Welcome to our backyard oasis, a quiet little guest cottage hideaway in the center of West Los Angeles, a great location for you to use as your home base while visiting Southern California for business or pleasure. With rustic old-world details, including three pairs of French doors, stucco walls, open-beamed ceiling and stone, the cottage is well appointed for comfort and utility, serving your needs for a visit of a few days or several weeks. The kitchenette is fully stocked with cooking utensils and basics, including a toaster oven, refrigerator, microwave and more. Enjoy a bright, clean bathroom with custom stone shower, tankless water heater (never run out of hot water) and three shower heads. Furnished with a full-size bed and a sun-drenched oversized day bed (that expands to a king-size bed when needed), both dressed with soft linens and down duvets, plus dining table and chairs, 40-inch smart TV, and air conditioning, this cottage interior offers so much more than most hotels. Separated from the main house by a 5 foot concrete wall and wooden gate, the cottage is located next to an in-ground stone swimming pool with waterfall and 20-foot concrete slide, large stone hot tub, and Mediterranean landscaping: Orange trees, rosemary, lavender and tea roses abound, creating a fragrant retreat that will make you feel like you're in Southern France or Italy! Use the outdoor kitchen, equipped with a bar-height counter and chairs, high-end stainless steel gas grill with side burners, plus large French door fridge and outdoor sink, to barbecue poolside or relax with a glass of wine. Close to freeways, you can easily get to Disney, Magic Mountain, The Getty and Universal. But be within walking distance to cool little spots: Great shops and cafes, Little Osaka's hipster foodie hub, the restaurants on Pico and Ocean Park Blvd., and the Light Rail which takes you to the Santa Monica Pier (beach) in 8 minutes or downtown in 25.

About Beth Salmon
I'm a creative and mom of two kids. I've been a book publisher, editor in chief of health magazines and even a screenwriter. I love movies, especially "Under the Tuscan Sun," which—truth be told—is what inspired a serious property renovation. Since we couldn't move to Italy, I asked my husband Milo to convert our house into one that made us feel like we were on a vacation there every day. My husband Milo is a mechanical engineer, history/political science buff—and was once the stand-in for Sean Connery on the movie "The Rock." Born in Prague, Milo has toured more than 75 countries. His best souvenirs, though, are the great stories he brings back. Ask him about the time we were stranded on a glacier in Iceland, or the giant sea crocodile he ran into on a lonely stretch of beach on the island of Langkawi (the croc gets bigger every time he tells this story). You may notice a large three-axle military truck in our driveway. Check out the inside: It has a comfy hipster camper cabin in the back. With a table, banquette and kitchenette, it offers a mobile cabana for families or individuals to use at the beach as their home base. Ask about how to rent it by the day or half-day. Read a book, relax, change into your bathing suit, enjoy lunch without sand, store drinks. It's very handy. Currently, we park it next to the sand in Venice and Malibu.

Why Beth Salmon chose Mar Vista
We chose our home because of its location and its potential to become our dream home. When we renovated the entire property a few years ago, we turned what was a California bungalow into a stone farmhouse that you might see in Italy or France! We even have a chicken that free-ranges in parts of the yard. (She's very friendly!) We also converted our liner pool into an eco-friendly state of the art stone pool and added a 20 foot concrete slide that kids love. We also love this area, which is close to everything the West Side has to offer, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Starbucks, Marshall's, foodie spots on Sawtelle, Pico and Ocean Park Boulevards, and even the beach (it's only four stops west on the Light Rail). And yet, our area still feels like a hidden, diverse enclave in the middle of a very big city. Kids scooter up and down the street here, our local elementary is French Immersion and all the neighbors know each other.
What makes this Guest House unique
There are so many unique touches added to our house that it's hard to name them all. In effort to create our old-world European dreamscape, we've added Mediterranean plants, gravel, arched doorways and stone walkways, patios and facades. The backyard is lush and private with mature orange trees, tea roses and hedge trees. The pool is made of stone and has a lovely slide and cascading waterfall. The hot tub is made of concrete and stone—it's not plastic—and uses an eco-friendly cleaning system (copper and silver ions and an ozonator) which makes the water very healthy for the skin, hair and body. You will feel as if you've escaped the hustle and bustle of the city when you are here. And yet, you can easily access sights or the freeways to conveniently reach them: Disneyland, Universal, The Getty, Staples Center, beaches (Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu), museums, hiking trails and more!

Beautiful cozy cottage
The home is in a fun and pretty neighborhood. The pool and grounds are really an escape. The hosts were very friendly. The cottage was cute and cozy, fit three of us very comfortably. I’d recommend this for other travelers. The location is central to so much fun stuff. We really enjoyed our stay.
Such a wonderful experience! Beth and Milo have a fantastic set up - provided everything we needed. Highly recommend!
A restful refuge.
I just spent two nights at this property. It is charming, well appointed, and comfortable. I really just used the cottage as a crash pad, but would have been happy to spend more time as it is quiet and private. Milo, the owner, was very hospitable. I highly recommend this cottage.
Secluded spot in a convenient location
What a peaceful retreat. Quiet and rustic, impeccably clean. Close to Santa Monica and Westwood. Walked to dinner one night and felt perfectly safe.
Milo is kind and interesting. Was quite helpful. The coffee he provided was great.
Pleased to stay. Would stay there again.
Would recommend :)
Very quaint and affordable place to stay if you want to be near (but not in the middle of) L.A. My daughter and I used Mar Vista as a home base for visiting prospective colleges in the area and were thankful for its proximity to I-405. It literally is just a couple blocks from the freeway entrance. And yet, it is in a residential area so it's quiet and private. The accommodations were lovely with a rustic Tuscan character. I slept on the day bed and my daughter slept on the full sized bed and we both were very comfortable. Thank you Beth and Milo for your hospitality!
Beautiful setting, great location
We only had a couple days & nights in SoCal and needed to be bear both Malibu and Universal Studios - this location was in a great area. The setting was beautiful, hot tub wonderful, and hosts gracious. Would definitely try to come back again!
