Wonderful, cozy, clean and comfortable cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Coral's Spirit of the Mountain retreat over Thanksgiving for 4 nights with a 16 year old girl and 13 year old boy. The layout of the cabin is very comfortable in that we all had our "own space" but were together the whole time. Our daughter loved the room upstairs, all to herself and our son loved the game room downstairs with his half bath and futon and pool table that we all enjoyed nightly. We enjoyed the gas fire in the living room daily and the kitchen had everything we needed by way of tools and pans to make our meals.

Coral met us on the first evening and was very gracious even after we were gone, when she mailed us my daughter's jeans that had been left in the dryer! The cabin was very clean and well kept. We were careful to follow the garbage rules since there can be bears in the forest and everything was provided to make our stay easy, including extra trash bags, paper towels, soap, dishwasher detergent, etc.

The location of the cabin is fantastic. It's very very close to Brevard, which is the cutest little town. The nearest grocery and Walmart are only minutes away and the proximity to both Dupont State Forest and the Pisgah National Forest is amazing. We were minutes from countless, fabulous hikes. Although the cabin is at the top of the mountain, it's still very accessible. We've stayed in some, where the road up was gravel, narrow and so steep that these flat-land-Floridians got nervous going up at night. This cabin has very good access and although steep, a very nice safe road with no traffic.

I have already recommended this cabin to a friend. Do not hesitate to book it. You will enjoy your stay at the top of this mountain. :)

Nice and Private. NOT Handicap Accessible.

  • 3 of 5

We recently stayed at the Spirit Bear;the last week of June 2013.

It's a very nice cabin, very private with a nice view.

However, we were in need of a handicapped cabin. I have Lou Gehrig's

disease (ALS) and can only move my neck. Thankfully, I have a laser eye

communicator which enables me to type this.

The cabin is advertised as handicapped accessible. Like many places that

advertise as handicapped friendly, we have found that is simply not the

So, I wanted to clarify the particular features of this cabin that might

make it difficult for many.

There are steps into the cabin, we carry a portable ramp;so we were able

to get in. I should note that the owner of the cabin did notify us of the

steps before hand, so we were expecting these. We were led to believe that

the rest of the cabin was handicap accessible.

However, the door to the bathroom was too narrow to get in with the

wheelchair. Fortunately, we had a shower wheelchair that is a little more

narrow so i would have to be transferred to that to get into the bathroom.

Once I was in there though more problems arose. The toilet was not

handicapped equipped, it did not have a hand rail.

The shower was step, not roll in. There wasn't a handrail in the shower.

It did not have a hand held shower head. There was no room for shower

The master bed did not have room to pull wheelchair beside bed.

Until three years ago, I would not have had a clue what was necessary for a

person with disabilities to get around and the very difficult task of

finding a vacation spot.

In fact, most of the places that are on the handicapped vacation sites are

not truly suitable for the person with disabilities.

My purpose of writing this review is to make people aware that it is not

handicap accessible, as advertised. However, it is a nice cabin for those

who are not disabled.

Owner's Response: It is very unfortunate that the communications for this booking did not go directly through the person needing the handicapped accommodations. Our cabins are NOT handicapped accessable and are NOT advertised as such. One cabin has a ramp to allow wheelchair access to the main floor, and has been used by many with wheelchairs successfully. However, the person booking this reservation specifically requested the cabin WITHOUT the wheelchair ramp (telling me they had their own) and was fully informed that the cabin was NOT handicapped accessable prior to reserving. I am very sorry for the lack of communication to the person in need of greater accommodations.

Couldn't Ask for Better!

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I planned a last-minute getaway for a little mommy R&R. We were able to take advantage of the 40% discount since we booked our trip within 7 days of traveling. You could not ask for a better place to stay for $195/night! Coral, the owner, was quick to respond to my reservation inquiry and was extremely friendly (both on the phone and when we met at Spirit of the Bear). The cabin was clean, stocked, and so amazingly peaceful! If you spend a few minutes on the deck at night, you might be rewarded with a bear "sighting" (or at least the lights of a bear's eyes in the dark), its growl, and the distressed calls of its cubs...really!

If you make a trip to Brevard, be sure to eat at Cielito Lindo. The food was fantastic (and cheap). If it's a massage that you desire, La Petite Spa offers resonable rates for quality services. And finally, Hendersonville is a great place to spend an afternoon shopping and eating. Mezzaluna makes the best BBQ chicken pizza.

Thank you, Coral, for providing a place where we could renew our spirit.

There at the peak of fall - clean; spectacular views; s'mores over the campfire; relaxing atmosphere; very comfortable; fresh, crisp air - just breathe it in. White squirrel greeted us every morning outside front door of Spirit Bear cabin - amazing. Kids highly enjoyed also. Highly recommend.

Charming Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing Spirit Bear with us. Our stay in your charming cabin was perfect. Our time there felt more like a visit at the well-kept home of a close friend than the normal vacation rental. The impeccably clean cabin exceeded our expectations in every way - the decor, furnishings and location were fantastic, and everything we needed was there.

A special Thank you for helping us finalize the details of our stay, and the wonderful tips for hiking and our waterfall seeking adventures. Our only regret was that we were unable to stay longer!

Spirit of the Mountain cabin

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in this cabin with our daughter, for her birthday, and her two children. The cabin was very clean, peaceful and comfortable. Owner supplied all of our needs and helpful in answering our questions.. The owner met us at the cabin and showed us around and explained where everything was. We visited Sliding Rock and Hooker Falls and grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed this. Would recommend this cabin for friends or relatives. The cabin was prettier than the photos and description.

Owner's Response: I just love welcoming guests to the mountaintop and Spirit of the Mountains cabin! The beauty, energy, and peacefulness can truly only be experienced in person. Guests regularly tell us that the pictures simply do not compare to the reality. As an Esoteric Healing energy therapist and teacher, I can attest to the special intention that has gone into every detail of the creation of this sacred space, built uniquely for nurturing in nature in mind for each who visit. Once you visit... you WILL be back. Spirit of the Mountains is a one of a kind mountaintop oasis of beauty, peace, and luxury.
