About The Conrads
Tom and Dee Conrad left Michigan on their honeymoon in 1982. After exploration of the eastern seaboard and the Bahamas, they arrived on St. John in April of 1985, and fell in love with the island and its community. Shortly after, my sister (Carrie) and I (Jane) were born Virgin Islanders. We spent our early childhood living aboard Encounter in Coral Bay. In 1990, we purchased land in Coral Bay, built VISTAS SUPREME, and moved ashore. The time came when we needed to move stateside for school (St. Augustine, FL). Once my sister and I were attending college, my parents returned to St. John. I joined them in 2011 and within 3 years of being home we, as a family, invested in land and began to build a rental villa. The only way to afford this dream was to do it ourselves. My 72-year-old father, sister and I handled the physical labor, while Mom kept the books in order. We finished our villa just before the devastating Hurricane Irma and Maria were to sweep through the islands in 2017. Harbor Master was a fortress for us, built entirely out of concrete. She withstood the test and kept our family safe during the storms. We are proud to announce that she is ready for rental. My family and I love St. John and our community. We look forward to sharing our knowledge and our home with visitors.
The Conrads purchased this House in 2014
Why The Conrads chose Estate Carolina
To understand why this property, it's important to look at why we chose St. John. St. John holds a special place in our hearts. The island is the true embodiment of natural beauty. In 1956 Laurance S. Rockefeller donated so much land to the Department of the Interior that roughly two thirds of the island remains untouched within National Park Boundaries. It is because of this that St. John has maintained its beauty and serenity. The island has so much to offer from sunbathing on the pristine white beaches, hiking down tropical forest guts and up lush mountain tops, snorkeling coral reefs, sailing in the trades, fishing the drop, diving, to sight-seeing the historical sugar mill ruins. "We're All Here ‘Cause We're Not All There," is a common bumper sticker on island. We enjoy taking it back from societal norms and living in true "island time." You can't beat the trade-winds drifting through our open homes. I wouldn't trade that fresh, clean breeze for anything. Coral Bay is located where the trades blow in and the sunrises never get old. It is a playground for boaters and snorkelers encompassing nearly half of the island. Harbor Master stands vigilant over the entire area where life is even slower than the bustle of Cruz Bay. Four years ago, my Dad presented a business proposition to buy property together and build a house. My sister and I have been raised with the attitude that we can do anything if we try and work hard. We agreed to Dad's proposition and began doing just that. This property won our hearts with the view and location to the village of Coral Bay. We are 250’ above sea level, just high enough to feel the trade-winds, but close enough to the village to hear live music drift up the mountainside from restaurants below. Our view resembles a harbor master's looking over the entire harbor. We can see into the hurricane holes, out to east end, and into the BVI islands. Coffee on the deck at sunrise is something you don't want to miss.
What makes this House unique
We built Harbor Master as a family. Our own blood, sweat, and tears went into every stage of the building process. We built her strong to withstand hurricane seasons, while incorporating warm finish work. Our walls are adorned with custom watercolors by my sister Carrie (VeryCarrieArt.com) and paintings from local artist, Elaine Estern. All of our art work is framed in my Dad's handmade driftwood frames. St. John is located on latitude 18 where the trade winds are frequent and the sun is almost always shining. Harbor Master is built to accommodate the natural beauty of the island. We have large windows in the bedrooms, hurricane pane sliders spanning 12’ on the pool deck side and 16’ in the front overlooking all Coral Bay. Not only does this offer beautiful natural lighting, a panoramic view of the mountains, the harbor, and the islands in the distance, but also welcomes the cool trade wind breezes. We value outdoor living; therefore, we have plenty of deck for entertaining. St. John is a very mountainous terrain, full of bedrock, which makes gardening a challenge. We took to the traditional ways of terracing our hillside to allow the tropical flora to grow. Landscaping is one of our passions and we have strived to incorporate as many different palms (13) and tropical flora as possible. From the deck, you can watch as the sailboats come and go throughout the Harbor. Even if you’re not a morning person, you may find yourself rising for the beautiful sunrises.

Amazing views & hospitality
My family and I just returned from a memorable week at the Harbor Master and miss it already. This was our 6th trip to St John and by far our favorite. The owners are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make your visit the best it can be. This property has all the comforts of home with an amazing view. We enjoyed the late afternoons & evenings in the private pool overlooking Coral Bay. We loved the convenience of a food market at the bottom of the hill. On beach days, we had everything we needed: beach chairs, snorkel gear, floats, and a cooler. We highly recommend staying here. We will definitely be going back to Harbor Master next year!
Fantastic property! Great views, constant ocean breezes, a spacious deck and salt water pool!
In one word, “captivating”!
Jane was fantastic! She provided insights into shopping locations, snorkeling spots, dining options, et al! She was sincere, courteous and very helpful from the moment we booked to the movement we departed her property. The house and it’s amenities speak for themselves. The deck and pool are simply breathtaking! The views are grand at both sunup and sundown!!! The salt water pool was so refreshing after a day on the beach as well as for a moonlight swim. The interior was an open floor plan, with tile floors, marble counter tops and was very comfortable! Even during the mid-day, the house stayed cool and comfortable as he breezes continuously flowed through the main living area! Each bedroom had AC and the beds were very comfortable. The outdoor bathroom/shower was different for us, but very appealing! It had dual sinks, a European style, tiled shower, and a big ceiling fan! We loved it!
Overall, my family thoroughly loved our stay!!! We highly recommend this home!! You are guaranteed to enjoy your stay here, no doubt! Jane is great! We will be back.........
Gorgeous Property in Coral Bay
Harbor Master was perfect. Just as described, this pretty cottage had all the amenities we needed for an amazing vacation. Beautiful views, fantastic kitchen, Jane and Brian were the perfect hosts - and even managed to save the day when our Jeep broke down! Family vacation was as wonderful as we had hoped and the property was exactly what we wanted. Thank you for everything!
Fantastic stay at Harbor Master!
We loved our time at Harbor Master! The house was beautiful and had everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. You can really tell that the Conrad family make guest comfort a top priority, with many thoughtful touches.
We especially loved the pool and patio with its sweeping, breathtaking views - even better than in the pictures! While it is in a great location to enjoy all St. John has to offer, be sure to allow time to relax and enjoy this amazing house!
We hope to be back before too long. This was our favorite VRBO rental experience of all time!
We loved harbor master
The Conrad property is so beautiful. There was no detail that went unnoticed. We loved how cute and quaint it was and the area couldn’t have been better. The outdoor shower/ bathroom was probably one of my favorite features. You really feel like you’re getting to appreciate the views and the foliage of the island just from the shower. Jane had everything we needed for our stay from snorkel gear, coolers, beach bags, etc. We will definitely be back to harbor master on our next visit to St. John. Thanks again for a great stay.
We loved our stay at Harbor Master. Everything was perfect. Jane is a great host. The location is great on the more quiet side of the island. The entire villa was perfectly decorated and spotless clean. We will visit again.
We are located a one minute drive up the hill from Crabby's Watersport's where you can rent snorkel gear, kayaks, and book boat trips. Coccoloba plaza is also at the base of the hill and houses a fully stocked grocery store, Dolphin Market. In the same plaza, you can enjoy seaside dining at Aqua Bistro Restaurant and Bar.
We are located 4 miles away from Salt Pond where you can do several activities such as hiking Ram Head, snorkeling the bay, or sunbathing on the white sandy beach. Lameshur is a short mile beyond Salt Pond where you can enjoy more secluded beaches, snorkeling, and ruins.
The East End offers some hidden gems such as Haul-Over bay and Hansen beach just over 4 miles from Harbor Master. On your way to East End make sure to stop by Skinny Legs for one of their famous burgers or Pickles for a sandwich Togo!
North Shore is lined with the soft white sandy beaches and historical ruins. The turn off for North Shore is 2.6 miles from the villa.
One of our favorite nature sight-seeing hike is Reef Bay Trail. The trail head is off Center Line, 15 minutes away, and leads down to a historical sugar plantation. Along the way, we suggest taking the short hike over to the Petroglyphs to see carvings from Native Americans pre-Columbus time.
More shopping, dining, and the "city life" of Cruz Bay is 8.7 miles away from the villa, or a 30-minute drive.
