About Kathleen Kalinowski

We are a couple with three daughters, two of whom are grown. We ski, the girls snowboard. We enjoy all the seasons in Vermont; the summer being a fantastically beautiful time though autumn gets the most press!

My husband Ed and I built this house to our exact design criteria in 2005. We wanted the house to be in the Vermont venacular style which we find so charming. Our guests are often surprised to discover that the house is new not a renovated 1890's farmhouse. We wanted a front porch, mudroom, open concept living area with gas fireplace, 2 bedrooms, a bunk room with separate lounge for guests or kids, 2 bathrooms, laundry room, sauna and air-conditioning. The house was designed for entertaining while providing room to get away to read, sleep or relax in peace. All bedrooms have TVs so everyone can be happy with their viewing. But the house is mainly intended for togetherness. There are beautiful outdoor views with French doors at both ends of the open concept area and extensive views from the bedrooms. The kids can enjoy their own 'world' if they like in the kids' apartment/bunk room with includes a lounge, mini-fridge, TV and Game Cube. All of our guests have been very happy with the set-up!

We share the house with another family on alternate weeks during ski season. This is called a '1/2 Share' which for the renting family includes all the holiday weeks, 10 total weeks. We have done this successfully since 2006. It's a great arrangement for those families that that are happy to ski/ride every other week.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you again for sharing your lovely home with us. We have rented many homes over the years on Homeaway, and yours is easily one of the top two we have rented. There are many positive features regarding your house and we enjoyed living there for the week.

I don't want to do a long email but I have to say, you have a top-notch cleaning company and I loved the pocket doors. I have never wanted to talk to one of the homeowners more than I would like to talk to you about your home, and the decisions made in building your home. I'm very impressed with your choices and could give you many more compliments.

It was a great vacation in Vermont and you were right about waiting fifteen minutes and the weather could change. We had many beautiful clear warm fall days.

We loved this rental! It had everything we needed. The house is clean, cozy and has plenty of room. We stayed for a weekend in the Fall and the surroundings were beautiful and peaceful. It is just a short drive to a very charming town. Great rental, Thank You!

Cleanest and most homey rental ever!

  • 5 of 5

This rental was everything it promised and more. Hands down it was the cleanest place I have rented - inside and out. Everything made me feel at home - nothing was for want. From being greeted with a warm note and treats in the refrigerator to the final goodbye it was a welcoming stay. I was considering a second stay even before I ended my first one. I sent the details to my brother who I know would appreciate it for a summer vacation with his family. I enjoyed the sauna even in the summer, but can only imagine its comfort in the winter. This is a great place for one person (albeit big) or for a large family. Kathleen and Co. had more than enough information available to discover the local area. I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw they had a binder filled with user guides for any electronic device (I have the same in my own home). The nearby town of Ludlow had everything extra one could need and the drives to area hikes made the trip more pleasurable. I cannot praise this rental or the owners enough. I just hope I can get the days I need next time as I imagine a place like this will become popular by word of mouth alone. No personal reviews on restaurants as tastes vary, but there are enough in Ludlow, Windsor or Londonderry (proximity drives) to satisfy most palettes (one suggestion - The New American Grill). This one fits the motto of HomeAway to a T!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review and comments on our local area. There truly is something for everyone from restaurants to activities. And it's beautiful in all seasons (exception "mud season"). We have many return guests. One family has summered with us for nine years.

Clean, quiet home with great large level yard

  • 5 of 5

Very nice location on dead end street, so no traffic and very private. Peaceful-able to open windows at night for fresh, cool air. Air conditioning if needed, though. Fully equipped--you don't need to bring a thing to be able to cook meals or prepare snacks or even to barbeque on the gas grille. Great to be able to do laundry (washer and dryer in the basement). Do note that the two upper bedrooms have one queen bed each, and the 2 bunk beds are in the nicely finished basement (there are windows though). House was very clean.

Perfect.

This was by far the best home we rented. It was immaculate and had tons of utensils, pots and pans, towels, blankets etc. owner was a breeze to deal with. Great location.

Owner's Response: We also have stayed in many vacation rentals. We found that we often needed more pots, pans, dishes, silverware etc than were provided. I disliked having to wash stuff in the middle of preparing a big meal! So when we set up our house we decided to provide double sets for the convenience of our guests. Fortunately the kitchen is commodious for this.

A great vacation rental.

  • 5 of 5

This review is long overdue. In October my family and I stayed in this Cavendish Cottage for 8 nights. This house has everything you could want in a vacation home, exactly as described. It was immaculate and very well maintained. The kitchen is stocked with quality cookware, dishes, etc., everything you could possibly need for your stay. The downstairs bunkroom would be perfect for a family with teenagers who would love having their own space. We rode the Green Mountain Foliage Train ride from Chester to Ludlow and I have to say that the Brown’s Sweet Cider we had on the train was the best I have had. We did venture out on an overnight trip to Mount Washington and North Conway, New Hampshire but the rest of the time was spent in the area surrounding Cavendish. We visited Woodstock and ate lunch at the Woodstock Farmer’s Market. The Vermont Country Store in Weston is less than a 30 minutes drive, I could have spent the entire day in the store, and the Bryant House Restaurant next door is a good place to have a nice lunch. We were able to see about 12 covered bridges in the area, and that included some that we found in Keene, New Hampshire area, an easy drive from Cavendish. If I have the opportunity to visit this area of Vermont again, I would hope this rental would be available. The owner was very responsive and easy to work with and made several suggestions of things to see and do. All in all, a wonderful experience. Thank you, Kathleen.

Wonderful house!

  • 5 of 5

A gorgeous, well built house. Spotlessly clean, and very inviting! We came up to do some road cycling, and weren't disappointed, with Okemo and Ascutney close by, there's no shortage of hills to climb! Many thanks to Katherine and Ed for a lovely house, and great communication! We'll likely be back!

Owner's Response: There are many mountain biking options in our area. Okemo, Killington, Ascutney and Pine Hill Park in Rutland are jus some. Lots of other challenging activities; disc golf at Okemo, kayaking on Echo, Rescue and Lake Ninevah, hiking sections of the Long Trail. Or just sit on the front porch, enjoy the quiet and wildlife with a nice cool/ hot drink!
