assured to have a perfect spot.
Miriam and Nicho, and their family, did a fantastic job providing us with cleaning services (including some laundry) and security (with which we had no issues). In spite of the language barrier (we basically speak no Spanish), they managed to inform us about fish delivery as well as the bread truck, got us a gas grill to use when requested, and quickly replaced some light bulbs that had burned out.
We walked to dinner one night, cooked a couple of meals at home, and had just short drives to local restaurants the remaining nights (2 nights at El Huerto...great pizza). The little Taco Star stand on the beach had good tacos and fruit (and drinks/beer) for lunch, and was only a few minutes walk down the beach. We went to Tamarindo one day and we were very happy that we hadn't chosen a place to stay there. Too busy/crowded/touristy there for our liking. We much preferred the laid back vibe of Playa Grande.
Greg (the owner) was fabulous from the day we inquired about the place until after we returned and he made a follow-up call to assure everything was up to our expectations (it was). Gabriella (greg's wife) helped us arrange our rental car, and Daniella (their daughter) efficiently arranged our excursions and even sent reminder emails to be the day before each one. My family (3 sons, ages 16,18, and 20) highly recommends the one day adventure tour. Lots of fun and a great value for the price. The sunset sailing excursion through Antares Sailing was a lovely trip as well. Snorkeling wasn't fantastic compared to Hawaii or the Carribbean, but we managed to see a few interesting things (eel, puffer fish). The only excursion that didn't quite live up to our hopes was the crocodile tour. We had recently done an airboat tour in the Everglades that was far better.
We would all love to come back someday, and have already recommended it to friends!
