Kurt and Scott Maethner are brothers who grew up in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Kurt is a businessman who has been living in the Battle Lake, Minnesota area since he graduated from Saint Cloud State University in 1988. Kurt, his wife Tanya and their daughter Addison enjoy living on Lake Clitherall. Scott retired from the United States Air Force after 25 years of service. He graduated from Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota) in 1990. Scott, his wife Terri and their three children Emily, Allison and Thomas currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Kurt Maethner purchased this cabin in 1975
Walhall has been in the Maethner family for over 37 years. The cabin was originally built in 1970 by a friend of the family. In 1975, Art and Judie Maethner (Kurt and Scott’s parents) purchased the cabin as a summer retreat. Art and Judie were both educators so the entire family was able to enjoy lengthy summer breaks while school was not in session. The Maethner family built many wonderful memories at this cabin throughout the years to include fishing, swimming, nature watching and relaxing. After Art and Judie retired and Kurt and Scott left home to start their own lives, the cabin saw increasingly less use. After Art passed away in 2006, Kurt and Scott purchased the cabin from Judie. They converted it to a vacation rental to allow others to experience this wonderful place.
Clitherall Lake is one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in Minnesota. If you are out on the lake fishing, you can see the bottom of the lake at a depth of 16 feet. You can literally see the fish come up to your hook to take a nibble. The lake is 2500 acres, has 14.1 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 70 feet. The area in which Walhall is located has been in tune with nature for many decades. Township, city, county and state government entities respect, appreciate and nurture our natural environment, keeping it as a top priority in all of their planning and development activities. The permanent residents of the area are also very good stewards of the environment. During your stay, you too will enjoy nature's blessings to include the ability to interact with a wide variety of wildlife. You will make friends with chipmunks and squirrels, observe otters, beavers and mink at work, and run across turtles swimming and sunning themselves. If you are a bird enthusiast, you will be able to observe many species to include loons, ducks, geese, robins, blue birds, finches, woodpeckers and many more. Fish that reside in lake Clitherall include walleye, northern pike, bluegill sunfish, black crappie, largemouth bass, rock bass, yellow perch and tullibee.
As soon as you enter the Walhall property, you feel relaxed and happy. Thank you for opening your beautiful home! We will be back!
We just returned from a month at Walhall. This was our second year and now we are making plans for our return in 2016. The owners do all they can to make sure your visit is wonderful.
Walhall Retreat was perfect for our family of four. Sometimes when you go on vacation, I find that it takes a day or two to truly let your hair down and relax. Not here! We were able to find much-need relaxation as soon as we arrived. The cabin is well cared for and well-loved. It oozes history, family, love and years of laughter and memories. We live a few states away and weren't sure which of Minnesota's lakes to pick and from there, which house. Well..we happened upon a real gem.
The cabin is cozy so if you are looking for a sprawling place, this may not suite your needs. It was just right for us and had that "throw back" feel that we gravitate toward in a cabin. They have thought of everything - lots of hooks for towels and clothes; a clean/refurbished bathroom; reading nooks with good lighting; shelves filled with books in case you forgot yours; fishing nets; a "Viking Trail" scavenger hunt for kids; and much much more. Our kids loved the loft sleeping area and we loved the separate breezeway off the kitchen for cards after the kids went to bed. If you need/want TV time during your visit, they have you covered. We never turned it on. Between morning walks, games with the kids, fishing all day, trips to Ben's Bait Shop, Larry's Foods and the ice cream shop in town, who had time/interest?!
We recommend that anyone who books here spends a bit of time at the six-lane bowling alley in town and also hits the road to Zorba's on the Lake about 15 minutes way. We do not own a boat and rented "Blue Betty" the fishing vessel for our stay. Again, it was just perfect for our needs. Kurt made sure it was there upon arrival and magically knew when we needed gas.
Can't say enough about our stay here.
We just spent a month in paradise. Quiet, cozy, peaceful and beautiful. What more can we say. The sunsets have been spectacular. Looking forward to next year.
Our Walhall stay was by far the most peaceful and relaxing lake experience our family has experienced yet! This charming piece of paradise has it all. The clean, cozy cabin had everything we needed. My family enjoyed swimming in the crystal clear Clitherall Lake, caught fish off the dock, and made memories by the relaxing campfire listening to the Loons across the lake. We kept busy with the outdoor games, had a great time trying to complete the "Walhall Bucket List" and relished the quiet mornings on the back deck. We were just minutes away from great eating places like Stella's and Stub's and quaint little gift shops. The Galloping Goose Rentals made it so easy for us to rent canoes, kayaks, and paddle board for some amazing water fun! The owners were so friendly and made us feel welcome. They were so helpful, accommodating, and a phone call away if we needed anything. We could not have found a more perfect vacation rental for our family. We will highly recommend Walhall to our family and friends.
The cabin was clean and comfortable. I was surprised to find everything I needed, from condiments to spray for mosquito bites. I wouldn't have needed to bring paper towels and napkins, either. We hiked at Glendalough State Park, just a short drive from the cabin and would have enjoyed more of the outdoors had it not rained. The cabin's fireplace made for some cozy evenings.
I'd highly recommend this stay! One can even rent bicycles for pedaling on the many nearby trails.
I won a mini stay cation to Walhall and it was just what our family needed. It was a cozy little cabin with all the amenities that one needs. There's a great deck to enjoy the views from, a nice firepit area, and the swimming area was nice too though it was a little chilly this time of year!
