Great get away for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were holidaying to celebrate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary and San Martino was the perfect venue. There was plenty of room for everybody to have their own space but come together for fun and games. The swimming pool was a definite hit with everybody and the lake also provided entertainment together with spectacular views of Civitella del Lago (which is the most delightful mountain village and well worth a visit) It was incredibly hot the first part of the week which enforced the relaxation but Orvieto provided plenty of distraction with shade. Barbara cooked the most amazing meal for us one evening, so many thanks to her. All in all, a fabulous holiday that everybody thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you

A wonderful house in a lovely setting.

  • 5 of 5

We had a really good time in San Martino! The house itself is very well renovated, with ensuite bathrooms for all bedrooms, very spacious lounges to accomodate even bigger groups (we were 6 families with lots of kids and it never felt crowded). The kitchen is well-equipped, there is a wonderful herb garden just behind it.

We also used the services of the cook for a birthday celebration and were very happy with the food (esp the truffle lasagne!).

Overall - a really-really nice experience!

Perfection in Orvieto

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I invited our three adult children along with their significant others to join us for 10 days in Italy. We flew into Florence and enjoyed 3 days there before heading 2 hours south to Orvieto and the villa San Martino. What a fortunate decision we made. The owner Philippa communicated with us beautifully throughout the entire process. The property itself is stunning and is represented very accurately in the photos. San Martino is about 15 easy minutes from the train station and grocery store in Orvieto. Very convenient. Additionally I have to mention the local team that makes the process go smoothly. Nick the yard manager came each day to check on the pool and dispose of the trash. Barbara prepared wonderful meals for us and Anna Maria cleaned. All were kind and helpful and added to our enjoyment. You will be thrilled to include San Martino as home base on you Umbria/Tuscany trip.

thanks Philippa !!

Fantastic week

  • 4 of 5

A group of 21 friends for a week. We fit very comfortably, and there's plenty of space in the garden and downstairs too. A lot of activities, such as ping pong, basketball, the lake, pool etc, means that lazing around all day within the villa is very easy. However, lovely location between beautiful Umbrian towns to go out to. We had fabulous food, with one night cooked by local chefs, who Philippa found for us. And one night at the local village, for a cheap and cheerful meal. Highly recommend this villa!

About Philippa Farrow

I used to own San Martino but sold it a few years ago to the current owners. I now oversee the bookings on their behalf but San Martino is actually run by a group of Italians who have lived in the area all their lives. The main person is Anna Maria, who speaks basic English but she is helped by friends who speak English.

Anna Maria will welcome you on arrival and briefly explain how the house works, there is also a booklet with the instructions written down. Anna Maria usually comes back the next morning to check everything is okay and then will call in a couple more times, usually in the mornings, to remove the rubbish.

Philippa Farrow purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Philippa Farrow chose Orvieto

Because it's unique - the lake surrounding the house and the views from the front of the house are stunning; a medieval village perched high above rolling hills with olive groves and vineyards.

The house and grounds are large enough to be able to find a private space.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house is designed for large groups - it's not divided into small apartments but is just a very large, family home that can easily accommodate large groups without feeling cramped.

San Martino combines the best of Italy - easily accessible but close to beautiful, medieval walled hill top towns and villages and stunning scenery.

The house itself sits at the end of a large, private peninsula on Lake Corbara. There is a large swimming pool, a basket ball hoop and a ping pong table outside.Excellent walks nearby - with different routes passing through vineyards, olive groves, high meadows and woods.

Corbara village is 3kms away, a few minutes drive or a 20 minute walk along the lake shore. It has one bar and one trattoria serving traditional food sourced locally.

Orvieto (16kms) and Todi (25kms) are our local towns - they are both perfectly preserved medieval towns steeped in cultural interest. Medieval Orvieto, which sits high above the valley on a tufa crag, has one of the finest Renaissance cathedrals in Italy with frescoes by Signorelli and Fra Angelico.

Orvieto's lower town has banks, supermarkets, the train station and access on to the A1 motorway. There is a funicular up to the historic old town of Orvieto which has many restaurants and beautiful shops.

Assisi and Perugia are about an hour's drive, whilst Rome and Florence are 1.15 hours and 2 hours respectively by direct train.

Car hire is essential although the train service to major cities is excellent.
