Overview

High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Newly remodeled for 2015 season! Beautiful LOG Home in Mountain setting...

Come enjoy our beautiful, log home in the quiet town of Little Switzerland, NC. Relax, unwind and reaquaint yourself with nature. Enjoy hiking, rafting, fishing, golfing, and horseback-riding . We're just off the Blue Ridge Parkway with nearby attractions including Gem Mines, Craggy Gardens, Linville Caverns and Falls, and Mt. Mitchell State Park. It's a beautiful drive and lots of hiking along the parkway. Grandfather Mountain is about 30 minutes away.

The cabin is at almost 4000ft elevation, providing pleasant summers with cool evenings and snowfall in the winter when surrounding areas may see no snow. It is a very quiet area without a lot of nearby homes. The nearest 'bigger' town for shopping and groceries is Spruce Pine, NC, less than 10 miles away, via the Parkway.

The cabin uses a well and septic, so we limit the number of guests to ensure the resources are not stressed. With larger parties, we recommend shower/bath times be staggered to avoid depleting the 2 hot water heaters. There is a King bed upstairs along with a twin in the loft area. On the main level, there are 2 bedrooms, both with queen beds and one also has a twin with trundle. Downstairs, there are also 2 bedrooms with the same set up of beds as the main level.. In total: 1 King, 4 Queens, 3 Twins , 2 with trundles. The trundles are youth beds and not intended for adults. We allow pets, with a fee, but do not allow smoking inside our home. There are lots of books for reading and games for the children to play. It is our privilege to share our home with you and we want you want you to feel as if you were at home while staying there, We ask that you treat our home with the same respect that you do your own.

About Lori Vreeland

Our cabin is a Southland Home. We are fortunate enough to have family members who build log homes, so our cabin was truly a labor of love!

Lori Vreeland purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Lori Vreeland chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Our love of the mountains and a desire to have a second home, in a cool, quiet mountain area, were our reasons for building our log cabin.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is all wood, with the exception of one tiny closet, under the stairs. For some reason, code required sheetrock! Otherwise, it's all wood; walls, floors and ceiling! It is located on a wooded lot. But every year we get a better view of the mountain from Mother Nature, as she thins the trees with ice and winds! There is a wrap around deck, with outdoor tables and chairs as well as a fire pit area for cool evenings and making s'mores.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the use of your cabin. It was all that we hoped for, both the cabin and the peaceful, beautiful surroundings. The wrap around deck is great. We're looking forward to coming back in the summer when everything is green and lush.

Amazing!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was great! We had plenty of room for 6 adults and 3 children. No problems with hot water. I do advise getting there before dark as the owner suggests. It became extremely foggy when we were about 15 minutes from cabin and we had difficulty finding cabin. In the daylight there would have been no problem! Walmart is about 10-15 minutes away and we were able to get everything we need. Definitely will be booking again next year!!

Owner's Response: Living in the city, we sometimes forget how really dark it can get and the fog only adds insult to injury! Glad you arrived safely and enjoyed your stay. We welcome your return! Joel and Lori Vreeland

Smokey Mts. at their best

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay. We had 10 adults, some couples some single and the cabin was perfect. We were able to share space when we wanted, yet get away when we needed to. We ryde Can Am Spyders, so Walmart being so close was a blessing. Little Switzerland has THE best chocolate ever and the roads in the area are amazing to ryde. You have the Blue Ridge at your fingertips, yet some of the best twisties we have ever road as soon as we jump off.

We will be back. We personally much prefer this area over Robinsville. If you are a biker, look up "The Snake and Devil's Whip."

See you in the spring:)

Wish we could have stayed longer!

Stunning, absolutely a true vacation home. The owner called after we arrived to check if everything was ok on our arrival. Was it ever, the home was spacious and very well appointed. The accommodations were simply too many to list, we lacked for nothing, from the fire pit to the decks we enjoyed our R&R to the max. Would absolutely recommend this getaway to anyone looking for a great vacation home! Thank you!

Only wish that we had more time.

My granddaughter (9yrs old) and I had a on wonderful time here. The home was well decorated, cozy, large enough for a big family and had everything plus some . The beds were comfortable , plenty of fresh towels , the kitchen was well stocked, the location was perfect and Lori and her son Thomas made sure that we had everything that we needed. My granddaughter flipped over the downstairs game room . We were able to go horseback riding , gem mining , went to the top of Mount Mitchel , hiked to a secluded waterfall within several minutes of the cabin. Of course made daily stops by the Little Switzerland Book Exchange to name a few of our ventures. I can't say enough about the great time that we had here and how welcomed we felt .We will defenitly return.

Loved It and Going Back!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best week ever! The house was absolutely wonderful and just beautiful. It was accommodating for a large group of people and the effort to make it a vacation home was well thought through. We had plenty of privacy and 3 levels of “places” to do our own thing. The downstairs has a wonderful game room, darts, board games and a tv. The main level has a beautiful fire place with plenty of room to socialize in, a large tv, movies and the kitchen was perfect. I very pleased with the kitchen furnishing as well as a grill to prepare the meals. The appliances all worked well and were the newer models. The decks were so nice and wrapped around the entire house. We all seemed to linger on the back deck in the early mornings and chatted while listening to the birds. The view was gorgeous and I can only imagine how pretty the leaves are in the fall or how white the snow would be. The stars were amazing to look at. The upstairs level of the house had a really nice sized room for board games, puzzles and there were tons of books to enjoy. ( I actually studied with others in the house!) The kids really enjoyed the fire pit area and we roasted marsh mellows until the ashes burned out. The house had three bathrooms and plenty of beds- sleeps 15! There is a variety of mattress types from soft to firm so everyone was happy. Plenty of extra blankets for the chilly summer nights too! Washer and Dryer furnished- what else could we have asked for? A true vacation home! The owner of the house was a joy to work with- she even called to make sure we arrived safely asked if we had everything we needed. The teens ventured off and visited the caverns, waterfall , local general store for old fashioned candy and even discovered a farm that made homemade cheese. Me? I was just happy to be away from the chaos of life and enjoyed the tranquility. We all enjoyed a wonderful week of rest! This is definitely a must to do again! I highly recommend this for families, couples; young or old!

Avoid this one.

I should have taken heed from the other reviews. Hot water is definitely an issue. There were only three of us and we had to stagger our showers. An hour apart was not even long enough to get hot water and The hot water runs out incredibly fast. I can't imagine how a house full could manage it. The parking area is very small. Two cars max and even then it is a trick getting turned around and out. I called the owner about the deposit on November 14th and she said she would take care of it the next day. I sent an email in December and another one in January with no response. I guess I will chalk this experience up to lessons learned and pay more attention to other reviews in the future.

Little Switzerland is the quintessential 'sleepy little mountain town'. There's a quaint downtown with a great cafe, bookstore, and general store. While it seems remote, you're with 20 minutes of 'civilization' for groceries, gas and shopping. The Blue Parkway is minutes away providing access to an array of activities.
