Master Stateroom on vintage yacht, USCG Captain included
About Craig Harms
I'm a lifelong sailor, currently enjoying the Caribbean as a live aboard cruiser. If you have ever dreamed of selling it all, cutting the docking lines and sailing off towards the horizon, come stay aboard Sonoma and learning what it is all about. I have over 15 years experience teaching sailing to adults, and so am more than happy to share and help you learn can simply run the boat for you so that you can sit back and enjoy the incredible environment that is the USVI.
Craig Harms purchased this Boat in 2013
Why Craig Harms chose Estate Southgate
I purchased Sonoma because of its center cockpit layout providing two staterooms, two full heads (bathrooms), saloon, walk through galley and ample cockpit and deck space. She sails beautifully with a simple sloop layout that I can single-hand. The Bristol 41.1 blue-water pedigree is renowned enabling her to truly go anywhere in the world. Her 4.5 foot draft allows us to navigate in harbors that many others can't so we can go off the beaten path to see things missed by others. Come join the Caribbean adventure.
What makes this Boat unique
The yachting lifestyle is something special to experience. We can stay in the marina to enjoy the amenities, or we can move to a protected anchorage to enjoy, Christiansted, Fredricksted, Buck Island, Salt River Bay National Park or many other fabulous harbors. Stay four days or more, and we can visit St John and St Thomas.

I couldn't imagine a better vacation! Craig is an expert sailor and a great cook! (And bartender!) It was a wonderful adventure that I won't soon forget. He knows all the great spots on the island. It was like having a personal tour guide in addition to our captain. We enjoyed the food, the sailing and the company.
My daughter and I had a great time sailing St. Croix with Craig. He’s very knowledgeable, skilled, humorous, as well as a good cook. We had fun sailing, snorkeling, and we enjoyed a pod of dolphins that rounded the island with us. Highly recommend this adventure.
Sail Snoma was so awesome...We can't wait for Stay Sonama
Capt. Craig, and his lovely wife Cal were quite the perfect host. With picking us up at the airport, to helping us pull off a big surprise for our daughter, we enjoyed the hospitality of both Craig and Cal, aboard their 41 foot Bristol sailboat. The itinerary for both sailing days and provisioning the boat were spot on, as were the dishes, prepared by Cal that kept coming up through the companionway, taste, presentation, and variety, were all second to none.
I would highly recommend this trip to both sailors and non-sailors, Captain Craig's experience on the water and knowledge of the Island were most comforting, and as someone with some sailing experience, I learned a lot too !
So, if you are in the adventure mood, or just like beautiful boats, this trip is for you.
Our time on the beautiful Sonoma was amazing! If you love sailing, then this is a trip for you! Craig & Cal absolutely personalize each trip for their guests. They are very attentive and go out of their way to make you feel welcomed on their vessel. We immediately felt like we were visiting old friends. Craig has many years of sailing under his belt, so you feel completely safe and Cal is a culinary genius!
We sailed every day and stayed in gorgeous, remote Cays that offered phenomenal snorkeling experiences. We honestly felt like we were dining at a 5 star resort for every meal, as the food and drinks exploded with fresh flavors. Not only were we able to explore the beautiful waters, but they also drove us around St. Croix so that we could see the beautiful island and rain forest.
There are a million other things we could say about this once in a lifetime experience, but we will leave it for you to decide once you book YOUR trip on the Somoma! See for yourself what a magical trip this will be, as everyone will feel like it was specially designed for them!
Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful review. We loved having both of you aboard.
I think part of the reason that your trip was really special is because you arrived in St Thomas and departed from St Croix. This gave us the opportunity to showcase the beauty of all three USVIs. Great choice.
Hope to see you both again.
BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS! A DREAM TRIP!
Sailing aboard Sonoma for 6 days with Captain Craig and his wife, Cal, was a relaxing, fun, luxurious and laid back adventure. They have an eye for amenities (fresh flowers in our bathroom) and casual elegance in everything they do aboard and on land for you. Every morning, after a deep sleep on our super comfy queen bed, they greeted us hot coffee, freshly squeezed fruit juice accompanied by a homemade breakfast that one would expect to find at a 5 star resort! Local, fresh ingredients all prepared with skill and care. We had so many great adventures seeing St. Croix from the water as well as by land while staying aboard. We sailed and fished our way to Salt River Bay. Craig and Cal dropped anchor for our overnight that consisted of a fabulous charcuterie platter, stellar sliders with all the fixings and a night time adventure into the bio luminescent lagoon. Another day, we sailed to Buck Island to snorkel and feast on Craig's freshly made gazpacho with grilled shrimp and his signature "Lime in the Coconut" cocktail. It was like something out of a movie! If you are a sailor, or even if you have never sailed, and love great people, great food and memorable adventures on land and at sea- BOOK SONOMA NOW. Pictures and tales can never do it justice. Craig and Cal made it so easy from the first email to plan our itinerary and provisions, as they did the whole way through our trip. You will make memories and friends that will last a lifetime. We were beyond thrilled with Sonoma- we give it 5 STARS PLUS!
Thank you for your kind words. We loved having you aboard and look forward to seeing you again.
We certainly appreciate that you called out the pre-trip planning as part of the review. At SailSonoma we consider that one of the most critical parts of a successful stay and charter, so that we can meet and exceed your expectations.
Trip of a lifetime
I was fortunate enough to discover Sail Sonoma on VRBO. If you have ever thought about taking a week long sail or a leisurely day sail this is the boat and Captain and crew for you!
During the pre-booking and booking process Craig was extremely quick emailing me back with answers to my many questions. He offered us recipes to choose from. Also, a detailed itenerary, fined tuned to our interests.
Craig and Cal went grocery, beer, and alcohol shopping for us. This is huge, since grocery shopping is so time consuming and takes up quality vacation time. Yes, they went to 3 stores to find Fritos😎.
Craig said he would pick us up at the airport when we arrived. Our flight was late and I was stressing out because I didn’t want him to have to wait on us, but he was so kind and patient, and said he would be waiting for us.
A lady I met on the airplane had told us about a “jump up’ party that occurs once monthly, I think, and takes place on the boardwalk. We mentioned this to Craig and he offered to drop us at the party, take our suitcases to the boat ,and pick us up whenever we were ready to go. Fun way to start a vacation!
The next morning we had a delicious breakfast prepared by Cal, and the “drink of the day” that included a fun history lesson. Throughout the sailing adventure, the food and drinks were delicious and beautiful. Cal can make a ham sandwich and Fritos look elegegant, she’s awesome! Craig’s cocktails were most impressive!
We attempted to serve ourselves, as we are not used to being catered to. Craig and Cal anticipated all of our needs, even before we knew we needed them.
After breakfast we headed to Buck Island. A beautiful, pleasant surprise. The sand and the color of the water was magnificent. A party boat of young ladies having fun, dancing to music when pulled up to the island. I walked around part of the island and didn’t see a soul. It was such a perfect day. I want to go back with a cooler and a blanket and stay the entire day.
We wanted to do a lot of sailing, and Craig and Cal obliged. Cal and Craig caught mahi for our dinner one night.
We sailed to and around Salt River Bay, the bioluminescent lagoon. Enjoyed the amenities of Tamirand Reef Resort.
We had one rainy day. Cal offered to show us St. Croix, and that she did! Our “Cruising with Cal” day was spectacular!! They have lived on the island less than a year but their knowledge of St. Croix is more than impressive. They are both accomplished Sailors, a fantastic team. It was p
