About Blondie or Michael Cranford

Michael Cranford and Rebecca Amelia are both artists,We LOVE the Osa, the people here and especially the abundance of wildlife. You need not leave to find it. Just sit for a few minutes. It comes right here without leaving to find it! We invite you to experience nature as it was.

Blondie or Michael Cranford purchased this house in 1997

Why Blondie or Michael Cranford chose Costa Rica

Being elevated just a bit off the beaches allows the cool breezes to drift up and gather the coolness from the rainforest. Being where the rainforest meets the sea, we have the perfect combination of both worlds! Beautiful ocean and Gulf views AND being cool and comfortable. With the sweeping ocean views and being at the cusp of rainforest meeting sea, you will leave refreshed and relaxed. Having lived on the OSA for 20 years and living where there is no grid power, we decided that Sombra de la Lapa was the perfect marriage of comfort and exotic wilderness with ocean breezes. Bask on the beach during the day but come home to cool comforts and sleep comfortably at night. No other guests walking by or disturbing you and all private property. Being on the grid means you have standard electricity while still lessening your footprint since 90% of Costa Rica electricity is derived from hydro power. We opted not to go with private solar or hydro systems since in all applications we know of in vacation rental homes, the systems cannot support leaving phones, laptops, cameras, iPods, etc being left plugged in and definitely cannot make ice. Being connected to the grid, allows you to be on vacation and not worry about some electronic device being left plugged in and having comforting cool fans or AC all night. It is nice to have luxury for the same price as other locations which cannot offer conveniences.

What makes this house unique

Because we are the only vacation property off the newly paved road which goes right into Puerto Jimenez, we not only offer our guests total and complete seclusion and privacy, but also very comfortable, easy access to town, beach and tours. Almost every other rental home on the OSA which offers this kind of seclusion is a minimum of 1.5 hrs from grocery stores, gas station, tours, etc and on a RUGGED 4 wheel only road. Many days of the year and after heavy rains, this road is impassable. Our wildlife reserve is yours to explore and still go out for dinner without it being a major expedition. If you have a large group or family and want to accommodate larger groups for weddings, reunions, etc ask us about our other 2 homes located on the same reserve. All 3 homes are located on opposite sides of the reserve so each home is totally and completely private. We also have 24/6 caretaker.

Guestbook comments from the owner

HomeAway asks all guests who leave a review, to sign up for an account in order to do so. Therefore, guests have told us they prefer not to leave a review on this site. However we have many more, up to date, reviews on FlipKey listing #195460.Feel free to see more up to date reviews on that site. Meanwhile I continue to send our guests a review request through both sites!

Come visit us! Cooler breezes, elevated views of the shimmering ocean where rainforest meets sea! Corcovado National Park is our neighbor and you can walk to it from our reserve.

PURA VIDA - a common greeting here which translates to "pure life".

That alone should make you want to come!

Amazing Tree House Experience

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of 5 adults, well travelled in Central and South America, and have just returned from Michael and Blondie's amazing tree house. We surfed VRBO (HomeAway) looking for a unique experience for this year's trip, came across the Tree House, and knew that was where we wanted to stay, so it was off to Osa for us. You don't have to be a bird and wildlife enthusiast to enjoy this location - just go, relax and enjoy cocktails in the most amazing house you've ever stayed in! We loved every minute - and the pictures do not do it justice. Our only regret is that it did not rain (really) as we wanted to enjoy it from our tree. We were close enough to beach life and other attractions (need a car) yet tucked away in the rain forest in a remote but safe location. We were surprised to know that there had been other visitors in a house nearby - we had no idea anyone else was there - it was totally private - especially reassuring when using the outdoor shower! A truly fantastic vacation. Tree House bucket list, check! Now, how can we possibly top this next year?

Absolutely amazing – beyond our wildest hopes !

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 glorious weeks with our extended family at the Lapa house. The house was fabulous, the Osa peninsula has more than enough to offer for active, enthusiastic, outdoor people & everyone went out of their way to make our stay memorable. Waking up at dawn in a bedroom perched in the jungle watching the squirrel monkeys moving through the trees was just an extra.

The house is even better than the photos; more than enough space for 12 adults, very well appointed & comfortable – I don’t think we found anything lacking. The attention to detail in the layout/design just kept surprising – the bathrooms are the best ! Because it is so open, it feels like you are outside – you don’t have to leave the living room to watch birds. The added advantage was that it caught the breezes which kept it a bit cooler & when that was not enough, a dip in the plunge-pool was very pleasant. Even the internet was up a good part of the time.

We also took advantage of the cook service offered; Gilberto & Ana cannot be faulted in any way for the genuine care they took of us – on top of that, the food was excellent – lots of fresh fruit & vegetables; local dishes & the best cakes & cookies for dessert. Thank-you Gilberto & Ana !

The Puerto Jimenez area has a lot to offer for the outdoor enthusiast; provided you are good with the heat & some bumpy roads. We hiked in Corcovado (saw lots of animals) & in an ecological reserve (more reptiles & creatures), went on boat tours in the gulf, zip-lined, visited a cocoa farm, kayaked in the mangrove swamps, sampled all the beaches within striking distance & concluded that Matopolo has the best. Nothing tops lazing in the warm Pacific watching the Macaws overhead & the Pelicans fishing around you.

Jungle holiday beginners

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the jungle we were pure novices so all the advice, help and planning was brilliant from Blondie and Mike before we arrived. Once we arrived we certainly were well looked after by

Gilberto and Ana who cooked amazing meals and were always bright cheerful and helpful. The weather was amazingly hot and humid and the house we stayed in was enormous and fabulously windowless with a great view to the bay. The only downside is that the lower bedrooms and bathrooms need a complete revamp. A 4x4 is definitely a must as the roads warrant it. The beaches and sea is breathtaking. I was surprised there weren't more animals but enjoyed what we saw. However, on saying that I didn't go to the Corcovado jungle as I struggled with the humidity. The area is an unspoilt which adds to the Costa Rician charm. Everyone is friendly, it's better to pitch up at the activities such as chocolate farm, zip wire as it is cheaper than purchasing through an agent in the town. Blondie didn't previously book anything for us in hindsight we should have booked the world famous biologist and done the night walk. The best gift shop is Jagua by the airport and the first restaurant on the harbour front (a bit scruffy but excellent service and food). Loved it X

Owner's Response: Hola Meryl & Ian Thanks so much for taking time to write such a nice review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for feedback on the lower 2 bedrooms. These 2 bedrooms are where the kids and singles generally stay. We are changing the set up so that there are more options for couples besides one king bed on the first floor (there currently can be as many as 4 kings in the entire house- one is on the first level). So we are adding a queen and another double in the larger room. But when we do have couples, the king bed is great! And now couples will have a queen rather than a double in the other room. We are also adding another shower and bathroom for holidays 2016. We'd love to have you another time- We have a nice discount for return guests! Mike and I hope you took home warm tropical memories of your 2 weeks with us. Pura Vida Blondie

This is a bucket list item!

  • 5 of 5

I researched tree houses because it has been my wife's childhood dream to live in a treehouse now completed in a grand style! I chose this because even though a 4 wheel drive is needed to access the property, once there it is an easy walk & the privacy is beyond private - only saw someone when I had a couple questions , otherwise one could live like Tarzan and Jane - which we did! It was awesome- just as the view of the jungle, monkeys, tropical birds & floria. Although living in the "open" canopy (no walls) may seem primitive, having electricity for a fridge, fans, wifi, hot running water makes this place seem like a paradise jungle canopy well work checking it off your bucket list even if it was never on ( but it should be)

Also visit the coco farm which Blondie's help we had an awesome informative tour. We are in our 60's and enjoyed every second / wishing we could have spend more time and discovered this sooner when put children were still home as this is a must do experience.

Unique chance to commune with nature

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Lapa's Home in January with our two teenage sons, and I can say without doubt that I've never stayed in a house so interesting and creative, nor one that allows such close contact with nature. The living room, dining area, and kitchen are open air, and it was not uncommon for a giant butterfly to flutter through as we were hanging out on the couch. Each day, we watched monkeys swing through the canopy just feet away from us, and we spent a whole morning watching a mama sloth moving like molasses through a tree right beside the living room, her baby clamped like a starfish to her belly. Masses of macaws, toucans, and scores of other birds flew around (and occasionally through!) the house each day.

This open air living is not for everyone, but if you want to experience the wildlife of the Osa, this is the place. The experience is edgy in the very best way--you're not looking at the jungle through double-paned glass in a climate-controlled hotel room, you're living right in it. During cicada season (which is when we were there), that means dealing with the nearby racket of cicadas and occasionally having them dive bomb you at night when they're drawn to the house lights. For me, that kind of experience is a plus--making the tropical experience real and not some kind of Disney fabrication.

We loved the little swimming pool, accessed by its toad-proof stepping stones. We loved the many artistic touches throughout the house created by Michael and Blondie, who were helpful and friendly and gave wonderful tips on where to go and what to do. Our stay there was truly memorable!

Seclusion in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My husband and teenage kids stayed at the Lapa's home for 3 nights. This was the first stop to starting our vacation. We were looking for a private place that gave us the opportunity to relax and be summerged with nature. This is absolutely the place to be.

The private secluded road to this place is an adventure by itself, which is about 1/2 mile from the main road. You enter the jungle in a narrow dirt road climbing up into the property. When we arrived there, the grounds, the home and the view were breathtaking. Manicured grounds surrounded the front of the property and a jungle bordered the rest. We were welcomed by Wilberg, the inn keeper who was very friendly. We arrived late in the afternoon, and to our surprise, it was the time that the monkeys came out to feed. We saw at least 10 monkey's on our first day there including a mama with her baby in her back.

The view of this home is outstanding! You can see the ocean from afar. I made a point to get up during sunrise at about 5 to 5:30 AM. Toucans, lapas, and many other birds, flew by and made their calling, the whole jungle seemed to be amazing experience. Lots of butterflies (blue especially) and hummingbirds.

The house was as it is showed on the picture. I actually think that the pictures don't do justice to its beauty. It is an open plan, which means that you dont have walls keeping insects from visiting the premises and the heat and cool breezes surround you in the main gathering areas. There are fans and screened rooms to keep the bugs out, and 1 room with air conditioning. The pool was a great plus!

There are 3 bedrooms with plenty of beds. The carpentry, woodworking using local trees is amazing. The imagination that these owners used to make this home is outstanding. The art in the home is their own creation and very beautiful.

The proprerty is closed to Puerto Jimenez. We shopped for groceries, and cooked dinner and breakfast at the home. We also walked the trials that are in the property and it was like a miniature Corcovado. The beaches and rivers are closed by and there are plenty of restaurants and adventures for the whole family.

You have choices as to where to stay and we stayed at some beautiful resorts with all the comforts that you can think off afterwards in Costa Rica, but this home tops it all as far as experiencing living with nature and having your own little solutide for at least a few days!
