Pastures old

Once upon a long time ago, London was less buses and Beefeaters, more furrowed fields. And it’s still possible to beat a path back to the bucolic. On a picturesque tree-lined street, here is a home as tranquil as a thatched summerhouse. You’ve woodland wallpaper and sunny floorboards, original artwork and polished period dressing tables, old wirelesses and acres of classic paperbacks. And if the heart of every sleepy village is its green, you’ll be looking for buttercups in the open plan kitchen and TV snug. Just make sure you toddle down the lane to Islington’s too.

Countryphiles

Your hosts divide their days between the English capital and the French countryside. She works for a famed auction house, he runs a visual effects and animation company, and together they adore everything about their location – be it the Regent’s Canal or the antiquer’s mecca at Camden Passage.

Will-o'-the-wisp

Let the city bustle as it will: this is a retreat of leafy peace. The artwork is both original and everywhere, while florals give way to formals – a splendid old armchair here, a radiant shuttered window there. Downstairs, you’ve a contemporary kitchen and living area that owes much to the arboreal.

A garden gleams through floor-to-ceiling windows, where you might tend the barbecue or drowse away the afternoon on the dinky lawn. And do share a nightcap on the master bedroom’s characterful little balcony, or at one of the fantastic neighbourhood pubs.

About Owner / Property Manager

onefinestay gives you the chance to stay in someone's place while they're out of town. You get to live their life for a few days and nights.

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room. And there's service to match.

Nobody wants to be a tourist, so our homes come with recommendations from the people who live in them. For everything else, we're here 24/7.

Why Owner / Property Manager chose London

Islington is famous, infamous even, as the stomping ground of the sharper-elbowed sort of North London intelligentsia (the older, more decorous variety prefer Hampstead). Tony Blair famously ushered in his premiership from his home on Richmond Crescent in leafy Barnsbury while his famous deal with Gordon Brown took place at the nearby and now defunct Granita.

Islington is literary London’s favoured address but also home to bankers who can get their expensive German saloons (or, increasingly, expensive Italian bicycles) into the City in minutes.

The area is essentially comprised of the long boutique and café-crammed stretch of Upper Street, which ends at Highbury Corner at the north end and the Angel at the South, flanked by the leafy Georgian squares and streets of Barnsbury and Canonbury. Essex Road is Upper Street’s shabbier tributary but that has become slightly smarter in recent years.

Ten years ago Upper Street itself was in danger of becoming an undistinguished strip of chain pubs and restaurants – a bland every High Street – but that trend has been reversed and though there are more Starbucks on the street than seems feasible, there are also plenty of more interesting hang-outs. In retail terms there are a number of good independent boutiques, particularly at the north end of Upper Street. Camden Passage, once a run of antique dealers, now has cafes and vintage clothes stores to the mix.

What makes this house unique

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too.

Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities.

Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand.

And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.

Notes:
A welcome pack will be provided on arrival and an iPhone will be available for you during the duration of your stay. Home truths: There is no microwave in this home. This home is spread across four floors so there are lots of stairs from top to bottom. This house is home to a loveable cat, who will be in the home during bookings. However, your hosts will arrange for someone to come and care for it during your visit. Unfortunately, the fireplace in the sitting room is not available for guests to use during their stay.
