We are a couple with three daughters, two of whom are grown. We ski, the girls snowboard. We enjoy all the seasons in Vermont; the summer being a fantastically beautiful time though autumn gets the most press!
My husband Ed and I built this house to our exact design criteria in 2005. We wanted the house to be in the Vermont venacular style which we find so charming. Our guests are often surprised to discover that the house is new not a renovated 1890's farmhouse. We wanted a front porch, mudroom, open concept living area with gas fireplace, 2 bedrooms, a bunk room with separate lounge for guests or kids, 2 bathrooms, laundry room, sauna and air-conditioning. The house was designed for entertaining while providing room to get away to read, sleep or relax in peace. All bedrooms have TVs so everyone can be happy with their viewing. But the house is mainly intended for togetherness. There are beautiful outdoor views with French doors at both ends of the open concept area and extensive views from the bedrooms. The kids can enjoy their own 'world' if they like in the kids' apartment/bunk room with includes a lounge, mini-fridge, TV and Game Cube. All of our guests have been very happy with the set-up!
We share the house with another family on alternate weeks during ski season. This is called a '1/2 Share' which for the renting family includes all the holiday weeks, 10 total weeks. We have done this successfully since 2006. It's a great arrangement for those families that that are happy to ski/ride every other week.
Kathleen Kalinowski purchased this house in 2005
Thank you again for sharing your lovely home with us. We have rented many homes over the years on Homeaway, and yours is easily one of the top two we have rented. There are many positive features regarding your house and we enjoyed living there for the week.
I don't want to do a long email but I have to say, you have a top-notch cleaning company and I loved the pocket doors. I have never wanted to talk to one of the homeowners more than I would like to talk to you about your home, and the decisions made in building your home. I'm very impressed with your choices and could give you many more compliments.
It was a great vacation in Vermont and you were right about waiting fifteen minutes and the weather could change. We had many beautiful clear warm fall days.
We loved this rental! It had everything we needed. The house is clean, cozy and has plenty of room. We stayed for a weekend in the Fall and the surroundings were beautiful and peaceful. It is just a short drive to a very charming town. Great rental, Thank You!
Immediately upon arrival, we were very impressed. The home is meticulously maintained. It served us well, as we spent our 25th anniversary week, sightseeing all over Vermont. Our only regret was having to pack up and return to Texas. It is so beautiful up there. The owners "Kathleen and Ed", went above and beyond, to ensure we had a great visit. We plan to return asap.
The Cavendish house was everything it promised to be. From the moment we drove up to the minute we left, we couldn't have experienced a better stay - everything was perfect! The furnishings were comfortable and in fantastic condition - we felt like we walked into a brand new home that welcomed us in.
I had just about exhausted my search for a "home away" when I decided to give central Vermont a look. One of the first homes to appear was Kathleen's place in Cavendish. Frankly, it just jumped off the page. The gray siding, wrap around white porch railing and the red roof made it pop.
A few moments later we were booked for a fantastic foiur days. Kathleen was very easy to do business with. Once we arrived the interior was just like the photos depicted, and condiments left nothing to be desired. The location was perfect for enjoying guiet evenings at the forests edge and exploring Vermont and New Hampshire
Vermont was like steping back in time. No big box stores, motels or fast food. The local folks were a pleasure and made us feel like neighbors.
If you are planning a New England vacation, by all means plan your stay at Kathleen's place and enjoy the greatest breakfast you've ever experienced just down the road at the Vermont Apple Pie Breakfast Restaurant.

This rental was everything it promised and more. Hands down it was the cleanest place I have rented - inside and out. Everything made me feel at home - nothing was for want. From being greeted with a warm note and treats in the refrigerator to the final goodbye it was a welcoming stay. I was considering a second stay even before I ended my first one. I sent the details to my brother who I know would appreciate it for a summer vacation with his family. I enjoyed the sauna even in the summer, but can only imagine its comfort in the winter. This is a great place for one person (albeit big) or for a large family. Kathleen and Co. had more than enough information available to discover the local area. I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw they had a binder filled with user guides for any electronic device (I have the same in my own home). The nearby town of Ludlow had everything extra one could need and the drives to area hikes made the trip more pleasurable. I cannot praise this rental or the owners enough. I just hope I can get the days I need next time as I imagine a place like this will become popular by word of mouth alone. No personal reviews on restaurants as tastes vary, but there are enough in Ludlow, Windsor or Londonderry (proximity drives) to satisfy most palettes (one suggestion - The New American Grill). This one fits the motto of HomeAway to a T!
Cavendish, Vermont. Fresh air, beautiful scenery, relaxed atmosphere in the Green Mts. Something for everyone in a naturalist environment. Get out of the office, take a walk through a covered bridge with your children. Hunt salamanders or antiques. Read a book on the porch. Take a nap with the French doors open and the birds singing to one another while the breeze wafts through the room. Cruise the galleries and fairs for local artists. Eat ice cream on the Town Green. Take a picnic lunch to the local swimming hole. Swim in the mountain clear water. Lie on a warm rock and take another nap. Have a gourmet dinner or barbecue. Enjoy your vacation!
