Hatteras Island is a unique vacation destination. It has it all! The Island is a barrier island with miles of untouched beaches as 80% of the island cannot be developed but has pristine woods, marshes and bird preserves all of which are worth seeing. See the historic Chicamacomico Life Saving station in Rodanthe, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton, the famous 'Canadian Hole' in Avon, capitol of wind and kite surfing on the East Coast, and the many small shops and restaurants on the island. Take a 40 minute ferry ride to Ocracoke Island and see the wild ponies, explore the picturesque harbor and small women's and craft shops on the island, see the famous British cemetery actually part of England, and visit the Ocracoke
lighthouse. If fishing is your sport, charter a deep sea boat for tuna, cobia, wahoo, mackeral, mahi-mahi and other Gulf Stream fish, or fish off one of island fishing piers, fish in the Sound or just surf cast off the beach for blues, croakers, drum and flounder. The Carolina Clipper provided our extended family a wonderful week of fun and relaxation. The home was spacious, clean and a very well supplied kitchen with everything you could need to prepare a feast every day. There was plenty of bathroom space for a large group. We had great space to gather as a family as well as retreat to privacy when wanted. We watched every sunrise either from the captain's watch or on the beach just a short walk out the door. We watched the dolphins, played games, read on the deck, played in the waves, walked the beach, visited local restaurants and places of historical significance, took hang gliding lessons, etc. The beach was beautiful and the waves very fun without anything hurting your feet. There are many, many things nearby to explore: eating, hang gliding, various water sports, shopping, strolling through quaint towns, etc. Above everything, the owner Jim was great to deal with. Very patient with questions, quick to answer and happy to give suggestions to make your stay the best it can be. We loved our stay in Outer Banks and would go back to the Carolina Clipper if ever traveling there again. Our group ranged from age 17-86 and was perfect for all.
We stayed at the Carolina Clipper during August 18-26 and had a wonderful time! Highlights of the house for us were the great room (kitchen/family room area) and the deck. The Carolina Clipper is a terrific choice for groups that need separate bedrooms but want to spend their daytime hours hanging out together. Everything was in perfect working order, even the hot tub, which is usually a hit or miss at vacation rentals. Also, the owner was extremely helpful in suggesting activities in the area and in helping us extend our stay. One suggestion for the neighborhood as a whole -- if there is a way to keep the paths to the beach from flooding when there is heavy rain that would be great. All in all, a wonderful vacation property!
We just returned from a wonderful week at the Carolina Clipper. The house was large and accomodating for my whole family, including 3 small children and 2 dogs. The deck off the living room with the hottub was where we spent most of our time (if we weren't on the beach) and the view from ther was beautiful. From there we saw families of little jack rabbits in the dunes, which was a surprise. But we also could see the sunrise at dawn and the amazing constellations at night from there. It was absolutely beautiful! One word of advise... when walking to the beach, stay on the sandy path! There are crazy, thorny cactus plants just inches from the path, so keep your eyes peeled. Also, if you go to the beach in the early hours before the sun gets too hot, bring shoes with you!! The sand will scald your feet later in the day, mark my words! The only gripe I have about this amazing house is that there is no recycling service. We're very "green" people and it was really hard to put all our bottles and cans into the landfill trashcans... Other than that it was absolutely perfect! And the owners, with whom I corresponded extensively before our arrival, seem to be wonderful people as well. I highly recommend the Carolina Clipper! Enjoy your vacation!!!
We just returned from this great home and wanted to say THANK YOU for a great visit. The house is great with easy access to the beach and a great view of the ocean. We brought along our three daughters and found the outside shower (with hot and cold water!) to be a big help with our little ones after returning from the beach. We also liked the fact that the bedrooms are all on the same floor so that we were never too far away from the kids - yet still had peace and privacy of our own. We loved star gazing from the deck at night while listening to the sounds of the waves crashing below. It was so clear we could see the Milky Way! The beach is one of the most beautiful we've seen. Even on the busy Memorial Weekend holiday it was almost empty, and the surf break was incredible with an actual pipeline!!! There were also great sandbar/shallow areas for the kids to play safely so everyone was happy. The owner was gracious and helpful. We will definitely be back!
My husband and I along with our 3 dogs spent from 4/26-5/7 and had a wonderful time. You couldn't ask for more peace and quiet. We walked the beach, through the neighborhood and had relaxing naps on the deck. Everything you needed to cook was there, the beds were extremely comfortable, Screened Porch was a great area for the dogs to nap on the cool afternoon and evenings. The gas grill was not working when we arrived and the Handyman came within an hour of calling him. He had it fixed right away and we used it every day. The hot tub was well maintained and checked by the service man twice while we were there to make sure the chemicals were balanced. The local shops were great and the main grocery store was only about 15 minutes away and it was a wonderful drive along the water to get there. We traveled up to Nags Head for dinner, about 25 minutes north, and also dined at a few of the local restaurants. We had the beach to ourselves, it was great not seeing anyone around, it was like being on a private island. Highly recommend if you want to get away from it all. The owner was great to deal with plus his follow up and attention to details was great. We had everything we needed from him before we even left home. I am recommending to others who want to visit the area.
This is the ideal place to have a family vacation. Plenty of room for a large family. There were a few little things that need a little TLC in the house, but that is to be expected in a home exposed to the elements of the coastal region. One thing that disappointed me was that the jacuzzi tub in the shared master bath did not work. But over all we had a great experience. The children could walk to the beach and I didn't have to worry about them crossing traffic. Or we could jump in the van and ride down a few miles to enjoy the public access to the sound. There is piers nearby for fishing and a few places to shop. Good family fun!!
