Cavriglia Barn Rental Photos and Description

Independent stone cottages for 2 people, private garden, pool

Nestled in the hills that extend from the Chianti towards the Arno river valley, on the border between the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, lies Il Colombaio, a characteristic and charming old farmhouse surrounded by silvery-green olive groves.

The property is composed of three buildings: the farmhouse, the hayloft and the stable.

The farmhouse is partly inhabited by Andrea and Marina; it has an independent apartment on the ground floor, while the hayloft and the stable have been trasformed into two small houses. The buildings are surrounded by an olive grove and an extensive lawn where the swimming pool is located, in an isolated and panoramic position.

Il Colombaio offers you the chance to enjoy the everyday pleasures of life in Tuscany, the beauty of the Tuscan countryside and its authentic rhythms, as well as being the ideal starting point for exploring this region.

Whether you want to visit the popular sights in Tuscany, or to hike or bike amidst the hills of Chianti and the Crete Senesi, at the end of a busy day you can find the warm feeling of coming home and relax.

Each apartment is independent and has a private garden, equipped with table, chairs and sun chairs. Because your privacy is our priority, and we want you to feel right at your own home.

Il Colombaio is the ideal place for those who love ciclying: Andrea is an amateur cyclist, he knows all the routes in this part of Tuscany, and is always willing to provide help and suggestions and, on request, guided tours.

The famous vintage cycling event “L’Eroica” takes place in Gaiole in Chianti, just 12 km from here, the first weekend of October, during the traditional grape harvest.

About INTERNET - Please be advised that here, as well as in most of the Italian rural areas, the Internet connection may be slower than expected, and the data allowance is limited. This means that you can use Internet for browsing, e-mailing, voice calling, but you'll have to give up live streaming, up/downloading large files, online gaming and video calling. If these activities are your priority, we suggest you to search for an accommodation that ensures a reliable and unlimited connection (cities and towns are generally better served than rural locations).

Please understand that the quality of the internet connection does not depend on us: we share with our guests the same service that the Companies give us. As always happens, rural areas are left behind by technological advancements but, on the other hand, it is precisely this "slow time" that makes the Tuscan countryside so appealing as a holiday destination.

About Marina

We are a family of 3: Andrea, Marina and our daughter.

Marina purchased this barn in 2003

Why Marina chose Montevarchi area

We think this is an ideal place to live. Cavriglia is surrounded by the most beautiful places in Tuscany: Chianti, Crete Senesi, the cities of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, just to mention the closest ones; at the same time Cavriglia is an “authentic” village, because it is only lightly touched by the tourist routes.

What makes this barn unique

Our property combines privacy and comfort, the typical atmosphere of the old Tuscan farmhouses and the quality of being at hand. We are always happy to welcome guests who choose to stay in our region and help them, if they want, get the most from their holiday. Many travelers don’t venture outside the major destinations. For this reason, they sometimes go back home thinking that Tuscany is a mostly touristy destination with lots of tourists everywhere. Quite to the contrary. If you are ready to venture off the beaten path and see more than what you find in guidebooks, you will go home with a completely different image of this amazing region, certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

An absolutely fabulous find! What would we do without Holiday Rentals? We had a lovely week enjoying the peaceful, beautiful location. Il Fienile is a great little place full of rustic charm: every thing we needed to relax. Thanks to Marina for being a great host. Will certainly recommend this to friends and look forward to returning (Kev and Dawn,UK).

While we have been to Italy before, this was our first visit to Tuscany. We felt as if we were at our own private villa: the combination of daily sunny skies, the wine and food, the many excursions and coming “home” to il Colombaio these past two weeks have made this our “best vacation ever”. You can be certain that we will return (Ralph and Maggie, Canada).

It would be difficult to imagine a better centre for exploring the beautiful Tuscan scenery. Add to that the charm of the house and Marina’s and Andrea’s welcome and you have an ideal holiday location. (Andrew and Carol, France).

What a lovely placed! My husband and I stayed for week at Il Fienile, and would have happily stayed many more. The farmhouse itself is perfect, very quiet and quaint. The property itself is a delight with lovely grounds and great views. The pool area is lovely to laze by and read a book and lovely and refreshing for a dip from time to time to cool down. Marina is a gracious and lovely host.

Quaint Tuscan hospitality

  • 5 of 5

We loved Il Fienile, it was everything we expected in a Tuscan holiday home! The grounds are well kept, the home itself was very welcoming and comfortable. We loved the location in the Tuscan hills, yet close proximity to a small village with a market and choices of restaurants. It was also within 10-15 minutes from a train station with easy access to Florence and Rome. Marina was attentive to all of our needs, and even folded our load of laundry--we certainly did not expect that! I would recommend this home to anyone looking for great Tuscan travels, it is a relaxing and hospitable place!

All you need

  • 5 of 5

Il Fienile was a perfect place to stay for my husband and I looking to enjoy the delights of Chianti. The converted hay shed was small but functional. A small lounge and kitchenette upon entry, then a bedroom down a short flight of stairs and bathroom. The window from the bedroom looked out over the olive trees to the hills beyond. The only negative was that the only windows in the lounge/kitchen were up high so did not afford much light.

The local town of Cavriglia had a lovely restaurant and trattoria but if you wanted to go further afield, the villages of Chianti were only a short distance away.

Il Fienile, what a fabulous place!

  • 5 of 5

We recommend this property without hesitation.Such a relaxing time, fabulous pool and real, out of the hustle and bustle of the crowded cities. We had no problem just staying and sitting and drinking wine. If we felt inclined (we did) then we headed off to one of the numerous and typical small wine towns or into Sienna. All were easily reached by car. There is a small, wonderful winery very close by, Poggi del Chianti. The little town of Cavriglia provides a glimpse into non-touristy Italian life and has all the food, drink, supplies needed.

We were in Il Fienile but also were able to walk through Il Colombaio thanks to dinner with some new friends renting that space. Kitchen provides the basics and enough to cook meals, which we did a couple times. Space is comfortable and clean. The only drawback was weak wifi signal. But we got used to that real quick...we were in Italy and simply didn't care!

Thanks Marina for sharing your property.

Nice place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Il Fienile is a good place to stay, particularly if you are looking for somewhere peaceful with easy access to popular locations such as Florence and Sienna.

Cavriglia and the surrounding area is a sleepy little village with nothing much happening, but you can get all the essentials from the local supermarket and there's a very good restaurant nearby.

Marina is a good host, she won't hassle you but is on hand to help if you need her.

The cottage itself is located in a nice garden, is well maintained and ideal for a couple. There are no pool towels provided, and there could be more kitchen utensils for cooking.

As long as you are happy to be in a very quiet location where driving is essential, we'd recommend this property.

Outstanding!

Amazing property, simply amazing. Splendid views, quiet country living and fresh air. The owner of the property left us alone and offered us complete freedom. Superb base for local walks, driving to Chianti towns or simply sitting in the yard with a glass of wine and gazing up into the mountains. Can't wait to return. Do not miss the restaurant "Papposileno" in town.

Il Colombaio is located in the surroudings of Cavriglia, a small town at the gates of the Chianti, in the historic heart of Tuscany, equally distant from the cities of Florence, Siena and Arezzo which are approximately 40 km away. The property lies on the side of the hill that descends from Montaio to Cavriglia; Montaio is an ancient hamlet, where you can enjoy the panorama of the entire valley. Although Il Colombaio is located in the open country, it is only 1,5 km far from Cavriglia, 20 minutes walking. In Cavriglia you find coffee bars, restaurants, food shops, laundromat, bank and chemist.

Both the towns of Montevarchi and San Giovanni Valdarno are only 8 km away: here are railway stations and every kind of shops, stores and services, including the open-air market every Thursday morning, in Montevarchi, and every Saturday morning in San Giovanni.

The easy access to the motorway A1/E 35 Milan-Florence-Rome (the Valdarno exit is only at 13 km) allows you to reach numerous interesting spots within a short time, both in Tuscany and Umbria, while few kilometers south of Cavriglia you enter the suggestive territory of the Crete Senesi.

The point of reference for all cycling enthusiasts is "Tuscany Bicycle" in Gaiole in Chianti, 12 km away, where you can rent both modern and vintage bicycles.

Notes:
Smoking is not allowed inside the apartment. Small pets are permitted, only with prior approval. 5 Euro/day per pet fee applies. About air conditioning: consider that it is quite uncommon in Italian homes, especially in the old buildings, as the thickness of the stone walls, tile floors and wooden shutters to keep out the midday sun, helps to keep homes remarkably cool naturally. If you plan your trips for April, May, June or September keep in mind that the weather is pretty balmy in these months, and chances are you will use A/C just occasionally during July and August.
