The Infinity pool is a stunning feature of the property and with the environmentally friendly solar heating, the pool can be enjoyed at all times of the year. Princess Margaret Beach is the nicest beach on the Island. Pristine and uncrowded and a short 20 - 25 minute walk down the road. A few parts of the road are steep. Most people walk down to town, the restaurants or the beach and catch a taxi back. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Some guests walk both ways and some guests hire a car for a few days to explore the Island. Princess Margaret Beach is ideal for children and adults alike. It is very safe with turquoise blue, warm, calm waters. The beach is stunning with lovely white powdery sand. There is a very nice restaurant on the beach and there are numerous other restaurants and bars on the island. Snorkelling is good on both points at either end of the beach.
The Bequia board-walk is now complete allowing you to walk from the beach at Lower Bay over a small headland onto the stunning Princess Margaret Beach. You can then walk over Princess Margaret Beach to the next headland which now has a spectacular board-walk suspended from the rock face. This connects to the Belmont Walkway, passing several bars, restaurants, the two local dive shops, various small shops and cafes and eventually leads into town.
Local 'Dollar' buses travel the main routes with cheap fares to match the name. Taxi's are cheap and plentiful and our 3 local taxi companies provide fixed fares around the Island. Example fares are around 7 US to Princess Margaret Beach or 9 US into town (up to 4 people). We also offer our very own car hire service from $35 US per day.
Tropical Hideaway has without doubt some of the finest rooms on Bequia, and coupled with the spectacular panoramic ocean views and the beautiful evening sunsets, you soon realize you are enjoying, what many say, are the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia.
Our desire is to fulfill your dream and on that basis we invite you to read our individual room offerings and discover which of our amazing boutique style accommodations you prefer the most. We know you will enjoy the experience.
We originally arrived in the Caribbean in 1996 after making a 3 week transatlantic crossing aboard our sailing yacht 'Rainbow Spirit'. This was the beginning of another adventure and after sailing and exploring the Caribbean Islands for 2 years we eventually bought a 2 acre plot of land on the Island of Bequia. Having already committed to a world circumnavigation, we set sail again in 1998, went through the Panama Canal and spent the next three years travelling around the world with our three daughters. Although we visited hundreds of white sand, sun-drenched tropical islands, we found none of them compared to the special beauty and charm of Bequia. We returned in 2001 and finally made a start on building our 'Tropical Hideaway'.
Building in the Caribbean was never going to be easy and after the frustrations of 2 years turning into 3 years and 3 years turning into 4 years we finally finished construction in 2011. Eight years of full time building and a cost overrun of around 300%. The project was huge, far bigger than we ever imagined, but our hard work, frustrations, pain and suffering eventually paid off and we now have a remarkable property often quoted as having 'the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia'.
Our daughters have now left to start their own lives and adventures, returning when time and funds allow. Our eldest daughter is now married and lives in New Zealand. Our middle daughter started the first Spa's and treatment centres on Bequia and is now employed by the rich and famous from all over the world. Our youngest daughter is currently working at a safari lodge in a remote part of Zambia and returns to Tropical Hideaway for the December to April season where she offers her spa treatments and therapy work. As you can see, our wanderlust lifestyle has left a lasting impression on our daughters and they are all enjoying an adventurous and exciting life as we have done.
Martin & Julie Mansfield purchased this cottage in 1998
Bequia truly is a unique Island. Large enough to be interesting and exciting, yet small enough to retain its local charm and uniqueness that only a small off the beaten track Caribbean Island can offer. It truly is an undiscovered paradise that some well known travel journalists are only just discovering and several well known newspapers and magazines have recently published articles and all describe Bequia as an undiscovered paradise, about to be discovered.
Specializing in couples and small groups we offer an informal, private and relaxed atmosphere and we pride ourselves with our genuine friendly service and the experience we afford our guests.Tropical Hideaway has one of the finest hillside locations on Bequia and coupled with the incredible heated Infinity edge pool, the spectacular panoramic ocean views & the beautiful evening sunsets, you soon realize you are enjoying, what many say, are the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia. The views are simply amazing and are forever changing as ships and yachts of all sizes and nationalities pass by on their journeys and adventures.

We stayed at Tropical Hideaway in December spending 6 nights in Hibiscus Cottage and 5 in the Penthouse. I couldn't tell you which one to stay in as they are both perfection in their own way. Hibiscus Cottage is completely private, down some steps from the beautiful Infinity pool. There is a seating area as you go in with an internet TV which the owners have packed full of all the latest movies and TV Series. Although the panoramic views across the bay will keep you more than occupied. The kitchen area has everything you will need. Spotless shower room with plenty of shampoo shower gels etc. There are mosquito screens to all windows, which gave my partner piece of mind. There is even a washing line behind the cottage to hang your swimsuits out. The food and beverage pack is five star. Numbers for taxis, takeaways, local restaurants, places to see are all listed in the cottage. Martin and Julie the attentive but unobtrusive owners have thought of everything. I cant imagine anyone ever wants to leave.
Tropical Hideaway consists of 5 separate luxury accommodations, the Penthouse Suite, Hibiscus & Palm Cottage, the Pool House and the Infinity Studio. If Hibiscus Cottage is not available please have a look at the identical Palm Cottage or one of our other lovely accommodations, or visit our comprehensive website tropicalhideawaybequia.com for full details and availability.
Hibiscus Cottage is in my opinion the most private on the property it has an amazing view and is very well appointed for your needs. You are surrounded by jaw dropping views, beautiful landscape and architecture. The hosts Martin and Julie are a pleasure so many kind words to say about them. Tropical Hideway is and will always be our only choice for accommodation. Perfect Place on a Perfect Island.
Indescribable views! So incredibly peaceful and exactly what we were looking for!
The Hibiscus cottage is the best after the penthouse. It is so quaint, with a panoramic view and complete privacy. Everything was well thought, with quality eco-friendly products, an incredible entertainment centre (HD super large flat TV screen) with a huge selection of movies and excellent choice of music). The infinity pool is a dream to float around be it in the morning, for sunset or a late swim with the colorful LED lighting! Julie and Martin, the hosts, were consistently graceful and obliging to any request we had. A must come back place, for sure!
We were looking for relaxation in a beautiful location and boy did we find it.
Bequia is a glorious, unspoilt island with palm fringed beaches, turquoise seas and friendly, welcoming people -none more welcoming than Julie and Martin who built Tropical Hideaway as a labour of love over many years and created a development of five excellent self catering units located around the most wonderful infinity pool you are ever likely to see.
We stayed in Hibiscus which is located below the pool down a number of steps through the tropical garden filled with flowers and wildlife. The cottage is spacious and very well equipped with everything you need including a sophisticated TV and sound system with a massive range of music and excellent films (we mostly listened to the music but we did find time to watch a couple of good films). We did not need to use the air conditioning and kept sufficiently cool with the large fan.
The balcony has stunning views both in the day and at night when the harbour scene beneath the moon and stars was very romantic. The occasional blast of reggae music coming up from the harbour and from the local buses gave sitting on the balcony a truly Caribbean feel.
Cooking facilities are basic with two gas rings and a microwave but we found these to be more than adequate as we ate out on most lunchtimes and took advantage of Martin's excellent home cooking available in the well stocked shop by the office which also kept us fully supplied with wine, beers and, of course, Martin's famous rum punch. While we were there Martin and Julie were experimenting with breakfasts and we took advantage of this on most mornings. They were deliciously cooked and served with a smile by Shenila who made us very welcome and also did a great job of our laundry. Don't count on there being breakfast available when you visit as much depends on how successful the experiment is but, if it is still available, it's highly recommended and a very relaxing start to the day without the hassle of washing up.
The cottage was kept beautifully clean with regular maid service and change of linen and towels and the gardens were tended almost constantly by the gardener Marlon throughout the stay.
We love walking and managed to walk an average of around four miles each day. The walk up (and down) to Tropical Hideaway is extremely steep but there are steps being constructed at the moment which will make the walk easier. Walking on Bequai is the best way to see the island.
The property itself almost defies description, it is perched on the top of the hill with a view that is unmatched by any I have ever seen. Hibiscus cottage was built with total privacy in mind and has a large outdoor deck perfectly situated to watch over the harbour. The infinity pool and pool deck with pool bar and day bed are all laid out with the guests in mind and maintained in pristine condition. It is hard to imagine how it could be any better.Martin and Julie are wonderful hosts and have thought of everything. Thank you so much to you both.

All we hoped for and more. Martin and Julie have an amazing place, their attention to detail is superb. The grounds are beautiful and the pool area makes it's extremely hard to ever want to leave the Hideaway. We stayed 12 nights in the Hibiscus Cottage and were blown away. The online pictures do the place absolute justice but being there in person is even better. Not one negative thing to point out, it was all we hoped for and truly MORE. We travel quite a bit and this is definitely the best vacation we have had, will be hard to top this place.
Beautiful Bequia (pronounced bek way) is an undiscovered paradise, the Caribbean of 20 years ago. Covering an area of only 7 square miles, Bequia lies in the warm tropical waters of the Caribbean Sea. It is just a short plane hop from the ever popular Barbados and next to the renowned Mustique, both favourite islands of the rich and famous. It is the largest of the Grenadine islands known also as the ‘jewels of the Caribbean’ and is blessed with several pristine, white sandy beaches many of which are totally natural and undeveloped.
If you want resort hotels, nightclubs and beaches full of sunbeds, don't come to Bequia. If you want to discover the undiscovered, visit our beautiful Island, enjoy the uncrowded pristine white sandy beaches, swim and snorkel in our safe and warm Caribbean waters and experience the genuine friendliness of the local Bequian people.
Bequia is an all year round destination with daytime temperatures consistently averaging between 24C (75F) and 30C (86F) throughout the year. A "chilly" evening in the winter months (January to March) might see a low of around 22C (72F) and in the summer months the temperature will occasionally reach 32C (90F). Trade winds bring cooling breezes for most of the year and the famous Christmas Winds bring stronger breezes and livelier seas, perfect for the keen sailor.
The "dry" season from December to May coincides with the "high" season for visitors, with clear sunny skies, low humidity and minimal rainfall. The Island is totally reliant on rain for its water, so the arrival of the "rainy" season in May/June is always a blessing. The warmer, summer months of May to November are a welcome mixture of occasional showers, sunshine and light breezes, with the isolated heavy downpour. Showers are usually short and mainly come in the night.
Bequia is far south in the hurricane belt, and although tropical storms will occasionally approach in the peak months of August to October, most disturbances either pass to the north or dissipate before they reach the Grenadine Islands chain.
Please note the so called “rainy season” is not a particularly reliable statement any more as the seasons have become very mixed and variable. The weather forecast for our part of the Caribbean typically states, ‘Sunshine with a mix of cloud and occasional showers’. It does reflect the changing climate and weather patterns and seems to be accurate for most of the year. At least the forecaster can never get it wrong.
Having two dive shops and around 24 dive sites, Bequia is a divers paradise. Our diverse marine environment includes relaxing reefs, wall dives, drift dives and even a few wrecks. You can still dive and snorkel away from the crowds in crystal clear waters with reefs that are still pristine. Our abundant and diverse sea life ranges from 100’s of species of Tropical Fish, Octopus, Sea Turtles and Sea Horses to name but a few. Bequia has it all and will satisfy beginners trying out snorkelling, scuba divers who wish to take a Padi course and experienced divers wishing to go on an exhilarating dive. Looking for an adventure? Try Discover Scuba with one of our two dive shops and enjoy a shallow reef dive with one of their experienced instructors.
