Little Red Boat House (Cottage)

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Also know as the 'Little Red Cottage' it was originally built as a boathouse and features a deck across the front that overhangs the water's edge. Step off the deck onto the dock, and jump into the beautiful turquoise Little Traverse Lake.

You can enjoy an unusual amount of privacy due to the property being bordered by vacant wooded lots on both sides.

A sandy, gradual sloping lake bottom makes for great wading and swimming. Little Traverse Lake fishing includes bass, perch and pike. Boat traffic is relatively low, even on holiday weekends.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Park borders the north side of Little Traverse Lake (LRBH, is on the south side) To access hiking trails through the park to Good Harbor Bay on Lake Michigan, drive around the northwest end of the lake to Little Traverse Lake boat launch where there is parking. The trails begin on the north side of the road.

Bring your own bedding/linens and towels. One queen and a full size futon. We also encourage recycling and offer recycle bins.

The Boathouse is just a block from M22, (convenience store/eatery) and Little Traverse Inn (restaurant/pub). Wineries, golf courses, art galleries, etc. are minutes away by car. It's approximately 9 miles south to Glen Arbor and about the same, North to Leland.

Sleeping Bear Dunes was voted 'Most Beautiful Place in America', on Good Morning America in 2011. The famous dune climb is about 15 minutes away, just passed Glen Arbor.

This Boathouse is conveniently located in Leelanau County:

5 minutes to Maple City

10 minutes to Leland

10 minutes to Glen Arbor

20 minutes to Sleeping Bear Dune Climb

35 minutes to Traverse City

About Cheri Borns

Randy and Cheri have owned property in Leelanau County for 23 years. We have enjoyed the landscape, community and social aspects of this area. Randy is an artist and Cheri's passion is culinary, so this area has a lot to offer in that regard. The wineries are very unique with great choices of wines. This area reminds us of a mini California. We are very active people so Leelanau Peninsula suits us very well. From bicycling the large hills to downhill and cross country skiing. Hiking is beautiful in the National parks that surrounds the pristine Lake Michigan. And of course playing in Little Traverse Lake, so refreshing and is one of the cleanest inland lakes in Michigan. So come and explore and experience something special, we are sure you will not be disappointed.

Cheri Borns purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Cheri Borns chose Northern Michigan

Every time we go to the Little Red Boathouse it's such a retreat. We never tire of sitting on the deck of the Boathouse for a meal or gazing. And at night the stars are unbelievable. Download the app 'Starlight' to your phone, it will outline and describe all the stars and planets in the sky. Satellites are easy to spot as they pass by due to no light pollution.

Whether we stay put at the Boathouse or head out to explore, it's so easy to relax when you are here. After a decade and a half, we are still discovering this paradise.

The boathouse is perfect for adult getaways, however, it's not suitable for children. The uniqueness of the boathouse is filled with antiques and the vicinity of the property is close to M22 and very close to the waters edge.

What makes this cottage unique

Leelanau peninsula, the pinky of the 'mitten' state, is truly like no other place in the midwest. The reasons are many: vast beaches, dunes, panoramic views, wineries, breweries, quaint towns, art galleries, farm markets, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, Manitou Islands, turquoise lakes, etc., etc.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Cheri,

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful use of your

cottage! It was a perfect location and accommodations couldn't have

better. Loved how there was not a detail left untouched. I posted a pic

on my Facebook and I had multiple friends inquire. I have given them all

the vrbo number.

We will return some day.

Sincerely, Katie

Wonderful for an weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

The Borns thought of everything. This Little Red Boathouse is oozing with character. Cheri really thought of everything. The kitchen wants for nothing (maybe a slightly less complex coffee machine). No need to bring things like a tea kettle or water filter pitcher, they are there. All of the kitchen utensils that any vacation cook could need. Ice trays in the freezer.

The fire pit set up is perfect. The outdoor area has benches, chairs and a picnic table. Any or all of them great for lounging and taking in the beauty of the lake, morning coffee or evening drinks.

There are a plethora of board games to choose from. There is a wealth of information on local places to eat and see.

We had a lovely weekend away at the Little Red Boathouse. We'll definitely be returning in the future.

Such a relaxing cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time with our quick stay at the cottage! It has to be one of the most relaxing places we have ever been. The lake is gorgeous and the sound of the water is so peaceful. The home is so charming and clean! They make great use of the small space and everything you could need is there. It truly does feel like home when you are there. The drive to Leland and Glen Arbor was so beautiful and so close to the house. We would recommend this cottage without hesitation to anyone looking to get away and have some R&R with friends or family.

Perfect location for a girls getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My mom, sister and I stayed at the boathouse for a five day girls getaway and this is the perfect cottage and location! You are right in the middle of the many beautiful sites, beaches and quaint towns the area offers. The boathouse is absolutely perfect! From the moment you walk in the door, you are surrounded by vintage treasures, comfort and calm. My favorite up north treasure!

Great getaway for family of fou

  • 5 of 5

Myself, wife, and two sons (age 3 and 6) enjoyed four days and three nights at the LRBH this past June. The place was nicely decorated and very clean. The LRBH was not very large but more than met our needs. We spent each morning climbing and exploring the dunes. We enjoyed downtown Leland and Glen Arbor during the days. We swam in the lake and enjoyed s'mores by the fire each night. We would recommend Cedar Sol Hydroponic Farm for their taco stand one day, the Village Cheese Shanty in Leland for a deliscious sandwich and the Hop Lot in Suttons Bay for a good bite to eat and a beer.

For those with children: the property doesn't have much space between the front door and M22 (maybe three car lengths or so) and the lake is immediately off the back deck of the house. The owner states this in the description and reiterated that to me before I booked. I appreciated her genuine compassion for my family's well being. The proximity of the road and lake were NOT an issue for my family.

Great location: located almost directly between Glen Arbor and Leland.

For runners: I ran a nice 5.5 mile run around the lake one afternoon. Busy on M22 but not at all on littler traverse lake rd.

Little Slice of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The Little Red Boathouse was perfect for our honeymoon! It was such a cute little place and it had plenty of room for the 2 of us. The location of the LRB was on point for any sort of activity that northern Michigan had to offer. We loved getting to shop in Glen Arbor, wine tasting on Old Mission Peninsula, and hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes. The owners were so quick to respond and made the whole process so easy. We highly recommend staying at the LRB and we can't wait to visit again on future trips!

Great little hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Little Red Boathouse. It was very clean and located right on the water. The cabin was very cute and well decorated. The cabin is centrally located between Glen Arbor/Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, and Lake Leelanu so we were able to easily visit many local destinations while staying at the LRB. The owner (Cheri) was very responsive to all of our requests/questions. We would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a family trip or romantic getaway.
