About Lynn and Joe Smith
We have been life-long teachers who traveled the world working for the Department of Defense Education Activity. We've lived in so many countries to include Bermuda, Iceland, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Germany (Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden) and Abu Dhabi. We even lived on our 42 foot trawler for 7 years! We are now happily back in Maine as retirees to be closer to our families. We love meeting new people and invite you to see what Harpswell offers for yourself.
Lynn and Joe Smith purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Lynn and Joe Smith chose Harpswell
We bought our home because we wanted to live by the ocean in a town that had a vital boating and fishing community spirit. Harpswell is that town. This is a fishing community that encompasses active lobster, scallop, clam, mussel and algae fishing and farming. The many nooks and crannies along the towns 220 mile coastline provide a variety of small communities with their own special flavor. We love the view, the people and the incredible sense of community in Harpswell.
What makes this Cottage unique
If you love the ocean and seafood treats, you cannot beat this area. The seafood is literally taken right from the water to the table. Our lodging is a newly renovated to retain the rustic charm of the original, but updated with new granite counters, bathroom and kitchen fixtures and all new lights. The expansive porch provides cool breezes and lovely views of Harpswell Sound. There are countless hiking and walking trails nearby as part of the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust that highlight the pristine beauty of Harpswell.

What a charming, well equipped rental! We were so impressed with the thoughtfulness of every detail. Highly recommend. Joe and Lynn were superb hosts. We especially appreciated the boat tour. Will visit again and recommend to friends.
Joe and Lynn have created a very comfortable and private apartment with water views, and an easy walk to the shore line. The culinary amenities, and a tastefully decorated space and spacious deck were lovely. The site’s proximity to nature preserves and the boat excursion were ideal for exploring the area during our four night stay. Meeting Joe and Lynn helped make this our best vacation ever. We will definitely return!
Beautiful Spot in an Idyllic Coastal Community
A pair of more generous and considerate hosts, and a lovelier spot would be hard to find. Lynn and Joe's relaxed and "un-fussy" attention to detail provides guests with every convenience to enjoy a true vacation, tailored to one's interests: relaxation, information for exploration of Mid-coastal Maine, the pleasures of music, food, local culture, rest and activity - enjoyment of nature on land and water. All this, with the small conveniences and luxuries that make for a very special experience - a tasteful and spotless apartment stocked with provisions crafted by Maine artisans and businesses - everything one may need in kitchen,, bath and bedroom to be pampered and cared for.
In addition, Joe's 3-hour boat trip (scheduled at your convenience) highlights Harpswell's Island communities and harbours - and allows visitors to understand what Maine life and history have to offer.
We left our 10-day stay feeling rejuvenated and very appreciative for all we had learned and enjoyed.
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. We appreciate it. Joe and I are thrilled that you enjoyed the local sights and the accommodations. Christine and Frank, we hope to see you again. Kindest regards and thanks. Lynn and Joe
Cozy & Peaceful
Loved this rental. It is in a country setting with ocean views. It is thoughtfully appointed such as natural soaps for the laundry and many other touches, including spa robes and slippers! Even a picnic basket and cooler. All the bases were covered, we lacked nothing.
Decorating was lovely, and we were discovering new things we had missed the day before. It was a joy, really. Such a calming place, much needed after long days away.
Yum! Goodies and food necessities were left for us, including wine and cheese, eggs, pancake mix, maple syrup, butter, whole milk, coffee, sugar, spices and whoopie pies under glass -- many Maine-made products!
There's a lovely deck, and we invited family for grilling and visiting one evening. Oh, and the water tastes great. I'm always concerned about how the water will be, but no issues here.
A lovely view of the ocean. On the exterior wall in the bedroom, there is a small window level with the bed when laying down. One morning I laid in bed and watched the sun rise over the ocean through this window. Wonderful.
There is a loft with an additional bed. The stairs to the loft are steep, so if you're planning on having an older person in the loft, it may or may not be difficult for them to navigate.
Lynn and Joe are perfect hosts. There IF you need them.
Don't hesitate, BOOK!!
The place was very clean and comfortable, and within walking distance to the beach. We had a very enjoyable stay.
From start to finish our stay at Drifting In was flawless. Lynn and Joe are exceptional hosts. They are readily available for advice on excursions or restaurants, yet you have plenty of privacy. The apartment itself was perfect. We cooked there daily due to food allergies and had everything we needed to prepare our meals. To say the apartment was clean is an understatement. Lynn's attention to detail, from the wines and Wicked Woopie pies to the sheets and soaps, makes this a luxurious stay. Captain Joe provided an exceptional tour of the area by water, an experience that truly put this trip over the top.
