If ever four walls could hold a free spirit, it’s Norburn Street – this Ladbroke Grove home is delightfully different and doesn’t mind who knows it. From the stunning artwork to the standout colours and the tree that sprouts in the sitting room, you won’t be short on surprises. Think far-flung rugs and carved Asian cupboards, laughing Buddhas and smiling Ganeshas – and we won’t be a bit surprised if you can’t choose between the pull of the patio and the allure of the roof terrace. Just be sure to decide which of Notting Hill’s slick boutiques and bustling markets best takes your fancy.

Free running

Your hosts may have only just moved in, but already their home is full of character. A hip, young and funky brood, they spend half the year in Ibiza, the other half in Ladbroke Grove.

Breaking ground

You’ve three chunky sofas from which to admire the sitting room’s eclectic energy, bold artworks and exotic textures. Sit down to tea at the brightly topped dining table, but not before you’ve savoured the kitchen’s clean lines and cool brown tiles. You’ve a sweet whitewashed patio beyond its glass doors, as well as an Astroturfed roof terrace ideal for picnics and people-watching alike.

And having seen the master bedroom’s four-poster, the double’s antiques and the staircase’s dazzling skylights, do look in on the bathrooms. Every basin in this home breaks the mould.

Notting Hill’s rebellious, bohemian younger cousin, Ladbroke Grove runs south of the Hill, before you hit Kensal Green. Partly gentrified, partly untouched, the area is a true testament to London’s unique and glorious mosaic of social classes, ethnicities and age groups.

Golborne Road, which runs north from Portobello Road, is a beautiful case in point. Here designer Stella McCartney runs her multi-million pound empire from a converted chapel surrounded by thriving halal butchers, Moroccan cafes and Portugese grocers.

And while further up the Portobello road this heady mix may have got somewhat diluted over the years, here high-end fashion boutiques and avocado-sourdough-sandwich serving cafes, live happily side by side with the bustling fruit-and-vegetable market, vintage bric-a-brac shops and down-to-earth pubs, all of which make Ladbroke Grove such a desirable place to be.
