Barbara has been vacationing in Wells since childhood. She lived here through her high school years and would live here year round if she could. Through Barbara Jim discovered Wells and loves it, too. Four generations of the family have been traveling to Wells to enjoy the quaint town and lovely quiet lake for over 50 years. We invite you to come see for yourselves!
Jim and Barbara purchased this house in 2005
We purchased Longview in 2005 and gutted it to the studs.
Our aim was to make it into a home that we would want to stay in. All the comforts of home including a gas insert in the fireplace and a fully stocked kitchen. The screened porch is a big plus and a favorite of our guests. Lots of wild life going by on the lake year round.
The house has a much used fire pit in the yard for gathering under star filled skies.
In case of stormy weather the house is stocked w/ books, cds, dvds, board games, puzzles and even children's books and movies.
We own another home 'down the road a piece' so are nearby most of the time should you need anything during your stay.
Jim and barbaras home was exactly what my boyfriend and i were looking for for a quiet, relaxing getaway. The house is charming, cozy and warm. The pictures of the outside do not do it justice! It is situated right on a lake with chairs on the dock perfect for morning coffee and reflection. The canoe and kayak were an added plus! We spent our nights barbecuing and drinking wine by the firepit staring up at the stars. The house is 10 minutes to town and a small beach! Highly recommend to anyone seeking a quaint retreat.
This recently renovated house is perfect for a family vacation when you want to get away from it all. The house is comfortable and feels like a home, but not a musty older house at all. The living room is cozy, well lit, with books, board games, and DVD's to watch. Cable TV and Wifi means you aren't really disconnected from the outside world if you don't want to be.
The kitchen has everything you need, and the backyard was perfect for grilling and dining outdoors on the picnic table. The fire pit is also in the backyard, and provides a great way to relax and watch the sunset and ,moon rise over the lake.
The 2 kayaks and one canoe are great, plenty of different size life jackets in the house. The lake itself has a open water part and a wild part with islands and lily pads. You can kayak through narrow passages between islands, it feels like a nature safari that you would have paid for! We saw ducks, geese and a Great Blue Heron. Kayaking toward the open water, you can paddle under the bridge and hit the town beach for swimming and smooth sand.
The area is great for biking, hiking, and general exploring, but you could spend a week just boating and swimming from the house. It is located directly between two other houses, but during our week long stay in August, we didn't see neighbors from Monday through Friday at all.
The hosts Jim and Barbara are great, even though we never met them, they were very welcoming and wanted to be sure we were all comfortable and settled in.
Had a wonderful time. It was great to wake up and have breakfast and my cup of tea on the dock in the AM. We canoed and kayaked on the lake every day, found trails to hike most days. We used the fire pit several evenings to just kick back and relax. The quiet was a wonderful respite from our usual noisy world, to the point that the occasional passing car or truck on the bridge seemed so out of place. Took the opportunity to visit the Olympic sites at Lake Placid, a pretty good drive, and had great times and great food. The Adirondack Museum is about an hour a way and was very neat place. The cottage was fully equipped with the necessities, clean, comfortable and relaxing. We would heartily recommend this place to anyone else.
My husband and I have 2 little kids- they loved the place and we all had a great time. There was a nice vibe, and we appreciated the host's kindness. My husband and I were looking for a more private cabin - this place was close to the neighbors. We were able to see the road on the other side of the lake, as well... It was a beautiful area, with a lot to do, and the house itself was perfect: clean, cute, with beautiful flowers and a hummingbird feeder with hummingbirds constantly coming to feed. We are just introverts and wanted to be farther away from civilization.
This was a great place to rent! The owners, Barbara & Jim, were very welcoming and made sure their house was well cared for and provided great comfort & recreation. The lake was perfect for kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and watching wildlife. Nice quiet town but not too far from tourist attractions. I would love to rent this house again & would definitely recommend.
When we first arrived we found the cottage to be smaller than anticipated, but there was plenty of room for us and it was comfortable. The kitchen has everything you would need to prepare a meal which is nice so you don't have to cart dishes around with you. The back porch has plenty of seating and an excellent view of the view of the lake. The backyard has plenty of room to lounge around, and a nice fire pit to get a fire going. The kayaks are canoe were excellent to take up the river. We had a small fishing boat with us, but the river is too shallow to take it up. Jim and Barbara were wonderful and have thought of everything you would need to be comfortable on your stay. Whether you need a weekend away or a week, I think you will be as happy and comfortable here as we were.
The home is a short drive from Lake George, Gore Mountain, Lapland Lake Resort (cross country skiing), Blue Mountain Lake, and Saratoga. Enjoy hiking, water sports, golf, skiing and the arts nearby. There is a grocery store as well as several restaurants in Speculator, just 13 miles away. Oak Mt. is open again! Golfing in Lake Pleasant during the season. Swim from the yard or walk to the public beach. Enjoy campfires under the stars. Watch the otters, herons and other wild life who live in the lake. Feed the ducks w/ your little ones.
Other Activities: Hiking, public beach, mountain biking
Ski: Oak Mt. in Speculator is 12 miles away and provides a family atmosphere with downhill trails, rentals, tubing, bunny slope, cocktail lounge. Gore Mountain, located in North Creek which is about a 30 minute scenic drive.
For cross country skiers, Lapland Lake Resort is 10 minutes away.
