Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Seaview on Burton: This Tudor style home sits above a Monterey pine forest sweeping a half mile down to the ocean, one of the few vacation homes in the area which borders a forest preserve. The quaint seaside village of Cambria is a leisurely five minute drive from the property.

You are within seconds of scenic walking trails through pine-forested Strawberry Canyon,' which lies directly behind the property. The beach is an easy 15-minute walk through the woods and along quiet residential streets. You can pick through the tide pools at nearby Lampton Cliffs park, or walk along the boardwalk bluff trail or on the miles of forest and marine terrace paths of the stunningly beautiful public Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

For more information, please contact me.

PLEASE NOTE: Seaview on Burton is a site-managed property, similar to a Bed and Breakfast. A separate unit below the main house is occupied by a manager responsible for the forest fire watch, house services (internet, heating, plumbing and laundry), and guest assistance. This unit is completely private and and accessed separately. We have found over the course of our 11 years of operation that this arrangement ensures the property is adequately maintained and guest needs are addressed promptly.

About James Kelty

As writer and documentary filmmaker working in many areas of California, I moved with my family from Los Angeles to this spectacular part of the Central Coast in 1988, both as an inspirational retreat and a place with easy access to other areas of the Golden State.

James Kelty purchased this house in 2000

Why James Kelty chose Cambria

We love back country hiking and mountain biking, particular in Big Sur, for which Cambria is the southern gateway, as well as kayaking in San Simeon Cove. The area is also rich in history, which is my area of expertise as a writer/producer, so that made it an equally good fit. Cultural and environmental attractions include Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I work with both of these organizations on interpretive media projects.

What makes this house unique

My hope is that guests coming to this special house bordering the forest and the ocean will leave feeling refreshed and inspired.

Thank you! We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Just what we needed! We saw 5 deer on our walk thru Strawberry Canyon – lovely!

Serene Property

  • 5 of 5

Being able to stay in a private home for our 3 day anniversary trip was a blessing. But to also have a gorgeous view & such a peaceful environment made our stay perfect and memorable. Each night we sat on the back deck I was amazed at how quiet and peaceful it was, with nothing but the rolling surf and chirping birds to hear. I even heard seals barking one night. The lovely part of this home is that just because it got dark and you had to leave the beach, you don't feel cut off from the beautiful nature in this area. Being in the house was just an extension of enjoying the water and the forest.

There are plenty of other homes around, but you can't tell while inside and on the decks. There are no neighbors on one side and on the other side there are so many trees between the houses you can't see the neighbors house at all...whether upstairs or downstairs. The seclusion & privacy was romantic and special. And to have the beautiful view not only when in the kitchen and dining area, but upstairs in the master bedroom as well made the entire house a joy. This property is a great value as a rental. I had checked into some of the local hotels and we could have paid more for far less.

Mr. Kelty was very accommodating when I contacted him about a last minute trip. We booked just 3 days or so before our arrival & I appreciated him booking us on such short notice.

We had no problem getting there using the directions provided, nor with checking in and getting settled. It was all a breeze.

The kitchen is pretty well stocked. Even though everything wasn't there, I was able to make due just fine with what was there. (a pair of tongs & maybe a few mixing bowls would be a good addition for the kitchen!) As far as pantry staples, it's a bit of a guess. There were a few things that were helpful....olive oil & salt, but no pepper & a bit of old basil was the only seasoning. I would just suggest bringing what you want to cook with. I don't think that's really part of the deal.....if it's there than it's there, but if not...oh well!

The bed was pretty comfortable. Each person has a different preference, but for me a nice feather bed topper would have made this bed perfect, but it was fine as is.

Cambria has water issues. I'm from CA so I'm used to it, but I think it's worse in this area. So be ready anywhere you stay here to be asked to sacrifice a bit on towels & such.

Seaview on Burton

  • 5 of 5

It was our first stay at this lovely place and we hoped not the last one.

It was actually our first stay at a private residence and we especially appreciate the attention to detail by owner-managers like Seaview's as opposed to the agency type home rentals or hotel stay.

View of the ocean, the sound of ocean - great!!

Thank you Jim

It was everything promised and more!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Seaview on Burton! We were looking for a place to enjoy some time with our adult children away from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco and this place was perfect! It is a quiet, peaceful area as promised, with views just like you see online. The house was furnished with comfortable furniture, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. The walk to beach was a little longer than anticipated, but it was a beautiful walk!

The homeowner James was great host, the check in process was easy and everything was as promised. The house rules very well outlined (we loved that) and not unreasonable. We can hardly wait to go back and enjoy this property again. Giving it a 5 star rating is no exaggeration. Everything about it was outstanding!

Lovely Get Away

  • 4 of 5

The home is lovely and beautiful. However, the 1 st floor is not accessible and there is no immediate forest/ trail access from the home. But if you visit purely for relaxation, the house is gorgeous with breathtaking views of the trees and ocean. Very serene. And James Kelly is very kind and approachable!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the compliments. The house is built out over a hillside. The only part not available is the understory, which is below the first floor and below ground level. The first floor is street level, with garage, living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast nook, bathroom and garage. The second floor has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and deck from the master bedroom. So the first floor certainly is “available.” The forest bordering the property’s ocean side is a public preserve, the entrance to which is about 300 feet down the street.

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

The house was lovely and the location is unbeatable. We spent a lot of time on the deck. It is so nice in the early morning, or watching the sea, or the deer walking by, or looking up at the stars.

Owner's Response: It's wonderful to hear when guests' expectations match up with what we have to offer, and that is, yes, the quiet, the deer, the stars.
