Kenwood House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Be sure to view our VIDEO to get a better understanding of the property (@ upper left corner of picture above, click video link). This one of a kind stone lodge is located in a secluded location at the very heart of the Sonoma Valley, all 5 bedrooms are large and have a private, ensuite bath. We have a caretaker nearby, so unlike most VRBO rentals, you can be assured of superior oversight and assistance. We now have access to a rural event facility or can help you locate a back roads venue of choice. If you want to check dates and specific pricing, you can do this very accurately on the upper right of this web page in the reservation box. Just enter the in / out dates and click “Get an Instant Quote” just under the BOOKIT button. The quote will be correct; we keep the online info up to date.

SONOMA COUNTY REGULATIONS FOR VACATION RENTALS WHICH WE MUST RESPECT AS WELL AS THE RIGHTS OF OUR NEIGHBORS:There can be no parties of any sort nor amplified music out of doors. Our fire-pit must be turned off and all conversation moved indoors by 10pm every night, no exceptions. Failure to heed these rules is ground for forfeiture of your entire deposit as we are at risk of loosing our rental permit; thank you!

CONCIERGE: We have a full-time concierge on staff well versed in the many and diverse activities at offer in the Wine Country. Formerly General Manager of a 5-star boutique hotel in the Sonoma area, Nicole's forte may be her in-depth knowledge of all the wineries, famous to up-and-coming, in the 2 county area. Let her organize tour and tasting itineraries for your group at those award-winning private wineries not open to the public including transportation and informative talks from owners or winemakers. She can arrange in situ private pours/tastings by some of the county's best winemakers or private chef presentations or meals with wine country pairings right at our property. Perhaps you want to know the best choice for hot air balloon trips or where to zip through the redwoods - ensure the most informed visit possible to this multi-faceted agricultural area. If you can dream it, we can organize it for you; there is a fee for service.

OVERVIEW: The house is 4000 square feet including 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms in the main house and 1/1 in the nearby guest cottage with its own full kitchen. All 5 bedrooms have private baths and are uniquely appointed. There are 2 stone fireplaces, professional kitchen, turn of the century wine bar, chemical free lap pool, waterfall, 8 person spa/hot tub, stone fire-pit with extensive outdoor lounging and dining areas, bocce ball court and dedicated media room. It is situated just off the very center of the Sonoma Valley floor, at the mouth of a granite canyon which becomes Sugar Loaf State Park. The locally quarried stone walls of the first floor are over 1' thick, providing luxurious natural air conditioning. The outdoor splendor merges with the indoors as all the front-facing first floor windows bifold back to open completely. Secluded and picturesque, there are endless views to the forested peaks of the nearby state park while just minutes from the best wineries. Rustic, country French antiques abound with an informal 'feet up' level of comfort and ease throughout.

CHECK-IN is guaranteed by 4:00 p.m. and checkout is at 11:00 a.m. We do our very best to accommodate early check-ins and late check-outs, but cannot make any guarantees until one week prior to arrival.

HIGHLIGHTS: Idyllic in the summer, the house is uniquely fabulous in the winter, spring and fall because of the great room and 2 stone fireplaces. Rainy, cool days are a delight with friends or family gathering around the massive living room fireplace and cooking in the vast professional kitchen with its 2 islands, 2 dishwashers and room for 3 to cook simultaneously at the professional Viking range. An adjacent 14-foot wine bar affords temperature controlled refrigeration for optimal wine tasting. When outdoor temperatures drop, there is radiant heat (under the limestone flooring) so one is more than comfortable in the high-ceiling, main floor spaces. When the rainy season starts, the nearby creek fills significantly and rushes by to the valley floor. It can sound like Niagara Falls is across the way; truly delightful. There is a bocce court in the side yard and a separate theater room with 70' led screen and surround sound system. The pool is a chemical free lap pool, 12’ wide by 50’ long. The antique European, hand embroidered linen sheets (dating fro the 1st half of the 20th century) will be line dried in the fresh country air (weather permitting), hand ironed and waiting for you to sleep ever-so deeply in.

There is nothing to compare to gathering in front of a big fire. Often even summer nights are cool enough to allow for a blaze. There are 2 stone fireplaces on the first floor. The living room fireplace is right out of the days of yore when stone lodges had oversized fireplaces as the center of the household. One of the first floor king bedrooms has its own stone fireplace. A memorable gathering place is our outdoor fire-pit under 150 foot tall fir trees with adjacent propane grill - a fabulous place to encircle your group around a roaring fire, share stories and tall tales. There is firewood on the premises and all the fireplaces will be stacked, ready for your match to set alight.

Culinary options galore: We are so fortunate that the renowned chef John Ash and his right hand, Mei Ibach, are managing the culinary program. John Ash is often referred to as the “Father of Wine Country Cuisine”. His namesake restaurant, John Ash & Company, was the firsts culinary marvel of its type when it opened its doors in 1980. Today he is an acclaimed author and much sought after teacher, and consultant. If desired, Mei can add her unique Thai and Indonesian background to her wine country flavors - mingling exotic Malay and Chinese spices. Let Mei or John create the menu of your dreams; whether you want a big outdoor barbecue with a selection from John’s newest cook book, or a 6 course sit down extravaganza with the most exquisite wine pairings the county has to offer. Team building cooking events are a very popular group activity to consider.

We can make arrangements/recommendations for any of the following (concierge fee may apply):

Private chef for a luxury in situ experience or any and all catering

Event planning

Wine tastings, pairings, private tours

Stock the frig with your list of preferred delights

On site cooking classes

About blair spangler

I am interior designer trained in both the US and France. In 1999, I totally gutted and rebuilt this solid stone house, making sure it retained all the character of the original structure but including the luxuries of a brand new home. Because my background is specifically in hospitality design, I think you will find that I have done well to anticipate the guests' needs as they come to the house for profound rest and relaxation - as well as to partake of the wonders of the Valley of The Moon. Let our concierge help you plan the idyllic trip to this amazing area with ever-changing things to seen do - and so much to learn about wine and various other agricultural products.

blair spangler purchased this house in 1998

Why blair spangler chose Sonoma County

This location is in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, also known as the Valley of the Moon; to me the most beautiful part of the Sonoma Valley. The coastal indigenous tribes of the area, Miwok, Pomo and Wintun peoples, referred to the "Valley of the Moon" in their legends. The phrase "Valley of the Moon" was first recorded in an 1850 report by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo to the California Legislature. According to Jack London, who had a ranch here, the Native American word Sonoma means "valley of the moon." He used it for his book of the same name. But there are several other possible translations for Sonoma (see Sonoma County, California). According to the Miwok tribes that lived in the valley, and the Pomo, it meant "valley of the moon" or "many moons". White settlers may have accidentally translated the words "many moons" into "valley of moons". Miwok legends say that the moon seemingly rose from this valley, or was "nestled" in the valley, or may have even sprung up multiple times in one night! The house construction was started in about 1949 by a crazy naturalist who continuously added on to the property for the next 10 years or so. They did a lot of hunting in the valley up till the 1960's. There is a cement block shed behind the house that was a walk in cooler where they hung the deer and mountain lion carcasses. We still have some mountain lion in the area - but they stay up in the park, never any problem. If they find any bear they trap them and take them up to Lake County. What is now the guest cottage was actually built to house raccoons - luckily they had long departed when I took possession in 1998. The original owner had also started a tunnel under the little Adobe Canyon Rd so all the animals (who he sometimes hunted!) could cross to get water in the creek. This is rather an indication of his eccentricity as even today there is not any traffic to speak of on this road for it has no outlet beyond the state park.

What makes this house unique

This lot is located in a canyon, the only such geographical particulars of its type in Sonoma. The Canyon provides cool and shade in the relative extreme heat of the Sonoma summers. Everything is green and cool in the shelter of Adobe Canyon in the summer and fall while the Valley is burnt and arid, grass-less hills and dusty heat. Views are spectacular to the state park that surrounds this rural location. It is so dark at night you can't see to walk without the moon and the stars are huge and ever-so bright. I gutted the entire house in 1999. The trusses and wood ceiling in the great room were put in at that time as were the hand-cut pillowed limestone floors and the pool. We convinced the owners to allow us into a local stone quarry which had long been closed - to retrieve enough of the same stone to execute the pool terrace and decks. This one of a kind structure affords a truly memorable gathering place for friends and family.

Paradise in Sonoma

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property to celebrate my 60th birthday. There were 10 of us at the house, including a little one. The outdoor space is what attracted us to the property and it did not disappoint. It kept everyone busy with the pool (which looked smaller then it actually is in the pictures), bocce court, hot tub and fire pit in addition to a beautiful live edge table on the stone patio. It is a very incredible location, close to several very popular wineries. We especially enjoyed La Rochelle and Kunde. The indoor space was immaculate, with a large kitchen to cook in and a media room, in which we watched the Finals NBA game 7 with the whole family. The house is very classy, yet cozy. We loved it. The house does cool down if you follow the instructions given. This was surprising, considering some days it approached 98 degrees. The only negative is the county quiet hours, which are strictly enforced. The neighbors are much closer then anticipated. It is difficult to keep track of time when you are enjoying your vacation! A great time was had by all!

Could not have been better!

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful and relaxing in every way. A group of friends and I stayed recently and were blown away by the small but meaningful details that decorate and add charm to this home. It has a warmth that feels immediately inviting. Booking was a breeze and we needed for nothing all weekend. Will certainly stay again!

Once Great! Twice, magnifico, 3 times amazing, 4 times the charm!

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's fourth time staying at this magnificent property. We live within 2 hours of the Lodge, but every time it feels as if we are a world away. This place is all about relaxing and just forgetting what's outside the gates.

Convenient to Sonoma's downtown, countless wineries, Sears Point Raceway (or whatever they call it now), the place couldn't be better for a week off.

The owner's attention to detail at every turn is amazing. My teen daughter and her friends loved the way they could basically get away from the adults in the main house by going to: the guest house, the pool, hot tub, bocce court or media room.

The property is secure on all sides, and has a great safe feel to it. Not a place for a raging party, but more of a place for a really comfortable time with friends and family.

I can't thank the owner enough for her responsiveness when even little things went wrong, like a towel bar coming off. Great prompt and respectful service.

I highly recommend this place, and have already inquired about another return visit.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The house and property were amazing! The pictures didn't do it justice. Very close to the wineries but we didn't want to leave the property. Clean, well-kept, and lots of things to keep you entertained. You almost need several days at the house just to get the full experience.

Superb property...professionally managed and maintained!

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely impressed with everything at this property. It is well equipped for a group of 10, with quality glasses, dinnerware, etc. Only two minor issues during our stay....smoke alarm went off with no visible smoke in the unit and fan engaged on stove...eventually shut off. The only other comment is that the 2nd bedroom upstairs needs a chest of drawers and something to put a suitcase on...we had to "borrow" from the Master BR for the couple in BR#2.

Would return to this property anytime...a great visit!!!

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 5 couples enjoyed this long weekend immensely. The house was better than we could have imagined. The amount of living space on the property, both inside and out, was superb. We could all be together around the indoor fire, outdoor fire pit, dining table and kitchen without feeling cramped. At night, we all retreated to our lovely bedrooms for our own space. The house is well equipped with everything we needed to make great meals together. The property is close to a beautiful trail, which made for a great morning hike! We only wish we could have stayed longer. We can't wait for our next trip to the lodge!
