Valle Crucis ~ Bear Tree Cabin in the Woods ~ Biking, Hiking ~ See Reviews!!

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms plus large bonus room + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Enjoy fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere at Bear Tree Cabin! Cute as a button, it's nestled on the margin of a forest and gets its nickname from an unusual natural formation on a tree in the yard that looks like a bear is hugging it.

Our zip code is Sugar Grove, but the cabin is just 3 miles from the historic Mast General Store in Valle Crucis and is situated near a rural farming neighborhood. Fishing, canoeing or swimming in the Watauga River is 2 miles away. Bring your mountain bike and enjoy the gentle grade of the Watauga River Road ... or for a little more adventure, let our resident mountain bike expert recommend a nearby trail that fits your abilities ...

No A/C needed at our shady spot in the cool mountains of NC. Cabin has ceiling fans in each bedroom and in both living areas to help with those occasional hot days in summer.

Shopping at the historic Mast General Store is only 3 miles away. Restaurants of all types are in nearby Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock as well as a few in the village of Valle Crucis itself. Hiking trails are available onsite or within a short drive.

And during the winter months ... Three ski resorts are within a 30 to 40 min. drive. Cross country skiing onsite is available if snow conditions are right. Snow tubing is an option for the non-skier at some ski resorts nearby. At the end of the day, come 'home' to a relaxing hot tub.

About Angela

A resident of Watauga county for most of his life, owner Jim Henson has traveled around the world climbing mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, and Mt. Ranier. He is an avid mountain biker and enjoys playing tennis. He grows Christmas trees on part of his farm, but the vast majority of his 250 acres is woodlands and he has donated a conservation easement on more than half of his land to the Blue Ridge Conservancy. When you inquire, you will be corresponding with Jim's assistant, Angela.

Why Angela chose Sugar Grove

After owning the 250-acre farm for over 40 years, Jim decided to build a cabin in 2006 for friends and family to share in the beauty of the location. Valle Crucis is centrally located to Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock.

What makes this cabin unique

Bear Tree cabin gets its name from an unusual natural formation on a tree near the cabin. The wooded surroundings allow for the discovery of many of Mother Nature's wonders! An extensive network of mountain bike trails is not far away.

Terrific family getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Bear Tree Cabin was right near perfect for a winter weekend sampler of all the region has to offer. It is very well appointed and feels immediately like home. Despite single degree temps at night, the cabin was toasty all weekend - as was the hot tub!

Our kids felt like Daniel Boone in the rhododendrons on the ridgeside and we all relished in the privacy.

Beech and Sugar and even Appalachian Ski Mtn. are all right at 30 minutes away and downtown Boone is only 20 minutes out, making this home the perfect place for a group who goes in different directions for different pursuits. It will be an easy reservation to make again in any season!

Perfect weekend

  • 5 of 5

Very nice cabin and exactly the kinda place my family needed this weekend. It snowed about 7-8 inches and 26 degrees but made it perfect for the kids playing in the snow and making the trip to Hawksnest tubing park close by. We then came back to relax in the hot tub while it snowed more. Sitting next to the cozy fireplace and the peace and quiet were what made it a perfect place. Cabin was very clean and had everything we were looking for—seclusion, peace and quiet, hot tub, clean!!! Kids loved it too.

Great Place to go and Get away!

  • 5 of 5

Nice little cabin, that was far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Boone yet close enough for when you had to run into town.
