Villa Olivia is an attractive, family-run property, situated about 10-15 minutes walk from the centre of the little town of Forio, Ischia's most western resort.
The Villa stands back from the road in a large garden of vines, cacti, olives, citrus fruits, roses and palms. Throughout the summer geraniums and bougainvillea cascade colour everywhere. The large gardens feature relaxing corners and two pools, a large outdoor swimming pool Mt 12 x 5,5 and a covered heated pool with natural spring water of 34°C.
The villa is divided up into self-catering one-room en-suite studio apartments, which sleep 2 people, and two-bedrooms en-suite apartments which sleep 5 people. Each apartment has a kitchenette, shower room, and a balcony or terrace with sea or mountain view, perfect for 'al fresco' dining on the warm Mediterranean evenings. Many free beaches including 'La Chiaia', 'Spinesante' are located within an easy walk off our Villa. Bus stop at the gate. Supermarket at mt 50.
The island of Ischia:: Known as the Green Island because of its abundant flora, Ischia is also renowned for its exceptionally mild climate and therapeutic springs. Formed almost exclusively of volcanic rock, Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, offering sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, wooded mountainsides and much more. Walkers can explore coastal paths or the rugged terrain of Monte Epomeo -789 m. History enthusiasts will enjoy the Aragonese Castle at Ischia Ponte, the Archaeological Museum at Lacco Ameno and other interesting historical sites. The island bus service is good, with frequent buses to all the main points of interest. Car-hire is reasonably priced and the characteristic little Microtaxis are plentiful. Although the British have frequented the Isle of Capri and the Sorrentine peninsular for many years, they seem to have only recently re-discovered Ischia and its delights. One particular local attraction is the spectacular garden 'La Mortella' (see below).
Forio:: The largest town on the island, Forio is full of interesting shops, excellent restaurants and numerous pavement cafés where you can sit and watch the world pass by over a coffee, aperitif or ice cream. There is a daily market and several good bookshops - WH Auden spent much of his time here, as did Henrik Ibsen and others. The town has a picturesque harbour full of fishing and sailing boats from where you can catch the hydrofoil to Naples or round-the-island pleasure trips. Adjacent to the harbour are the beautiful beaches of Chiaia and San Francesco with pale sand and crystal clear water. Just beyond is the exotic garden 'La Mortella' created by Lady Susana Walton, widow of the English composer Sir William Walton, with the help of the celebrated landscape architect Russell Page. This year is the centenary of Sir William who died in 1983, so his music and the garden have been much-featured recently in the media. Summer visitors to the garden from can enjoy free classical concerts.
Beyond Ischia:: Although there is plenty to keep visitors happily occupied on the island, it is also very easy to visit the islands of Capri and Procida, or to spend a day on the mainland; Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Sorrento are all possible. There are regular ferries and hydrofoils to most places from Ischia Porto, a limited service of both from Casamicciola, and several hydrofoils daily from Forio to Naples.
The studio apartment comprises a large room with twin beds or double, as required.
The kitchenette is compact but adequately equipped with cupboards, refrigerator and gas hob.
A table and chairs are provided for eating either inside or on the balcony with its magnificent views. The bathroom has a shower and the apartment has ceramic tiled floors throughout.
A large wardrobe provides plenty of hanging and storage space and is equipped with extra blankets for cooler nights.
Villa Olivia is a lovely property - beautiful garden which the owner, Giuseppe, tends lovingly - two very pleasant pools and the apartments themselves, although basic, are clean and functional.
It's a great base for Forio, about a 20 minute work to the main beach, a little longer to the picturesque historic centre; and there are a couple of very nice restaurants close by. It's also really easy and quite cheap to get around the island on the circular bus routes.
We loved Forio itself, the walk to La Mortella gardens was also worthwhile and one morning we managed to ascend the extinct volcano, Mount Epomeo, which was spectacular. Ischia is a beautiful and friendly island and somewhere we would certainly come back to again at some point.
I can't finish this review without a special mention of Giuseppe, the owner. He went out of his way to be helpful to us, was always kind and considerate and is an impressively gifted linguist. He was the perfect host for a perfect holiday in a simply wonderful island setting.
Villa Olivia bzw.
