Your easy D.I.Y. Costa Rican vacation

Beautiful, clean, affordable accommodations very close to funky, surf-town Dominical. If you want a resort-y experience, stay further north. If you want to self-cater but still hit some great local restaurants, this is the place. Owners Dave & Deb will play concierge for you and let you in on the hits and misses of the area so you don't waste a single minute. (unless you want to waste minutes, in which case lazing on the deck or wandering along the miles of beaches in front of the house are options too) If you are a runner, D&D; will show you great runs. Just go!

Beyond Expectations

  • 5 of 5

There hasn't been a review since 2015 so I though I better write one.

Looking at the pictures for Olas Hermosa when searching for a vacation place in CR I was a little sceptical if the view and place would be as nice as described. After settling I can assure you the pictures don't do this justice. The reviews from previous guests are correct - it really is hard to leave the deck (I am writing this while looking out over the palm trees sipping on an Imperial.)

The studio is wonderful - everything you need to have a low-cost vacation (eating at "home" is no problem) and we were more than comfortable with three of us, even with the 36C+ heat.

The beach in front of us is Dominicalito and is best enjoyed for surfing and boogie boarding at high tide (low tide exposes quite a lot of rocks but makes for nice beach combing or running). We printed out the tide table and organized our day around the tides. Other guests indicated that they could walk the beach from Dominicalito to Dominical but, looking at the rocks to the north I am not so sure how nice that walk would be. It's an easy drive but we were happiest enjoying the calmer waters at Dominicalito.

We have been told that this has been one of the driest seasons ever, likely due to El Nino and there is a bit of a water issue right now. Today, if you are looking for a waterfall, Poza Azul is pretty much dry (there is a pool of water but only a trickle coming down the rocks). Instead, drive up toward San Isidro and pay the US$8 p/p to walk into Nauyaca falls - which are exactly as advertised - gorgeous and refreshing. We spotted many Toucans along the walk. Hopefully the rainy season will help replenish the water that is feeding the rivers and water table in this area.

As others have reported Dave is wonderful (Deb is away in CO) and has provided us with everything to make our stay wonderful (if something isn't quite right just ask and he will take care of it) I just spent an hour this morning with Dave out on the rock outcrop on Domincalito beach swapping stories and enjoying the views that run all the way up to Manuel Antonio. We have met him almost everyday around 5 pm (beer o'clock) to share stories while cooling off in the pool.

For those on their way to Olas Hermosa - you will have a great time (don't pack much more than your swim suits). If I come back to the southern cost in CR I will most definitely book into Olas Hermosa.

Owner's Response: Thanks for updating the review with your detailed report. I am going to miss our pool rendezvous' and pre-sunset conversations. It has been great being on vacation with you which is one of the great benefits for having the studio as a vacation rental. After your morning surf, I will have to show you the jungle trail that leads to the south end of Playa Dominicalito. It bypasses the rock outcropping near Por Que No, although going the rock way can be exciting. I suspect you will be back and you can go for a run to town and get a smoothie at Mongo Congo. Having great guests like your family makes getting up each morning feel like I am on holiday too. Hurry back.

Amazing place, amazing hosts, amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time at Olas Hermosa! Dave and Deb were more than gracious. Their place is a little piece of heaven -- perfectly described - such glorious views and close to everything you could need and more. Our only regret is that we didn't have more time visiting with this amazing couple who are so full of energy and delight in sharing all they know about Dominical, Costa Rica and traveling in general. We'll be back!!

Great view and Great location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Olas Hermosa. The view is fabulous and the location is central to quite a few restaurants and sights. We had a car but ended up walking to Dominical, the peninsula and the waterfall as well as walking many many times on the beach.

Dave helped us get a fishing trip set up for a low rate with some other folks and helped us find lots of fun stuff to do! Manuel Antonio and Quepos, San Isidro are all very close if you have a car. A GPS is a must in Costa Rica but the driving is easy and the studio has covered parking in a gated area so no worries!

The studio had a great kitchen and was very comfortable and roomy. All the comforts of home that you need, and Dave downstairs if you need something else! We had fun chatting with him and getting to know his area!

We will definitely come back next year!

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this studio villa for 9 days and had a wonderful time. Dave and Debbie are spectacular hosts and we feel they have become life long friends. The apartment is spacious and clean with a wonderful big balcony providing a 180 degree view of the ocean. 0nly a 20 minute walk and we could experience a beautiful water fall pool which was like heaven on those hot days. We did not have a car but still had a spectacular time walking the beach to town or to a restaurant or just enjoying the warm waters of the ocean. One of our highlights was the horse back ride to Nauyaka falls but there is also white water rafting and many other activities to enjoy in the Dominical area as well. We will not forget our visit to this area with its beautiful beaches and less touristry atmosphere. Thanks Debbie and Dave for a great holiday

Wonderful Experience!

  • 5 of 5

My cousin and I stayed for just over three weeks at Dave and Deb's place this past summer. The studio/accommodations are absolutely beautiful and you are provided with everything you need. The view from the balcony is stunning and the beach and the waterfall (which was my favorite place by the way!) are easily within walking distance. This was one of the best vacations I've ever been on. Dave and Deb are very hospitable and make you feel right at home. So much so that I feel like we walked away with lifelong friends. Dominical is a lovely little town, the locals are friendly and hospitable and there is great surfing. There are also some fun running trails all over the jungle or you can go on a breathtaking beach run. :) We were very happy and satisfied with our stay and would recommend this to any of our friends or family in a heartbeat.
