For 50 years Hawthorn Cottage has welcomed couples to historic Somesville and Acadia National Park. Hawthorn Cottage shares two beautifully landscaped acres fringed with wild blueberry bushes. The lawn is open and sunny, with gardens and shade trees near the cottage and a deck with Adirondack chairs for sunning and observing Somesville's resident eagles and ospreys. You can walk to our library, repertory theater, museum, to the ocean or Somes Pond for a swim. Rental weeks run Saturday to Saturday.

Ken and I are retired art teacher and theater costume designer. We have owned Hawthorn Cottage since 1980, taking over from Chauncey Somes, whose ancestors settled the island. We especially enjoy sharing our love of Mount Desert Island and Acadia with our guests all these years. We hope you will join our large number of returning guests in savoring the best of Maine.

Wished I had another week!
I always have a perfect vacation in this lovely setting! I've been coming here for over 40 years, and have spent so many wonderful weeks in Hawthorn Cottage. It feels like my home away from home. There isn't a detail left undone. It is clean, cozy, and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. I love all of the original artwork, the fresh flowers in each room, and the sweet little deck surrounded by flowers, shade trees, and a private view of the expansive property and mountains beyond. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating, and love to share their knowledge of the best spots in the area to make your stay more enjoyable. Kayaking, swimming, lakes, beaches, and Bar Harbor, are all walkable or driveable in 10 minutes. Everyone should experience this beautiful corner of the world. I highly recommend this place!
What a wonderful accounting of all we strive to provide our guests. Getting to know our annual visitors is one of the best parts of sharing our home and cottages and Acadia. Thank you so much!
Absolutely loved our stay in this cottage, it was clean and well stocked, with fresh flowers in every room. Comfy bed and very quiet, yet close to all activities on the Island. Marilee was very helpful with any questions we had, I would highly recommend a stay here.
Sharing a bit of our island with our guests gives us such pleasure. Thank you for expressing your appreciation. Hope to see you again.
This Hawthorne cottage was the most quaint and cute cottage. Enjoyed staying here so very much. Anything you could ever need was readily available. The bed was gorgeous, and extremely comfortable. Marilee and Ken were very welcoming soon after we arriving. I hope to return to this cottage in the not too distant future. I would recommend this adorable place to any couple or single person.
Thank you for your thoughtful words, and, yes, do come for more adventures.
Nice cottage in quiet setting.
Nice cottage unit in lovely Somesville. We enjoyed exploring the west side of Acadia while still being close enough to visit the more notable areas in the main eastern side of Acadia. Cottage was inviting with fully functional kitchen, living space and a dining area. The bath is small but workable. Everything was as expected.
Glad you were able to enjoy the pleasures of the western side of the island from your little home in Somesville. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Precious, cozy cottage in the center of the island
Somerville is a central, historic location. Cottage is cozy and the perfect size for two people. Shower is tiny, but nothing you can't deal with for a vacation. We loved staying here!
So glad you enjoyed your stay. So much to discover here. Hope you will return some day for more exploring. Thank you!
Great little Cottage for two!
My wife and I stayed here in the middle of June for 8 nights and it was perfect. Perfect location and perfect little cottage. Some might say it was a bit too small, but we thought it was perfect for two! Thank You!
So glad you appreciated our cottage and lovely island. Do come again some day. Thank you!
Somesville was the first village settled on Mt. Desert Island in the 18th century by Abraham Somes. It is virtually surrounded by Acadia National Park and sits at the head of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the east coast of the United States. The best thing about Somesville is its central location on the island, allowing equidistant drives to Bar Harbor's shops and restaurants, Northeast Harbor's historic summer homes and village, and the rustic charms of Southwest Harbor and the 'Quietside'. The island is alive with music, art, lobster and blueberry festivals, and friendly helpful people.
