Seaview on Burton: 'Step Into the Forest' This Tudor style home sits above a Monterey pine forest sweeping a half mile down to the ocean, one of the few vacation homes in the area which borders a forest preserve. The quaint seaside village of Cambria is a leisurely five minute drive from the property.
You are within seconds of scenic walking trails through pine-forested Strawberry Canyon,' which lies directly behind the property. The beach is an easy 15-minute walk through the woods and along quiet residential streets. You can pick through the tide pools at nearby Lampton Cliffs park, or walk along the boardwalk bluff trail or on the miles of forest and marine terrace paths of the stunningly beautiful public Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

As writer and documentary filmmaker working in many areas of California, I moved with my family from Los Angeles to this spectacular part of the Central Coast in 1988, both as an inspirational retreat and a place with easy access to other areas of the Golden State.
James Kelty purchased this house in 2000
We love back country hiking and mountain biking, particular in Big Sur, for which Cambria is the southern gateway, as well as kayaking in San Simeon Cove. The area is also rich in history, which is my area of expertise as a writer/producer, so that made it an equally good fit. Cultural and environmental attractions include Hearst Castle and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I work with both of these organizations on interpretive media projects.
My hope is that guests coming to this special house bordering the forest and the ocean will leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
Thank you! We had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Just what we needed! We saw 5 deer on our walk thru Strawberry Canyon – lovely!
Thanks James..Everything was great. We had three couples for the weekend. The house was even better than than the photos. We went wine tasting and the location was ideal. The bedrooms and beds were very comfortable and large. The ocean views from the balconies were to die for! Kitchen well equipped and had everything we needed. Went for early morning walks, such a beautiful environment... Watch out for the wild turkey down the street. Cannot wait to visit again!!
It was our first stay at this lovely place and we hoped not the last one.
It was actually our first stay at a private residence and we especially appreciate the attention to detail by owner-managers like Seaview's as opposed to the agency type home rentals or hotel stay.
View of the ocean, the sound of ocean - great!!
Thank you Jim
Being able to stay in a private home for our 3 day anniversary trip was a blessing. But to also have a gorgeous view & such a peaceful environment made our stay perfect and memorable. Each night we sat on the back deck I was amazed at how quiet and peaceful it was, with nothing but the rolling surf and chirping birds to hear. I even heard seals barking one night. The lovely part of this home is that just because it got dark and you had to leave the beach, you don't feel cut off from the beautiful nature in this area. Being in the house was just an extension of enjoying the water and the forest.
There are plenty of other homes around, but you can't tell while inside and on the decks. There are no neighbors on one side and on the other side there are so many trees between the houses you can't see the neighbors house at all...whether upstairs or downstairs. The seclusion & privacy was romantic and special. And to have the beautiful view not only when in the kitchen and dining area, but upstairs in the master bedroom as well made the entire house a joy. This property is a great value as a rental. I had checked into some of the local hotels and we could have paid more for far less.
Mr. Kelty was very accommodating when I contacted him about a last minute trip. We booked just 3 days or so before our arrival & I appreciated him booking us on such short notice.
We had no problem getting there using the directions provided, nor with checking in and getting settled. It was all a breeze.
The kitchen is pretty well stocked. Even though everything wasn't there, I was able to make due just fine with what was there. (a pair of tongs & maybe a few mixing bowls would be a good addition for the kitchen!) As far as pantry staples, it's a bit of a guess. There were a few things that were helpful....olive oil & salt, but no pepper & a bit of old basil was the only seasoning. I would just suggest bringing what you want to cook with. I don't think that's really part of the deal.....if it's there than it's there, but if not...oh well!
The bed was pretty comfortable. Each person has a different preference, but for me a nice feather bed topper would have made this bed perfect, but it was fine as is.
Cambria has water issues. I'm from CA so I'm used to it, but I think it's worse in this area. So be ready anywhere you stay here to be asked to sacrifice a bit on towels & such.
The house was wonderful. We loved the bedrooms and particularly the view from the master suite. The kitchen was nicely laid out and certainly large enough for the four of us to be in there at the same time fixing a meal. The kitchen could use a few more items (some spices, some medium size bowls and a blender) but we found that only a minor drawback. We liked the (high) dining room table with the chair/stools. We enjoyed several meals there and also used the little kitchen table (with stools) to sit and sip our wine, look out at the ocean and chat. Nice!
There living room was comfortable and it was nice to have 2 and 1/2 baths. We parked our car in the garage each night and found that convenient because we could then walk directly into the kitchen through a side door in the garage. There are neighbors on one side and no one on the other side. Trees all around so you couldn't even see the house next door. It felt secluded. Overall, very pleased.
THIS OWNER IS A HARRASER! Upon arriving at our destination after 4 to five hours of driving, we found out that we got double booked! So the owner decided to put us up at the lodge that only had one bedroom and one bathroom. For our inconvenience he said he would buy us dinner and lunch the next day. We had reservations at the black cat that night to celebrate my sister's 40th birthday. He said he was going to tell the black cat he was going to pay, but instead came back to where we were and handed us money which didn't cover the bill. We had decorations that we wanted to put up to celebrate her which we couldn't do because we were basically at a hotel when we paid for a whole house. That night the owner ended up telling us that he would have to give us the cleaning deposit back because he couldn't get a hold of the cleaners and that we were to make our own beds and clean the bathrooms. Um gross! He later called that night and said he would take care of it. The next morning he was cleaning the house which when we actually finally arrived inside was dusty and dirty and who knows if the bathrooms got cleaned or not. We decided to not let this bother our trip and try to put this behind us. The house was spacious and nicer than the lodge which upset us because we were cramped in a one bedroom hotel. We enjoyed our one day but then on Monday night when the owner came back into town, he knocked on the door to let us know he was taking out the garbage. We have him out receipt and the he proceeded to ask, is this a fair amount? It was 100 dollar bill for four people, we ate at a seafood place in morro bay. I'm.Sorry but was it fair that you double booked us and we had a whole weekend planned for my sister's fortieth birthday that you ruined? He then asked, how many people we had staying there because three cars were too many for four people.Um excuse me we come from all around California and really it's none of your business! I'm my years of time share ownership or renting vacation homes, I've never felt more harassed. He didn't even know how long our reservation was for! Then he said to top it off , well how would you feel renting a million dollar home to someone you don't know. Wait are you implying that we lived in anything less? And if so you're in the wrong business buddy! RUDE! Then at the end he said I'm just afraid you're going to give me a bad review. UM, YOU THINK!? Terrible service, RUDE, and a major harrasser! STAY AWAY! He might live downstairs too
