Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10) - Very close to town...

If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.

Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.

Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.

Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

About The Owner

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Kona Coast

We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.

Cozy Paradise nestled in the best part of the Island!

  • 5 of 5

This place is tropical paradise to say the least. The house is so open and really gives you a 360 degree view. Not to mention it is near my favorite places to snorkel on the island! I would recommend staying here to all my family/friends! I felt so at home at this place I did not want to leave....Definitely will be back soon!

Amazing place! Very close to our favorite beaches and convenient for shopping. The birds and frog sounds made us feel like we were in the jungle.

Pu'uhonua house

  • 5 of 5

This home is a true slice of paradise! Our entire family of eight loved everything about it...the beautiful house with the feel of a luxurious treehouse; the fragrance and views of the beautiful gardens, with lava rock terraces filled with orchids, plumeria, pineapple and so many other exotic plants; the geckos...so much fun watching them jockeying for position at the mango nectar we put out for them!; the birds singing in the morning and the sound of tree frogs singing us to sleep at night; the VIEWS! The location was very convenient...close to awesome little shops and eateries and not too far from Kona...yet felt very private. The house was very well supplied, including beach stuff, and Bruce was incredibly kind and accommodating with any questions we had.Would definitely recommend Pu'uhonua house to others and would love to come back!

Pu'uhauno House

  • 5 of 5

Loved the Pu'uhauno house. Accommodations were outstanding. Very peaceful with amazing fragrances from the beautiful foliage and blooms. The owner was very helpful in providing recommendations for activities and restaurants, etc. My grandsons loved the "tree house" atmosphere as well as the loft. Highly recommend this house for families.

Cozy nest

  • 5 of 5

The warm wood construction sits on the side of the mountain looking over the south west side of the island. The taller home feels like a cozy nest, especially in the loft the kids loved. We spent most of our family time on the lani. Opening up all the sliding doors to the cool breeze and friendly geckos was a great welcome home after seeing the sights on the West side of the island. The ammedenies were perfect and found what we needed and more. Will look to stay here again next time around. Aloha and mahalo!

Incredible views in a VERY natural setting

  • 4 of 5

We originally selected this property due to its beautiful wood construction and incredible views. Once there, we appreciated its convenient location, lush garden setting, spacious accommodations, well stocked kitchen and thoughtful everyday supplies. The owners were very helpful and responsive as well. However, since we were unaware that traditional Hawaiian house construction does not include air conditioning, it took some time getting used to the constant humidity. And while the glass and screen sliding doors let in the wonderful trade winds, the gaps between the doors and the holes in the screens also let in bugs and geckos. So, if you can overlook the humidity and critters, this is a beautiful place to stay.

Owner's Response: Aloha from the Big Island. We have had an unusually wet couple of weeks. The property is beautiful and lush with a bit more humidity than normal. Our home sits at 1400 ft in elevation. At this elevation on the mountain, we typically have one of the most comfortable climates in the world. No need for air conditioning and sometimes a bit chilly at night. Not only is our property very lush, but we do have our share of nature buzzing around especially in the wet season. Typically the buz is never really a problem inside the house if the sliding doors are arranged properly. Holes in screen have been repaired. As you can see in our over 65 plus reviews, no other guests have commented on insects and our beloved geckos. We love the abundance of nature we have on our beautiful Island and hope that you will as well. Mahalo, Bruce Paoli
