Oceanfront on the Bay of Fundy

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

- 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, washer/dryer, sleeps 6

This oceanfront property sits on 14 acres at the end of a ¼-mile long private drive. Sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, headlands, and islands -- and no other house in sight in any direction. There are over 700 feet of varied ocean frontage, including coves, rocks, tidal pools and a pebble beach – with a footbridge and walking path connecting all.

Each of three bedrooms has a full ocean view. There are two full baths, kitchen, living, dining and laundry rooms. The entire house was repainted and redecorated in 2003.

Property is between St. Andrews and Saint John, and about a ½ hour from each. It is also 6 miles from a provincial park with a mile long sand beach for swimming and miles of trails for hiking. Several excellent seafood restaurants nearby, and a small town for essentials is a ten minute drive.

NOTE HOMEAWAY/VRBO has recently imposed a "Service Fee" on renters that goes directly to them. If you contact me directly, and book by cheque, you can avoid that fee. I apologize for this, but we were given no say in this fee and receive no benefit from it.

In most seasons our minimum rental period is one week, and runs from Saturday to Saturday. Unless the week is blocked in gray on the site calendar, it's available. When in doubt, email me directly at

Spectacular Location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous week here in June 2016. Upon arrival we quickly realized that the location was actually more spectacular in person than can be captured in photographs. The sounds of the crashing waves at high tide were mesmerizing. And speaking of tides, for first time visitors to the Bay of Fundy, seeing the 20 foot plus swings from low to high tide was a wonder.

The house itself was exceptional. First, it was extremely clean and well stocked with towels and paper products. Second, except for the bathrooms, all rooms have a great view of the water. And as others have mentioned, the sounds of waves at night made for restful sleeping. Third, the lack of television and internet access was, for us, a bonus. This was the ultimate place to enjoy being unplugged.

The location, midway between St. Andrews and Saint John, was a bonus when it was time for excursions. And we spent a super day traveling to Grand Manan Island via the ferry located only 20 minutes from the house. Also, we traveled to the house from the States via the new Portland, ME to Yarmouth, NS ferry and then on New Brunswick and the house via the Digby, NS to Saint John ferry. The car ferries were fun, fast, scenic, and added to the adventure. We'll certainly travel on the ferries again.

Everything about staying at this house exceeded our expectations -- and our expectations were high. In all likelihood, we'll be back. Thanks Doug!

Owner's Response: Thank you. It may sound silly, but much of the pleasure we get from owning and renting this house is hearing how much others enjoy it.

My husband and I recently spent the week here for a family vacation which included our teens and our parents (and dog) and were all very pleased with the entire package. The house was exceptionally clean, neat and equipped with everything your could possibly need. The privacy and yard was fantastic, large enough to play volleyball and badminton (we brought) and the VIEW was amazing. All of the bedrooms face the ocean side which is the BEST lullaby ever with the windows open at night!! Loved that fact there isn't TV and Wifi which really added to the quality of family time. We were prepared with puzzles and books but found a great selection of games, books, puzzles and movies at the cottage to use. The only things that could have made our stay better would have been a second week and shorter drive as we live in Ontario. We highly recommend this for the ultimate place to unwind, relax and go old school with family time.

Truly awesome location!

  • 5 of 5

Three letters sum up this place: WOW! Or as texters would say: OMG! Imagine being able to stand and look to the right and to the left and the only thing as far as you can see is trees, rocks and OCEAN. Fall asleep to the sounds of that ocean and awake refreshed and ready for whatever you decide to do, or not do. Add to that so much counter space in the kitchen and both bathrooms that you can unpack and move in and still have space left over. Our only regret was that without internet or local TV station to get the weather, we couldn't plan a whole day hike. We didn't discover the radio until the 3rd day and that did help a lot. If Michigan were closer to New Brunswick, we'd be there every year.

Relaxing/Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

After a long drive from CT, the minute you park in the driveway you are in for a treat. What views. From the deck, the dining area, the kitchen, the bedrooms. The sound of the water at night is so relaxing. This is a great place for anyone of any age. There is as much or as little to do as you would like. We drove north to see the Hopewell Rocks as that was the real reason behind our visit, and it was worth the drive. The pictures don't do the property justice. The property was very clean and well maintained. This was a whole family vacation w/6 adults and all agree that it was amazing. Honestly, none of us had one negative thing to was a perfect week.

Great location, great house, perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

It's been about 9 months since we stayed at this property in Pocologan, so we've had plenty of time to digest the entire vacation, which I think is necessary before any review. My wife and I constantly bring up this vacation in conversation, and without a doubt, it was one of the best, most relaxing we've ever had. As a point of reference, my wife and I are both 30 and with this vacation, we were looking for a very low-key getaway. We live in Central Pennsylvania, about a 12-hour car ride from New Brunswick. We drove the long haul to Pocologan with our dog (thanks to the owner for being accommodating), and it was absolutely worth it. This house is very private and remote, which is exactly what we were looking for. Like most other reviewers, we spent most of the week at the house... reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, sitting on the decks, exploring the property, walking along the rock beach, BBQing, and watching several old VHS and DVD movies that are at the house. We did venture out to Saint John (a very cool little city), but we barely scratched the surface of all the things we could have done. For those that want to jam-pack their schedule with things to do, there are plenty of options. We mostly just wanted to unwind, and this property is perfect for that. There was another reviewer that mentioned something about the glass doors being hazy. We don't agree. The view from every room was amazing. And I think it's unfair to rate the house lower because of that, especially at this price point. There is, as others have mentioned, a fishing operation off-shore, unseen in the photos. But in our opinion, this was not a disruption at all. The boats are quite far away. And if anything, it actually made the view more interesting, as we could watch them come and go. The entire experience staying at this house was great. Another big advantage to this property is that the owner is quick to answer your questions and help you with anything you need. We've stayed in other rentals over the years, and it is 100x nicer to have an owner who truly cares about your stay. If you're looking for a quiet getaway with no hassle, we absolutely recommend this property! You won't regret it.

McCarthy's Point is in the small fishing community of Pocalogan, New Brunswick. The coast in this area of the Bay of Fundy is generally rocky, with some tall cliffs and majestic headlands. However, there is a mile long sand beach for swimming just 5 minutes drive away at New River Beach Provincial Park. A short drive away is the old Canadian resort town of St. Andrews, with golf, many restaurants, shopping and many old Victorian estates. The province's largest city - Saint John - is about 1/2 hour drive away in the opposite direction. Ten minutes away is the town of St. George, for groceries, pharmacy, etc.
