Guestbook comments from the manager

"We enjoyed the peaceful setting of the cottage, the nearby Somes Pond nature trail, Brookside Cemetery,... If we could change anything, we would move this wonderful cottage and island much closer to home. Thanks for your hospitality, and for providing a most welcome respite."

Wished I had another week!

  • 5 of 5

I always have a perfect vacation in this lovely setting! I've been coming here for over 40 years, and have spent so many wonderful weeks in Hawthorn Cottage. It feels like my home away from home. There isn't a detail left undone. It is clean, cozy, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. I love all of the original artwork, the fresh flowers in each room, and the sweet little deck surrounded by flowers, shade trees, and a private view of the expansive property and mountains beyond. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating, and love to share their knowledge of the best spots in the area to make your stay more enjoyable. Kayaking, swimming, lakes, beaches, and Bar Harbor, are all walkable or driveable in 10 minutes. Everyone should experience this beautiful corner of the world. I highly recommend this place!

Clean & attractive little cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Clean & attractive little cottage, in a lovely, quiet neighborhood of Somesville. Perfect for a couple, too small for 3. The host welcomed us with pretty seasonal (fall) bouquets from the yard, throughout the cottage, and showed us 2 local walks that we really liked.

A lovely, tranquil cottage with much convenience!

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely enjoyed my two-week stay at the Hawthorn Cottage. I felt particularly fortunate to have had such a good experience for my first visit to the Mount Desert Island (MDI).

I was greeted with several lovely flower arrangements placed throughout the cottage upon check-in. This turned out to be indicative of the owners’ thoughtfulness that has gone into the preparation of the living spaces, including the history of the place. The big grassy field was well kept, lined with trees at the edge of the owner’s property. I loved the quiet, whether looking out the window from the dining table or sitting on the porch in the shade of the swinging willow tree, planning my next day.

I certainly valued the quiet, but did not anticipate the convenience of the location before arrival. It literally takes only a few steps from the cottage to the bus stop where one can catch the free shuttle, Island Explorer. If driving, the cottage is at a central location, making it easy to go into Bar Harbor or points north and east, as well as interesting and beautiful sites and trails south and west. It takes no time at all to walk or bike over to the Somes Pond, a great swimming spot. I was also delighted to be able to launch my single scull and row on the Long Pond that is closer to the cottage than the drive I have to make back at home in order to row. Last but not the least is the easy access to the Blue Hill Farm, part of the College of the Atlantic, assuring me of fresh produce and other goodies every day.

The graciousness of the owners and the ease afforded by the Hawthorn Cottage as a home-away-from-home have allowed me to have had a lovely vacation. I shall plan to return.

Whether it is for one person or a couple, the Hawthorn Cottage will surely provide the comfort and convenience important for good rest and relaxation.

super sweet and quiet cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here during a week-long family vacation on Mount Desert Island, and loved the peace and quiet of the cottage. It is centrally located on a quiet, gravel cul-de-sac and has many charming and personal touches that make it a cozy and delightful place to stay. The sound in Somesville is a pleasant 5-minute walk away through a meadow, an old cemetery, and along a bustling brook. The only thing is that the shower stall is a little bit small and hot water a bit hard to control (sort of all-or-nothing.) Regardless, we were 100% happy here and would totally recommend it.

Bar Harbor

Somesville was the first village settled on Mt. Desert Island in the 18th century by Abraham Somes. It is virtually surrounded by Acadia National Park and sits at the head of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the east coast of the United States. The best thing about Somesville is its central location on the island, allowing equidistant drives to Bar Harbor's shops and restaurants, Northeast Harbor's historic summer homes and village, and the rustic charms of Southwest Harbor and the 'Quietside'. The island is alive with music, art, lobster and blueberry festivals, and friendly helpful people.
