About Brian or Dawn Steeland

My wife Dawn and I started coming to Grand Cayman in 2000 to SCUBA dive with our 2 children. We fell in love with the gentle people, perfect climate, and beautiful unspoiled sea. We finally purchased a piece of this paradise in 2010. It is a dream come true. Our cottage is one of 16 that were built as a dive resort in the 1960s on what was the very remote north shore. It has miraculously survived all the developers and is continuously preserved and improved by the very passionate individual owners. There is nothing like it left on Grand Cayman. We love to share it with our guests and receive lots of very positive reviews. We are blessed to have a local Caymanian couple, Miss Barbara and her husband Linsford care for our cottage and guests. They are like family to us! Contact us anytime. We love to discuss this very special place with anyone interested!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mr. Brian,

I wanted to find just the right words to describe the essence of your charming cottage.

You were an absolute joy to work with in coordinating the dates for my trip. You made everything easy and seemless.

It is evident that you and your wife place a lot of pride and love in the Sea Lodge with all the upgrades and decorative touches throughout the cottage. It is truly a labor of love and appreciation for the Cayman's culture. Mr. Linsford speaks very highly of you as well. He asked if I knew you and I told him that I felt like I did (although) we have never met in person -- only by email.

My absolute favorite part of the house is the seaside lanai- I spent every waking moment on the lanai enjoying the landscape. I love how all the doors open up to the lanai and expands the cottage space two fold, and I loved the welcoming white rocking chairs on the courtyard side-- very nice touch.

During this trip, I visited the Botanical Gardens ( quite a treat) and the Crystal Caves (newest attraction on the northside), in addition to Stingray City. The caves are something everyone must see and explore. The guided tour is very well done. There are currently three caves open and one more to come online this summer. You may want to add the Crystal Caves to your "Things To Do List".

Between Kirk's Corner and Over the Edge I was well nourished with great local foods. I was able to meet one of the cooks at Kirk's Corner- Ms. Bloosom.

The entire week was nourishment for the soul, spirit, mind and body.

Thanks again for your kindness!

Gorgeous, with (mostly) seasonal shortcomings

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at this property. It was as shown in the pictures - beautiful - and as described. The place was well appointed. We woke to the sunrise from the bedroom and the beach was just steps away.

A couple of considerations:

- As advertised, there's no AC. This is a challenge, at least during the season we visited (mid-Sept) with consistent temps of 30C/95F (before humidex which took it to 42C/115F) day and night. The breeze and fans brought very little relief.

- The mattress on the bed is not an independent coil mattress so every move by your partner results in a lot of motion. If you're a light sleeper...

- The location is somewhat remote, (which would likely be a blessing during peak times). Our timing was during the off-peak so this presented a mix. We had the beach and property to ourselves, but many of the closest businesses (tour operators, restaurants) were closed or providing reduced services for the season.

- The snorkeling right off the beach is good, but you're missing out if you don't explore other areas of the island for snorkeling and/or diving.

Overall a lovely stay, though between the heat and the bouncy bed we were sleep challenged.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Angela for choosing our property! I'm glad you enjoyed your time on beautiful Grand Cayman. The mattress is an expensive Ethan Allen we shipped here from the US. Never had anything but positive comments about it in hundreds of rentals. I'm here now sleeping very well on it. A mattress preference is personal and it's hard to satisfy all guests. I'm very sorry it caused you sleep issues. We try very hard to make the Sea Lodge experience special!

Ideal secluded location for snorkeling on Grand Cayman

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Sea Lodge #14 very much! Everything was exactly as advertised. Driving on the island was different but not difficult! All of Brian's suggestions of places to eat, grocery store, liquor store etc. were spot on. The snorkeling right out from the property was excellent. We saw beautiful soft and hard corals, varieties of fish, and a huge lobster! Swimming out to the reef wasn't difficult and there was no boat traffic to worry about. We loved the secluded location! There was remodeling work going on in the unit next to us, but we hardly knew it. The guys were quiet and very friendly especially Mr. Lindsay who was so nice to talk to. We had one small issue during our stay that I needed to contact Miss Barbara about (the safe or the user malfunctioned). She answered her phone right away and fixed the issue super fast!! Thanks, Miss Barbara! We felt relaxed and safe during our stay. The only reason we gave this stay 4 stars instead of 5 was the heat in August. We knew there was no air conditioning before we booked. But, we needed at least one other fan so we didn't have to move the stand fan from living room to bedroom. All reviews said the winds kept it cooler. However, during our stay August 17-24, we had 3 nights with no breeze and the temp didn't go below 85* . Even knowing ahead of time and taking our own cooling towels and ice packs, we had a difficult time sleeping. Again, we were fully informed of this before hand but if staying in August, one might do well to bring extra personal cooling devices. In closing, we also highly recommend the Bioluminescent Bay kayak trip with Cayman Kayak! Super cool and worth the price!! For great food we recommend Kaibo on the beach, Over the Edge, Eagle Rays, and Tukka's happy hour!

Excellent location to get away from it all

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here in unit 14. The place was pretty quiet the week we were there and we had the beach to our selves most days. The location is excellent. Far away from the masses on the west end. Very quiet.

The beach was nice. It's not a very good walking beach as you can't go very far to the east, but you can walk down to Rum Point to the west. It's just not very easy as it's pretty rocky. Water entry is just OK with lots of sea grass and hidden rocks to walk over. Once you get over that, the snorkeling is pretty darn good out by the reef. It's a decent swim to get out there, but once you do you will be rewarded with plenty of marine life. We saw a few sting rays in our travels to and from the reef.

There are a handful of restaurants in Rum Point. Kaibo beach and Kaibo Upstairs are excellent. You can pretty much skip the rest of Rum Point. Too many people for us. Mudslide? Pass. The Italian Kitchen on the east end is really good as well. "Worth the drive" as everyone likes to say in their advertising.

There were three or four nights where we wished there was AC in the bedroom as the trade winds were pretty dead those nights. Sure we knew the unit was without AC going in, but we could have used it a few nights. You just can't predict the weather and the winds. Yes, there are plenty of fans in the unit, but I would suggest upgrading to higher RPM fans that move substantially more air around. The one in the bedroom is probably in its last season of service.

Aside from the occasional crab or scorpion (yep, found one in the shower when we first got there) finding a way inside, the condo was really nice. The wifi works well (tip: if it stops working for you, just unplug the unit, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in.) and was plenty fast to stream Netflix in the evening after dinner. The kitchen had everything we needed. The bathroom was fine as well. The screened in back porch area was a fantastic place to have a morning or evening cocktail. No judging. You're on vacation.

Then next time we return to Grand Cayman it will be with a larger group of people, so we would be looking for a larger place to stay, but it would certainly be in this area. Without question. And I'm pretty certain it would be a place with AC for the occasional still summer nights.

Owner's Response: Hi Jamie. Thanks so much for choosing our beach cottage and we're happy you had a great time! There are scorpions on Cayman. They are small and not lethal like those found in Arizona. We have the interior and exterior of the Sea Lodges treated every 3 months. I have only seen 1 in the last 8 years. The salt air destroys the ceiling fans quickly. I replace them often and will this fall. I'm sorry you didn't like the Rum Point Club. Almost everyone finds it to be a fantastic destination for eating, drinking, water sports, and the amazing beach. Potential guests should check it out on Trip Advisor. It's only a 5 minute walk from the cottage. I make it very clear on the website and in the rental agreement that we don't have AC. If it's something a guest wants, our cottage would not be a good choice. We love the trade wind breezes and fresh sea air! Anyone considering this cottage can contact me anytime with any questions they may have. Warm regards, Brian.

Beautiful scenic Kayman Kai

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at Sea Lodges. It was very relaxing and just a great place to unwind. The unit was well stocked with kitchen essentials so feeling at home was easy. There was comfortable furniture and several fans to keep the unit cool.... Screened in porches front and back made enjoying the outdoor areas mosquito free... When we were here, the beach was never very crowded with there being no more than 5 or 6 other people out there with us . The beach was clean and had very soft sand to walk on... I would recommend wearing water shoes as there is some coral and sea grass near the shore to walk through. The neighborhood is quiet with a laid back attitude so if you are looking for a relaxing get away, this is the place for you.

Beautiful, quiet and peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Sea Lodges before and never been dissatisfied. It is truly a place to find serenity and reconnect with each other. Sea Lodge #14 has everything you could need to enjoy your time on the island from comfortable furnishings to a well appointed kitchen. This complex is perfect for rest and relaxation yet close enough to restaurants, outdoor adventure options and nightlife. Though we had some frustrating complications with our air travel, the owners were easily accessible and very helpful. We will surely be back!
