Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.
The Owner purchased this house in 2004
We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.
Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.
My husband and I stayed at this dream vacation for 10 days and thoroughly enjoyed all this beautiful house had to offer! The sunsets we witnessed were truly awe-inspiring. The house itself is quite unique, and offers a great "home" for anyone travelling to the Big Island. Captain Cook is a great place to set up home base on Hawaii as we were close to a great restaurant called the Coffee Shack, as well as to Kealakekua Bay where early morning swims can be quite rewarding! The house is a magical getaway and both my partner and I were happy to relax in the beauty of the home. There are many provisions the house has to offer if you were coming as a couple or with your family. There were even some mermaid oracle cards we found that had some really interesting messages during our vacation! Bruce is a wonderful and attentive host, anytime i messaged him for assistance with a matter he would respond quickly and resolve the issue in a very timely fashion. We will be returning next year for another visit for sure!
Our family had never taken a big trip like this, and the setting of this home was ideal in all aspects. The glass windows look out on a tropical paradise, with the coastline stretching beyond the beautiful foliage. It made it hard to leave, even for the great activities that the Big Island has to offer. Just swinging in the hammock, sipping coffee while watching birds and geckos a few feet -- or inches away -- was so relaxing and pleasurable. The host is responsive to every request, the kitchen and house well stocked. A fantastic, magical place!
We had a marvelous week here and look forward to returning. Thanks to Bruce and all for a wonderful, peaceful, gorgeous family time. We recommend it very highly. It was quite a treat. For others who are coming with elderly family members, just be prepared for steps and narrow doorways. My 93-year-old mother managed nicely and loved it as much as the rest of us.
This is a charming home perfect for a family or group of friends. The kitchen is well-equipped for making meals to enjoy on the wonderful lanai. The rustic style has everything needed for a restful getaway.
We stayed three nights in this comfortable and well- equiped house with its fantastic view over the hawaiian coast, overlooking the Hanaunau and Halekeokeo Bay. We will come back, just to take a swim with the spinner dolphins.
My family of 4 really thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pu`uhonua House. This house had the coolest construction design. It felt like you were staying in a tree house that offered the most spectacular views of Captain Cook's Bay. The house has many steps with all the bedrooms on the lower level plus a large sleeping loft on the top level. All the walls were screened from floor to ceiling. Most of the time there was a breeze to enjoy. Since we were there in August, it was not necessary to close the glass panels due to the warmer temperature. It did get a little warm & humid during the day but usually cooled off for the evening. We loved the eco-friendly environment! Bruce was a very responsive host and set us up with kayaking & SUP outings. Bruce also gave us lots of other location suggestions for hanging out at the various beaches and snorkeling locations plus great restaurant suggestions when we didn't feel like cooking. The house is fully stocked with all the kitchen pots, pans, & spices for cooking. Plus, Bruce provides coolers, plenty of beach towels, beach chairs, & noddles for spending the day at the beach. Bruce took us down to Two Step Beach where we did paddle boards & snorkeled and got to swim with the wild dolphins. Wow, that was so exiting! You will love staying at Pu`uhonua House!
Kayak across beautiful Kealakekua Bay to Captain Cooks Monument for unbelievable snorkeling.
