About Liz and Paul Wiederhold

Paul and Liz Wiederhold moved to 'the river' in 2006 to follow their dreams. Their incredible new riverfront location begged to be shared... and 'Riverside Escapes' was born. More than vacation rentals, the future of Riverside Escapes will include riverfront weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats, and more. The Wiederholds were married on the property's island and live onsite where they provide personal service for their guests. The property is full of animals; Diamond - our very friendly campus mascot dog, a flock of very pampered free range chickens, a pair of mallard ducks who have taken up voluntary residency, and lots of other birds and critters. Paul owns a high end roofing company specializing in slate, tile, copper and metal roofs, and copper gutters. When not working, Paul loves to fish, kayak and generally enjoy the river. Liz enjoys hostessing and working 'hands on' at Riverside Escapes including fixing and building things, as well as designing, decorating, sewing and landscaping.

Liz and Paul Wiederhold purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Liz and Paul Wiederhold chose Asheville Area

The French Broad River is a spectacular river meandering through a spectacular town. 'Broad' is a descriptive name for this large, majestic river which is largely unspoiled by development. Yet, just down river, Asheville offers all of the excitement, arts, fine dining, nightlife, and eclectic culture that anyone could seek. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and so many other natural gifts are just a short drive away. Madison County offers some of the beautiful whitewater rafting locations, unspoiled mountain land, and even snow skiing in Wolf Laurel. Our location is ideally located just north of Asheville and south of Madison County. It is truly the best of both worlds.

What makes this cabin unique

Riverside Escapes offers the only island vacation rental in the area and one of just a few riverfront properties. Guests are encouraged to walk the swinging bridge, fish from the shores, sit by the riverside campfire, and generally immerse themselves in the incredible natural beauty of the property. There is something for everyone here. For the more adventurous type, our island cabin offers the feel of remote camping, but none of the hassles. For those seeking more luxury, our mainland cabin has all the comforts of home and more with a hot tub, custom tile showers, coffee bar, wireless internet access, and more.

OMG. Complete relaxation! Just amazing. We can't wait to come back!

This place is truly fabulous & we **LOVED** our time here. We were entirely fortunate as the weather was perfect, & we got to experience the Aug 2017 solar eclipse while laying out in the French Broad River using large boulders as our headrests.

Liz & Paul have put just about everything you can think of in the cabin other than food and drink. A cute cabinet with mugs, wine glasses, cookware, salt, pepper seasonings, bug spray, cooking oil, etc.. The little kitchenette has cast iron cookware & an induction hot plate, silverware, oven mitts, a coffee pot, filters, sugar, etc. etc. A comfortable bed (quite firm) is ready for a deep sleep with quilts, & an electric-heated bed pad (if needed), the cutest lights around the cabin that looked like lanterns but were electric, tons of reading material, cards, wooden games, binoculars, a radio and more. A large fan mounted to the wall helped to circulate the air coming in through the open windows (screened).

There were already four camp chairs around the fire pit and we bought a 24" square of wood, & the fire pit had a built-in grilling shelf you could swivel over your fire for cooking. A small gas grill, 2 hammocks, one on the deck & one by the river, & a nice little dining table on the deck as well as a small booth-type table inside. And a double float tied to a tree for hanging out in the river = YAY! A train passed by across the river a few times a day!

Few wildlife other than geese, heron, a small snake feeding on a fish, green grasshoppers, black crickets and some long-legged spiders that didn't seem harmful. Very few biting bugs. I was sad that the humming bird feeders weren't there but we saw one hummer come zooming by looking for them.

The outdoor shower warms up after about 10-15 pumps of the foot pump but the flow from the shower head is minimal, so my advice is to not expect to do much other than rinse off in the shower. We chose to soap up in the river the second day.

The incinerating toilet really was a cool thing actually, although it ran for hours after you hit "start" so at night it seemed to run a long time.

TOP TIP: bring as little as possible; carrying it from the car, across a very BOUNCY bridge & then the walk to the cabin is bit of a hike in the heat. (There is a wagon on the island side of the bridge.) There's stairs at one end of the bridge too, so forget about rolling stuff.

You will LOVE this place if you are a camping kind of person. Rustic, private & peaceful!

Secluded and peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is rustic but has everything you need to enjoy a unique camping experience. Just bring your clothes and food and you are good to go! No neighbors or noise other then birds chirping! My only wish would have been nice to have a small microwave to reheat up leftovers. And a portable fan to move to the porch if needed. Fortunately I brought my small fan which was a huge help. The owners are great and respect your privacy but are close by if you need them. We would definitely stay again! Thanks Dennis and Debra

Perfect getaway !!!

  • 5 of 5

Ok so I must say I am not necessarily the "outdoorsy" type but this place was perfect! If you enjoy a nice campfire and the sound of the river and some relaxation!!! We will definitely come back here , the toilet is different and the outdoor shower can get a little cool but the feeling you get after a long weekend here is well worth it! It is far enough out to be secluded but close enough in to visit the Biltmore and downtown Asheville! The owners are very easy to work with and very thoughtful having smores and eggs at our cabin waiting on us! Definitely worth it!! Thanks so much for a wonderful long weekend !!

Exactly what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The cabin was the perfect combination of rustic charm and modern convenience, therefore, satisfying myself and my husband! The river offered a peaceful backdrop to our campfire and live entertainment with the Blue Heron's daily visits. Our plan was to use the cabin as our home base for trips into Asheville and some day trips, however, we found ourselves anxious to get back and just sit around the campfire! We can't wait to come back.
