About Mike and Xiomara Carrington

This is my Family, I am Mike born in England, Xiomara my beautiful wife is Dominican and my daughter Michelle. We are currently living in Surrey and will probably stay here until Michelle has finished school. I have visited Dominican Republic no less than 42 times over the last 11 years and cannot wait to go back. Unfortunately, Xiomara cannot relax there because she is so popular, that even staying there for 3 months finds herself entertaining every day.

Mike and Xiomara Carrington purchased this house in 2002

Why Mike and Xiomara Carrington chose

We bought this property so we had a base when we visited the family. We fell in love with it because of the area it is in and the fact that it is a spacious, pretty house and it is close to the sea. The other good thing is that the family could stay there and look after the property while we are not there.

What makes this house unique

The property is situated on the north coast, and there is always a nice breeze from the ocean. The entrance hall is approx. 84 sq. mtrs and has a very impressive circular staircase made of marble and mahogany. The gated community is also a bonus.

Our lovely family home is in the gated community of Bayardo, part of the historic city of Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Its central location means you will be within walking distance or a short drive of many places of interest. These are some of the places you might like to visit, and which we can recommend to help you get the most out of your stay.

Starting with those closest to home and heading westwards, you have:

Oceanfront Boulevard is a long, wide road which runs alongside the sea with beautiful views and plenty of bars and restaurants to stop off at - great for walks or for just relaxing and enjoying the view and the cooling ocean breezes.

Long Beach is the nearest beach to our house and where you can go swimming (although the sea can be a little rough at times), with plenty of sand for children to play.

Fort San Felipe at the end of the boulevard, was built in the 16th century by the Spaniards to protect the city from French and English pirates.

Museum General Gregorio Luperon is one of the oldest buildings in the city and was brought back to life as an educational institution to honour the life of the national hero and President General Gregorio Luperon. It will give you a good insight into 19th century Dominican society.

Puerto Plata Central Park, with its attractive Victorian bandstand, is close to St Felipe Cathedral. It’s a great place to rest up and observe the local culture, especially on Sundays when large crowds attend Mass.

Amber Museum. Right in the city centre stands this lovely two-storey Victorian building which house one of the largest amber collection in the world. Dominican amber is also reputed to be the most transparent in the world.

Mount Isabel de Torres. The most amazing natural land mark in Puerto Plata, Mount Isabel de Torres is 2,555 feet (780 metres) above sea level and is a must-visit spot. Make sure you choose a cloudless day and take the 8-minute cable car ride to the top. The panoramic views are simply breathtaking! At the top, you are greeted by a replica of Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, botanical gardens and walking trails to the surrounding forest.

Ocean World Park, Marina and Casino. Ocean World is a zoo and marine park, located in the tourist resort complex of Cofresi. Features include the world's largest custom-made dolphin lagoon, a swimmable aquarium, sea lion and dolphin encounters, a shark interaction pool, tiger feeding area and bird area, as well as a large man-made beach and marina. The park is in a spectacular location.

If you have the opportunity, visit the marina. It is a lovely spot at any time of day. For evening entertainment, the casino and night club are open to the public.

Cofresi beach is right next to Ocean World.

Maimon is renowned for its restaurants specialising in fish dishes. We never leave the Dominican Republic without going there for the best fresh fish and sea food. There are lots of good restaurants along the main road.

Los 27 Charcos de Damajagua (27 Waterfalls), located half an hour from Puerto Plata, between the Altamira tunnel and the town of Imbert. These natural treasures are an amazing adventure. You need to be physically fit for this excursion. The idea is to make your way up to the head of the falls on foot and then make your way down by jumping and sliding down the pools of waters (10-20 ft drops)!

Nearby are Luperon Beach and La Isabela National Park.

Going in the opposite direction, we recommend:

Playa Dorada, which is 10 minutes east of Puerto Plata, is like Cofresi, a tourist resort complex by the sea. It has an 18-hole golf course and a small shopping arcade.

Fun City is an open air action park just past Playa Dorara. It has a go-kart centre, a play ground and pitcher challenge.

Keep going east, past the airport, and you will soon find yourself in Sosua, a busy coastal town. Sosua’s beautiful beach is dotted with lots of bars, cafes and restaurants and, of course, gift shops.

Caberete, has an equally attractive beach, lots places to eat and drink, and is the place to go for watersports, such as kiteboarding and windsurfing.

Beyond Cabarete are Playa Grande and Rio San Juan and from there you can keep going all the way to Samaná, the main centre for whale-watching tours.

Although we have mentioned a few places, there is certainly a lot more to see and do. The north coast is extensive and the list can just keep on growing. To make the most of your trip we advise you to get a map and do some online research of the places you are planning to visit or which look like possibilities. Many of these locations have their own website which will provide you with all the information you need.

If you are a first time traveller or you want an adventure-packed holiday, we suggest looking at what excursion companies have to offer, as they can organize day trips and provide guides to locations that are otherwise inaccessible.

Well, we hope you are ready to start your Caribbean adventure!

Very nice place, my recommendation

  • 5 of 5

My family and me went to Dominican Republic because my wife had to do lot of official stuff regarding her passport and the passports of our children, some certificates, and of course to visit our family. Besides that we decided that some vacation at a nice place would be a good idea. So I made some investigations in the web and found an offer at Puerto Plata...this place. After some emails and a call we decided to book three rooms for one week. I have to say, the offer only shows half of how beautiful this place really is...the house is very large, our rooms all had own bath rooms, there is a lot of space for the children outside. We had a very warm welcome, and our host helped us and took care of us. A family member of our host carried us all around, and Puerto Plata is a very beautiful city with nice beaches, museum and sightseeing places. And not to forget a huge shopping mall and an italian restaurant 200 m away from this place. At least, we stayed for 10 days, and we really enjoyed our stay and look forward to come back.
